Loosely mounted on the shaft 6 are a pluralit oflweb supporting rolls 8 each provider with a facing 9 preferablyv of rubber. YAdjacont each of the rolls 8 a ratchet 10 is vsecured to the shaft 6 in any suitable Vman- -ner as for example vby screws 11.
The ratchets 10 are therefore driven with the shaft. i Each of the web supporting rolls 8 ,is provided-with a pluraltyof pawls 12 pivkpo/ted atl13 thereon and each Vhaving an arm 1A supporting `aspring 15. The springs 15 `arejdisposed between the pawls v12 and the peripheries Tof the web supporting rolls 8, and "hold the pawls in vengagement with ythe ratchets 10. Thus wheny the shaft 6 and vFatchets 10 are driven in thel direction indicated by the arrowfin Fig. 4 the web supporting rolls 8 are driven 'in the same direction. The web supporting rolls are however, permitted to advance `in the same direction independently of and at an angular speed greater than the angular .speed of Vthe shaft 6. v
A shaft 16 is journaled in suitable bearings in rbrackets 17 secured to the frame 5. Ag-pulley 17 `is secured to the shaft 6 and is connected to a pulley 18 on the shaft 16 by across belt 19. 'Other suitable driving means may of course be substituted for the belt to drivethe shaft `16 in the opposite direction to the direction of rotation of the shaft ,6 and at a 4'higher angular speed. A plurality of bifuroated yarms 2O are loosely mounted on the shaft 16. Each arm 20 is .provided with a weft straightening roller 21 Sprockets 23 Ysecured to each of the weft straightening rolls 21 are fconnected by chains 24 to rsprockets l'25 secured to `the shaft 16. Thus the weft 'straightening rollers 21 are driven vat the angular speed of the shaft 16 and are rotated in a direction opposite to the direction of rotation of the supporting rolls 8. The web supporting yrolls 8 and weft straightenrollers 21 engage `opposite sides ofthe web 26 and draw therweb jin the same direc* tion as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2.

Each of the arms 20 is provided with a tail 27 on which a counter weight 28 is sup- ;ported and lheld by arse't screw 29 so that the counter weights may vbe vadjusted to exactlyfbalanc'e the weight ofthe arms 2O and weft straightening rollers 21, rod 29 see cured in the bracket 17 carries a plurality of springs 20 which resilientlyzlimit movement of the arms 20 in one direction 'by yengagement of the tails 27 therewith.
5 The mode of operation ,of..my. invention will be readily understood from the following brief description thereof.` rIhe web 2 6 passes over the web supporting rolls 8 as indicatedv in Fig.` 2.. The operative examines 10 itheY web from time 'to time and upon finding that a portion of the web is flagging so that the weft threads are not straight swings the corresponding arm or arms 2() to carry the -weft straightening roller or rollers v21 into engagement with the web.' Inasmuch as the peripheral speed of the weft straightening rollers- 21 is considerably higher than the normal speed of the web 26 as it passes over the web supporting rolls 8 that portion of the web with which the weft straightening roller or rollers 21 engages is tensioned and 'drawn forwardly at a higher rate of speed until the weft is again straight. The operative then swings the arm or arms 2O to disengage the'weft straightening roller or rollers 21 from the web. While a weft straightening roller 2l is in engagement with the web,
'the cooperating web supporting roll 8 is rotated at substantially the peripheral speed 30 of the weft straightening roller,'th`eY pawls 12 `riding over the teeth of the ratchet 10.
From the foregoing description it will be readily understood that I have perfected a simple and effective means for straightening the weft threads of textile fabrics. The apparatus may be rapidly thrown into and out ofoperation at the will of theoperative and consequently a single operative may control the Winding of a plurality'of webs. Thus 'a considerable economy is eifected, and the winding is made more uniform than has been possible by following the practice vof the prior art. f
