D gsliercication of et'ters Patenti4 Y Application led February 21, 1918. Serial 110.218,512. l
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT vH. SoHNUrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jeanette, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new vand useful Improvements in Lamp- Shades, of which the following is a speci- Y cation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.'
This invention relates to certain improvements in lamp shades and has relation more acter of an inverted type andit is an object of the invention to kprovide a lampi shade preferably formed of glass and which is provided with novel and improved means for Yprotecting .the shade proper against injury incident to the heat radiatingy from the lamp with which the shade-is employed,
and especially as resulting from the initial f.
ignition of the lamp. y
The invention consists inthe details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the severalV parts of my improved lamp shade whereby certain important advantages are attained and the def vice rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. yThe novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitelyr claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better. understood, I will now proceed to de scribe the same with reference tothe accompanying drawings, wherein: f
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken through a lamp shade constructed in 'accordance with an embodiment of my invention; and
Fig. 2 is a view partly in top'plan and partly in section of my improved shade ask herein disclosed, the 4line of section being taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; As disclosed inthe accompanying draw-V ings 1 denotes aV shade formed preferably of glass and Awhich is provided at itsv axial.. center with the opening 2. 3 denotes a me- .Y
tallic shield adapted to underlie the under face of theshade 1 at the upper portion thereof and said shield is maintained iny spaced relation relative to the shadel 1 through the medium of the outstanding protuberances 4 which are preferably pressed outwardly from. the shield. The protuberances 4` are arranged in circumferentially Vspaced relation around the shield 3 and in portion of the shade` 1 in order to maintaink ythe shade 1 andthe shield 3 in assembled` relation. It is also desired that the opposite surfaces of the shield 3 have applied thereto the. coatings 9 formed of suitable heat resisting and non-conducting material.
that with the use of the shield 3 the heat radiating from a lamp with which-the shade coacts and particularly when the lamp is first lighted, will not effect ak sudden expanvsion ofthe shade 1 proper which would otherwise have a tendency vto break the shade. t
PatentedAusmavFrom the4 foregoing description, it is" Vthought to be obvious that a lamp shade conf structed in accordance with my invention is? particularly well adapted kfor use by reason of the convenience and facility. with which it may be assembled and operated and 1t will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of somechange and modication without departing from the principles andV spiritl thereofand for this reason I do not `wish to be understood as limiting mysel-f tothe precise arrangement and formation ofthe several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim: f
In combination with a lamp shade having an opening at its axiallcenter, a shield underlyingv the upper portion of theshade,
theaxial'center of the Vshield being pro- 'videdy with an opening defined by an out# standing flange extending through the opening ofthe shade and affording a securing,
means, the portion of thev shield underlying the shade being provided with protuberances contactingfwith the' shade for holding said shield and shade in spaced relation', ysaid -protuberances being in staggered relation,
and means carried by the shield adjacent the 7 75 In practice Yit is thought to be self-evident flange and engaging a marginal portion of In testimony whereof I hereunto aix my the shade defining the axial opening in the signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
