Specification of Letters Patent.

Application led July 13, 1917. Serial No. 180,21*?.`
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX TEUBER, a subject of the Emperor' of Germany, residing at New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Luggage-Carriers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in luggagecarriers which are adapted to facilitate the carrying of heavy suit cases and other articles and has for its object to produce such a deviee'whieh will be inexpensive to manufacture, sightly in appearance and effective for its intended purpose.
Further objects of the invention are to provide such a device which may be used by persons of different sizes and build without the necessity for adjusting the same, in which the weight of the article carried will be properly distributed upon the shoulder and back of a person and which may be used on either side of a person.
ln the accompanying drawings which form part of this application,
Figure 1 is a perspective representation of the carrier in adjustment upon a person.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the carrier.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the catch member, and
Fig. 4l is a vertical sectional view on the line 1 1 of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawings for a detailed description of the invention, 1 is a side strap portion of the carrier which is adapted to be placed, when the article is in adjustment, at the side of a person and 2 is an extension ofthe side strap portion 1 forming a looped shoulder strap that is adapted to it upon the-shoulder of a person, as shown in Fig. 1.
In order that all of the weight of the article carried may not be borne upon the shoulder, a back strap 3 is provided so that part of the weight of the article carried may be borne by theiack. The back strap 3 is integral with the shoulder strap 1. A connecting strap 4 is provided and joins the shoulder strap 2 and back strap 3. The connecting strap 4: is provided with reinforcing means 5, which may be. a flat strip of any rigid material such as whalebone or metal. A catch member 6 is secured to the bach strap 3 and is adapted to enga e with the garment of the wearer over which the device is placed. llt seen to consist of a frame member 7 in which a slide 8 is adapted to slide. A pin 9 is secured to the slide. 1When adjusting the catch member, the slide 8 is pulled outwardly, a portion of the garment of the wearer moved upwardly into the opening 10 in the frame 7 and slide 8 into the path of the pin 9 which engages the garment when the slide 8 is moved to engaging position. The object of the catch member 6 is to prevent the device from` moving out of proper adjustment more particularly when no article is being carried.
At the end of the side strap 1 reinforcing means 11 is secured. A substantially U- shaped hook member 12 is supported at this point. 1t is intended to have the legs 13 of this hook member 12 extend upwardly one on each side of the side strap 1. llhe hook member 12 is adapted to be moved horizontally so that the leg adjacent the inside of the side strap 1 may be moved against the same when the device is reversed for use on either side of a person. Such movement from side to side is indicated in full and dotted line positions in Fig. L1. llo the outside leg 13 of the lll-shaped member the luggage is secured. This may be conveniently done by placing a strap 14- around the handle of a suitcase 15 or around other luggage and a loop therein over a leg 13 of hook member 12.
The device is adapted to be used on either shoulder. rl[`he advantage of this will be readily apparent. 'lFo adjust the device from the right to left, as desired, it is merely necessary to turn the same and to press the llil-shaped hook member so that the Aleg on the inside will rest against the inside of the side j strap 1 which presents the other leg for engagement with the article to be carried.
The device of this invention is adapted to be worn under a coat and when an overcoat is ivoijn it may be placed in adjustment over the inner coat, the side strap 1 protruding through the overcoat pocket on either side.
llt will be apparent that the device of this invention may be made of canvas, leather, or any other material of suitable strength for its intended purpose.
l claim:
1. A baggage carrier comprising a iiexible shoulder strap with side portions adapted to entend downward en opposite sides of the arm, and having means at :its lower and for attaching the articlefto .be carried, a bach strap, the ends of Which connectivith .the
, shoulder strap, a fastening device secured ,to
the back strap and adapted to engage With the clothing at the back of the neck of vthe user to maintain the device in position, and e rig-id .reieioreg bend. connecting the back strap and the shoulder strap and serving to maintain the back strap lin position.
2. In a luggage carrier, ,in combination, a
.strap shoulder member having its ends sepia; o f emparent may :be obtained for shoulder member adapted to be secured to an article to be carried.
3. In a luggage carrier, in combination, a strap shoulder member forming a loop with its lower ends united and extended to form a side strap member, a strap back member secured to the rear edge of the shoulder member at both ends, a reinforced connecting member connecting 'the strap shoulder and the strap back members, means secured to the back strap member adapted to .engage the clot-hing of a person to maintain the carrier in desired adjustment, and la substantially U-shap'ed member, adj-ustably secured to lthe end of the side strap member adapted to have the article to -be carried attached thereto.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature.
