BENJAMIN FRANKLIN WOOD, 0F LENZBURG, LOUISIANA.
DEVICE FOR CONTROLLING SUPPLY OF WATER TO BOILERS.
Application filed. March 8, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN WVooD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lenzburg, in the parish of Red River and State of Louisiana, have invented an Improvement in Devices for Controlling Supply of. l Vater to Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in devices for controlling the supply of water to boilers, wherein the supply is directly controlled by the amount in the boiler.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a side view of a portion of a boiler provided with the improved controlling means.
Fig. 2 is a partial longitudinal section of the regulating tank.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a section on the line H of Fig. 1.
The present embodiment of the invention is shown in connection with a boiler 1, having connected with one end thereof two valve casings 3 and 4, the said casings communicating with the boiler above and below the normal water level. Water is supplied to the boiler by means of a pipe 5 having interposed in the length thereof a valve casing 6, and the valve has connected therewith. a lever 7 for operating the said valve.
A tank 8 of a size to contain 100 lbs. of water is connected to one end of the lever by means of a link 9. This link is pivoted at its upper end between a pair of lugs 11 on the tank. The lower end of the link is provided with a series of openings, any one of which may be used to receive a bolt 12 which connects the link with one end of the lever.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 16, 1918.
Serial No. 153,486.
A slide 18 is secured to the tank, and this slide moves in guides 10 secured to the side of the boiler. The tank is connected at one end to'the valve casings 3 and 4: by means of pipes 13 and 14:, each of the said pipes 13 and 14 having a flexible hose adjacent to the tank, so that the tank may move with respect to the valve casings.
A drain valve 16 is connected with that end of the tank remote from the valve casings, and a suitable counterpoise is connected with the other end of the lever 7 the said counterpoise being in the present instance a box 17 of sand. The tank 8 is supported by a bracket 18 connected with the boiler.
In operation, when the water becomes low in the boiler, it will become low in the tank, and the tank will be overbalanced by the counterpoise 17 and will be raised, and water will be admitted to the boiler. As the water increases in depth, it will also increase in depth in the tank, and the tank will even-v tually overbalance the counterpoise and close the valve 6. Thus the supply of water to the boiler will be automatically regulated.
I claim:
In combination with a boiler and the valve for controlling the flow of water thereto, a tank having communication with the boiler above and below the water level of the same, a slide rigidly secured to and depending from the tank, guides on the boiler for the slide to permit the slide to move vertically, a lever connected intermediate its ends to the valve for operating the same, an adjustable connection between one end of the lever and the tank for moving the said lever when the tank moves vertically, and a counterpoise connected with the other end.
