SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 463,221, dated November 17, 1891.

objects of my improvements is to better the construction and means for connecting such links to the standard and bed-frame.
Another of the objects is to improve the manner of connecting the counterbalancingweight.
These objects I have'attained by the bedstead embodying the construction of the de tails illustrated in she accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of a bedstead closed, a portion of the side board of the stand ard being broken away to show interior parts. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation, some of the parts being shown as broken away. Fig. 3 is a fragment of a horizontal section of the bed open, taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 4.. Fig. 4 is a fragmentof asectional sideelevationofthebed open, taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the head end of the bed-frame, with the hinged pillow-board attached thereto. Fig. 6 is a fragment of a cross-section on the line 6 6 of Fig. 5. Fig. '7 is a detail representing a side and a rear view ofa piece of the counter-balance. Figs. 8, 9, 10, and 11 are details showing, first, a side view of one of the connecting-links and the plate for connecting it to the base of the standard, then an end view of said plate, then a top edge view of the same connected to a sectional fragment of said base, and, lastly, an edge view of said link. Figs. 12 and 13 are details showing, first, aside view of a plate for connecting the pivotpin to the side rail of the bed-frame, and then an edge view of the same connected to asectional fragment of said side rail. In the drawings, A designates the standard and A the bed-frame, which are of ordinary construction. The standard and bed-frame are connected together by means of crosslinks a and a. Said links a have an open socket a at each end-one at the bottom to rest on a supporting-pin b, secured to the base of the standard, and one at the top for the pivot-pin b of the bed-frame. In order to facilitate the connection of said pin 1) to the base of the standard, I provide a plate B,having screw-holes and pin b whereby the same can be readily secured to said base by means of ordinary screws in such manner as to support the bed-frame on the links a, on each side resting on said pins I). Said plate .13 has a flange B, whereby it is held away from the base-board, so as to make room for the lower end of the link a to set down between said plate and board, and be thus prevented from slipping off said pins I). Said links a are provided with a curve a near their lower ends The offset below the curve a comes against the side of the standard, and the offset in the opposite direction, above the curve a comes against the outside of the side rail in such manner as to brace said links laterally and prevent them from rubbing the wood at the intermediate points; and said links a are provided with a curve a near their upper ends, the offsets above said curves resting against the side of the bed-frame, so as to hold the body of said links a sufficiently away from the bed-frame for the links a to play bet-ween and in parallel relation therewith. A washer a is applied between the other end of said links and the standard to hold said parts separated and prevent their rubbing at other points. Said links a a are thus braced laterally and caused to work smoothly within a narrow space without rub bing one another or the standard or bed-frame.

That part of the said pivot-pin back of the bearing-point is made as large as said head through the thickness of the side rail, so that by boring a hole through the side rail of the requisite size to admit said head said plate can be attached to the inside of the rail with the head and bearing-point projecting on the outside, and the back part of said pin completely filling said hole.
A pillow-board O is hinged to the head cross-piece of the bed-frame and provided at each end with rollers c, which are adapted to roll up and down on strips 0", attached to the back of standard. In order to facilitate the attachment of said rollers to the parts to which they are to be fixed, I provide a plate D, having screw-holes and a hollow tapering pin d, which projects outward and forms a bearing for said roller. When the roller is placed upon such bearing-pin, a cap d is placed over the end of the same and. held by ascrew d which passes through the hollow of said pin and fastens in the wood, so as to hold said cap in place and thereby prevent the roller from slipping off said pin.
The box E for holding the counterbalancing-weight is placed on the bottom of the bed-frame and inside of the head cross-piece of the same inorder to prevent striking the floor when the bed is made as low as it is desirable to make it. The head end of the tick may thus be extended over the weight-box,
"so as to give full length to the bed without interfering with placing the bed as near the floor as is desirable when open. This has long been a desideratum in folding bedsteads operated by the aid of weights.
In order to facilitate the putting in and taking out of the weights, I have changed the form of the weight-box and weights, the box being provided with a strip 6 at the top and a strip a at the rear edge of the bottom. A piece is cut out of these strips near the center, so as to leave an opening E. The weights F are made in short blocks instead of long bars, as heretofore, and provided with longitudinal grooves f and f, so that they may be put in at the opening E and moved along toward either side with the strips 6 e in the grooves ff, the said strips operating to hold said block from falling out of the box.
Having thus described my improvements, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The standard and bed-frame, in combination with links a, provided with a curve a near one end and a lesser curve a near the other end, said curves forming offsets from the body of the link in opposite directions, and the links a, provided with acurve a a pair of said links CL and a being arranged across each other and pivoted to the standard and bed-frame, with their offsets formingbearings thereon, adapted to prevent lateral play and rubbing of the links against one another or the standard and bed-frame at the intermediate points, as specified. 2. A set of irons for connecting the standard and bed-frameof a folding bed, consisting of two links a, provided with open sockets at each end and having a curve a at one end and a lesser curve a at the other end, said curves forming offsets on opposite sides of the body of the link at each end, two links a, having a hole in each end, and a curve a, forming an offset at one end of said links, in combination with two plates B, with screwholes, pin 1), and flange B, and two plates B provided with screw-holes and pin 1), having a head b substantially as specified.
