Be it known that I, EARL HANCHETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at J amestown, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have nvented certain new and useful Improvements in Baskets, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in baskets and particularly to a basket having its walls formed flat and rigid, so that the contents of the same will not be liable to be crushed.

An important object of this invention is to provide a basket, which is strong, durable and easy to manufacture.

In the construction of my basket I provide metallic rods having oppositely faced sockets for-med therein for receiving 'the horizontal strips, whereby these strips are securely held in place in the same plane and the wall of the basket formed flat.

In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, Figure 1 is a side view of the basket, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, and, Fig. '3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

In the drawings wherein is illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, my basket is shown as being` formed of upper and lower preferably

rectangular frames

1 and 2, which are ali'ke. These frames are spaced, as shown, and connected at their corners by Vertical posts 3, which may preferably be formed of metal.

The numeral 4 designates strips, which form the bottom of the basket and are attached to the lower frame 2. The side and end walls of the basket are alike, so a detailed description of one will suffice for all.

Each wall of the basket is preferably formed of horizontal splints or strips 5, having their en'ds connected with the posts 3. At proper spaced intervals are disposed metal rods or strips 6, having their upper:v and lower end portions extending respectively through the upper frame 1 and lower frame 2. Each of these metal rods is screwthreaded at its upper and lower ends for the reception of ferrule-nuts 7. Each of the metal rods 6 is bent throughout its length for forming oppositely faced

8 and 9, occurring alternately. These

8 and 9 are disposed in the same plane and snugly receive the splints or strips 5. These splints are thus held in the same plane and hence the wall of the basket is flat. Attention is called to the fact that the rods G are relatively rigid, whereby the wall of the basket will not crush. The lower end of each rod 6 also eXtends through the strips 4, as shown. I Attention is called to the fact that the rods G are alternately reversed, that is to say the socket 8 of one rod is disposed upon one side of the splint or strip 5 and the socket 8 of the alternate'rod is disposed upon the opposite side of the splint or strip 5. The same' thing is true of the sockets 9 of one rod and the corresponding` socket of the alternate rod.

The basket is preferably rovided with handles 11 secured to the en strips of the upper frame 1 and any suitable form of cover or lid (not shown) may be provided for the basket if desired.

Attention is called to the fact that the load placed upon the bottom strips 4 will be supported by the rods 6. The structure of the basket may be tightened up by properl manipulation of the ferrule-nuts 7, tending to draw the upper and

I wish it understood that the form of my invcntionherewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that certain changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
