To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, JOHN SIMON YOUNG and EDWARD W. YOUNG, both citizens of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have jointly invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to folding beds, and more particularly to that class of folding beds which are adapted to be installed at or adjacent to the door or other opening of a closet or other recess or chamber, whereby the bed may be extended in position for use exteriorly of such closet or recess, and may likewise be retracted or folded so that the bed in part or in whole is accommodated or chambered or housed within such recess or closet, a door, panel or other closure likewise frequently being employed to finally seal the recess or closet with the bed chambered therein- Such beds are variously called pivot beds, disappearing beds, and wall beds, as well as folding beds. In accordance withthe resent invention means are provided where y the bed struc ture may be conveniently and readily installed or removed from position in or adjacent to the entrance to the chamber, recess or closet, such means being also employed to support and sustain the several parts of the bed construction as well as the panel or closure for the recess or chamber; and further means are employed serving. to assist in the elevation of the bed from extended working position, to facilitate chambering the bed in the recess or closet. In preferred practice, the .bed is installed or directly supported within the closet opening, between the upright frame members confining such opening; and when the bed is folded or swung upwardly when not in use the panel or other closure fills such opening as a door and incloses the bed, practically in entirety, within the closet or recess. Such panel or closure may carry one or'more legs or supports for assisting in supporting the bed when the latter is extended in position for use.

The invention has for its object to provide an improved bed device of the general nature above set forth which will be superior in point of relative simplicity and inexpensiveness in construction and organization, taken in consideration with compactness in form, convenience and facility in installation and I Specification of Letters Patent. The members (Z comprise each a plate 12 adapted to be screwed or bolted flat against the respective door frame member 9, as at 13, such plate being provided with a stirrupshaped socket or hanger 13 in which rests a detachable stub shaft or bearing, 14 included within the member a. Each of said members ofurther comprises a main body 15 from which projects downwardly a bracket 16 with which is directly connected one end portion of the closure or panel 11, the panel thus being supported by said hanger 16 adjacent to the lower or inner end of the panel. A clamping plate 17 is provided for gripping the respective adjacent side rail a, beingbolted to the body 15 of the member 0, as at 18, such body and clamp plate 17 be ing jointly recessed to embrace and closely lit the respective side rail. From the body 15 rises a bracket 19 which fits beneath the adjacent edge of the wire mattress 5. Each of; the members 0 comprises a side frame 20 which rests at its forward end portion upon the wire mattress 5 at the respective side thereof, and is clamped to the respective bracket 19, as at 21, the rearward end portion ofeach such frame resting upon the adjacent end rail 6. Between the frames 20 extends the fixed head board 7 which is bolted thereto, as. at 22; and to brackets 23 at the tops of, said frames and the inner ends thereof is pivoted the folding head board 6, at at 24, such bracket 23 and head board 6 having co-engaging stops 23 and 24 which serve to hold the head board a in upright position permitting it to be folded downwardly upon theframes 20. The frames 20 are effectively supported by the brackets 19 bolted thereto as at 21, and may be adjusted lengthwise. ofthe bed as desired. Such adj ustment permitting, for one purpose, shifting of the stud 25 with which one end of the contractile springs 11 are connected with the bed, such stud being positioned adjacent to the vertical plane passing through the bearings 14; to the end that the action of such springs upon the bed may be varied in the. effect. thereof assisting in elevation thereof. The adjusting device it may consist of a threaded bolt 26 engaged with one end of the system of springs 11 and to which is applied an adjusting nut 27.

. The. operation, method of use and advantages of the improved bed device constituting the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and following statement:

The members 0 are first applied to the side rails of the bed, the plates being clamped over such side rails and to the bodies 15 of said members, the closure 11 is screwed or bolted to the bracket 16, and the members C are bolted down on to the brackets 19 with the edges of the wire mattress 5 clamped between the frames 20 and the brackets 19, and the parts so assembled may then be in stalled in position between the doorway vertical frame members 9 by placing the bearings or stub shaft 14 into the hangers 13 upon the plates 12 which have previously, been attached to the frame members 9 in opposed relation. The systems of springs 11 constituting the two means D are then hooked on to the studs 25 and the bolts 26. Previously, of course, the head boards e and f will have been installed in their positions upon the frames 20. Thereupon the bed with its several adjuncts will be in condition and position for service, and may be swung either into the lowered or extendedposition of parts indicated in Fig, 1 in full lines, or into the retracted or folded or upright position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. When in the former position, the bed is in condition for use, with the addition of course of the usual top mattress and bed ding. A leg 28, or legs, maybe applied to the outer end of the panel 11, at each side of the same, or one such leg may be so applied at the proper point, to support the free or outer end of the bed when it is in lowered or extended position for use. When the bed is retracted or folded upwardly such leg may serve as a hat or coat rack or the like; and the bedding is held to the bed by the frames 20 and the head board 7 and such other strips or holding devices as may be desired. The springs 11 are put under tension as the bed is lowered, such tension assisting in raising the bed. All strain is taken off from such springs when the bed is elevated, the bed being held in such elevated position by the weight of the top mattress and clothing, pillows and the like which bear upon the head board or boards preventing the bed from falling. It requires but a slight forward and downward pull to lower the bed against the tension of the springs. The bed remains lowered by gravity.

Having thus disclosed our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent: 1. A bed frame provided with side rails and a wire mattress above the same, and means applied to the side rails whereby the bed frame may be pivotally supported at its sides; said means being provided with projecting portions with which a panel or the like may be connected, together with said panel'so applied; further means connected with said first named means adjacent to the spring mattress, and a spring or the like connected with said latter means and likewise with a fixed support; said last named means consisting of side frames extending above the wire mattress and carrying a head board and being clamped to said first named means with the edges of the wire mattress between the same.

4. In a bed device of the character dis closed, members attachable to the sides of the bed frame, and supports receiving the same in pivotal relation whereby the bed may be swung upon such members; said first named members being provided with further members attachable thereto and adapted to clamp between said first named members and said last named members a wire mattress attached to the bed frame.

5. In a bed device of the character disclosed, members attachable to the sides of the frame, and other members attachable to supports and adapted to receive said first named members in pivotal relation whereby a bed may be swung upon such members;

said first named members being provided with further members adapted to clamp between said first named members and said last named members a bedbody element.
