UNITED STATES SOLOMON ABRAMS, OF HAYWARDS, CALIFORNIA.
COMBINATION FOLDING BED AND BUFFET.
Application filed June 11,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SOLOMON ABnAMs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Haywards, in the county of V Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Folding Beds and Bufiets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in folding beds, where the bed is formed in three sections, hinged to one another in such a manner as to allow them to be brought at one time horizontally in. a row forming an open bed, and at another time to become folded up and to be placed in a case having the form of a buffet, where they may be stored away and out of view.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of this nature which may be used as a bed in a dining room of a dwelling during the night and may be hid away in the day time into the interior of a bufiet, which is a pro-per piece of furniture for a dining room, thus leaving no suggestion of the presence of a bed in the room.
The accompanying drawings forming part of this specification illustrate the construction, arrangements of parts, and the manner of operation of my invention.
Fig. 1 of the drawings is a sectional elevation of my invent-ion, showing the position of parts, when the bed is folded up, resting in the inside of the buffet.
Fig. 2-is a sectional elevation of the same showing the parts in position when the bed is withdrawn from the buffet and placed upon the floor ready for use.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the buffet and the bed when the latter is open.
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of my invention showing the device when the bed is folded up and hid in the interior of the buffet. 1
Fig. is a detail of the middle section of the bed drawn in perspective.
Fig. 6 is a detail of the upper section of the bed drawn in perspective.
Fig. 7 is a detail ofthe head board frame drawn in perspective. 7
Fig. 8 is a detail of the lower section of the bed drawn in perspective and Fig. 9 is a sectional elevation of the combined folding bed and buffet showing the action of the head board frame in lifting the upper section of the bed when' the middle section is being moved towards the buffet, also show- 1923. Serial No. 644,605.
ing the mechanism actuating the supporting legs of the lower section when the latter is being swung upwards.
The folding bed comprises the middle section 1, provided with the rollers 2 and adapt-- ed to travel forwards and backwards up on the floor of the room.
At one side of the middle section is placed the upper section 8, which is pivoted to it at 4 and is provided at the other end with a hinge 5 connecting it to the head board frame 6 carrying the shaft 7 fitted in the bearings 8 secured to the side walls 9 of the buffet 10.
At the other end of the middle section 1 is placed the lower section 11, pivoted to it at one end at 12 and provided at the other end with the legs 13 which are pivoted at 14: and serve to support it from the floor.
When the bed is. withdrawn from the inclosing case and brought into the room, it has the appearance shown in Fig. 2, the middle sect-ion 1 resting with the rollers 2 upon the floor, the upper sections 3 being in a horizontal position resting at one end at 4 upon the middle section and at the other end 5 bein suspended from the stationary bearings 8 by means of the shaft 7 which is rigidly secured to the head board 6.
The middle section 1 shown in detail in Fig. 5 is formed of the two upper angle bars 15 secured to the top of two cross frames 16 made of channel iron and formed in the shape of the letter U. e
The horizontal flanges of the angle iron bars 15 are provided with the holes 17 to receive the cross strands of the wire mattress 18, while the vertical flanges are formed at one end with the pivoting hinges 4- to receive the ends of the upper section 3 and at the other end with the pivoting hinges 12 to receive the ends of the lower section Below theupper angle irons 10, secured to the cross frames 16 are placed the middle angle irons 19 and the lower angle irons 20.
Cross bars 21, secured to the horizontal flanges of the middle angle irons l9 serve to support the mattress springs- 22furnished on the middle section of the bed only.
The lower angle irons are furnished with the rollers 2 supporting the middle section from the floor and aiding in the movement of the same into and out of the buffet. when closing and opening the bed-- A drawer 23 fitted to slide between the lower angles may be used for storing away the linen for the bed.
The upper section 3- of the bed is made of angle iron formed in the shape of the let-- ter U, as shown in Fig. 6.
The vertical flange of it is formed with the hinges 4 whereby it is pivoted to the middle section at one side and with the hinges 5 connecting with the head board 6.
A number of rods 24: carrying the sliding arms 25 for maintaining the bedding are secured to the cross bar 26 of the upper section in the usual manner and a number of holes 27 are provided to receive the tension springs 28 0f the wire mattress. and holes 29 are drilled in the side bars 30 to receive the cross strands of the mattress.
The head board frame shown in detail in Fig. 7 consists of the twoarms 6 rigidly secured to the shaft 7 and braced together by the rods 32, which serve for a head board of the bed.
The buffet inclosing the bed when folded and. not in use is shown in a front elevation in Fig. 4 and in cross section in Figures 1, 2 and 9.
The lower portion forms a box-like receptacle provided in front with the doors 33 which are opened and swung back when the bed is being opened and are closed, hiding the bed within, when the latter is not used.
The top portion may be made in any form. Rollers may be provided on the case of the buffet in order to make it portable or the buffet may be built into the wall of the build- 111 The lower section of the; bed, shown in detailin. Fig. 8, is made, of angle iron and consists of the two bars 11 joined together by the cross bar 35 and the foot rail 36.
The bars 11 are provided at one end with the hinges 12 connecting with the middle section 1 and at the other end with the hinges 14 whereby the swinging legs become attached.
Braces 38 are pivoted at one end at at to the extensioi'i 31 of the middle angle 19 and all} the other end at 37 to the legs 13 for the purpose of keeping the latter constantly in a vertical direction during the time the lower section of the bed is swinging up or down from a horizontal position shown in Fig. 2 to a vertical position shown in Fig. 1 as illustrated in Fig. 9.
The lower section of the bed is furnished with rods 24 and the arms 25 fer maintain ing the bedding and with the tension springs 28 and the holes 29 for the mattress.
Ordinarily the bed remains during the day time within the inclosing case 1 being entirely hidden by the doors 33, the lower section 11, the middle section 1, the upper section 3 and the headboard frame 6 being folded up in the shape of a rectangle.
Vhen the bed is to be used in the night time the doors 83 are opened and swung back and the middle section is withdrawn from the case and carried into the room causing the upper. section 3 and the head board frame 6 to be lowered as shown in Fig. 9, when said middle section has traveled only a part of the way, and as shown in Fig. 2 when it has traveled to the end of its motion, andthe lower section has been swung down, until the legs 13 rest upon the floor, and the bed is ready for use.
When the bed is to be closed the lower section 11 is raised toa vertical position and the middle section 1 is moved into the inclosing case- 10, causing the upper section 3 and the head board 6 to take the positions shown in Fig. 1, when the doors 33 may be closed concealing the bed within.
Having thus described my invention, what I' claimas. new and desire to secure by Letters Patent; is:
