IMPROVEMENT IN EGG-CARRIERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,379, dated May 28, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SETH H. Smrrnof North Adams, in the county of Hillsdale and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Egg-Carriers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawin g and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an eggcarrier, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable. others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my egg carrier, Fig. 2 is a similar View of the same with the top removed 5 and Figs. 3 and 4 are views of the pockets.

The frame of my egg-carrier is made in horizontal sections, frames or racks, atop and a bottom section, A A, and one or more intermediate sections, B. The top and bottom sec tions A A are made in the shape of a box, and of any desired dimensions, while the intermediate sections are merely open frames, of precisely the same size and shape as the top and bottom sections. Across the edges of the top and bottom sections A A, as well as 011 both sides of each intermediate section, two wires, to a, are woven in the following manner: The wires to a are placed across the frame about one-fourth of an inch apart then a space sufficient to admit of an egg; then the two Wires again, and so on, until the frame is all occupied. In like manner two other wires are placed or woven across the other way, with one wire over and the other under the others, alternately. O 0 represent metal pieces or straps, bent substantially in the shape shown in the drawing, and sprung across the wires where said wires cross each other, thus formin g pockets in which the eggs are to rest. The bottom section of my egg-carrier is first filled with an egg in each pocket. Then one of the intermediate sections B is placed on top of the same, the eggs in the bottom section projecting up into the lower pockets of the intermediate section. The upper pockets of this section are then filled, and so on, until at last the top section is put on, closing the whole. The sections areheldinplacebymeans of L-shaped plates D D, attached to the corners of all the sections except the top one, and extending up to inclose the lower ends of the corners on the section immediately above. the top section are bound with metal plates, asshown. Across each of the top and bottom sections AA is ametal bar, E, the ends of which extend on opposite sides, and are turned outward, forming ears b I), through the corresponding ones of which are passed screws. Gr, thus coupling or uniting all the sections firmly together. The pockets made of metal, as above described, keep the eggs cool, and being open admit of large eggs, and still hold small eggs in the same pockets.

In case the rack should get a hard jar the pockets spring; and if any eggs become broken the racks can be scalded out and kept clean. The pockets can also readily be repaired in case of accident. The eggs may be taken out from the top or bottom, as may be desired.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of the cross-wiresa a and metal pieces or straps O (l, constructed as shown and described to form spring-pockets for an egg-carrier, substantially as herein set forth.

2. The angular plates D D, attached to the corners of each section of a sectional egg-carrier, and extending up to hold the section above, substantially as herein set forth.

3. The combination of the top and bottom sections A A, one or more intermediate sections, B, pockets formed of the wires or a, and straps C G, angular plates D D, and couplings E G, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
