To all whom 1'25 may concern.-
Be it known that I, DERWIN E. BUTLER, of Chesterfield, (Oak Shade 1?. O.,) in the county of Fulton and the State of Ohio, have invented 5 a new and Improved Feed-WVater Regulator,
of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved feed-water regulator,which is simple in construction and autoinaticin operation.
The invention consists of various parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improvement. Fig. 2 is an inverted sectional plan view of the same on the line it w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section of the same on the line 3 y of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is asectional end view on the line 2 zof Fig. 2. Fig.- 5 is a sectional plan view of the tank-valve on the line to w of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is asimilar view of the same on the' line a a of Fig. 3.
The tank A, of suitable size and construction, is provided on the inside with the bent tube B, secured to the bottom ofthe tank and extending to the outside of the same. The part B of the pipe B connects with the watersupply, and the other part, B, is provided with a partition, B. The part below the par tition B is provided with a pipe, C, leading to the boiler D, placed below the tank A. The pipe C is provided on the outside of the boiler D with avalve, C, and to the lower end of the pipe C is pivoted a skimmer,
On the part B of the pipe B turns a valve, E, provided in its top with the ports E, which connect with corresponding ports, B, in the part B above the partition B and the valve E is also provided with ports E", which correspond with the ports B in the part B below the partition B". Vthen the interior of the pipe B is connectedwith theinside of the tank by means of the ports E and B*, the'po'rts E 50 and B are disconnected, and vice versa.

A link, F, connects the valve E withthe piston G, operating in the cylinder H, which opens into the tank A. The-piston G is provided with the piston-rod I, which extends to the outside of the cylinder and is connected with the coil-spring J. On the piston-rod I is pivoted an arm, K, having the notches K and K", which engage alternately with the shaft M, passing transversely through the cylinder H, and having the lug L on the inside, and the outside of the shaft M is provided with a crank-arm, N, which is connected by the link 0 with the crank-arm P, secured to the shaft Q. passinginto the tank A, and carrying on the inside of said tank an arm,R, provided on its end with a float, S.
A rod T, having its bearing on the pistonrod I, and moving with the same, is provided with a pin, T, operating on the arm K, and with a handle, T, by which the rod T can be turned. The spring U, secured to the top of the piston-rod I, acts on the arm K.
The operation is as follows: As shown in Fig. 1, the boiler D is filled t0 the high-water mark with water,and the tank Ais partly filled 7 5 with water. The valve E is in such a position that it connects the interior of the tank A with the pipe 0 and the boiler while the watersupply is shut off. As soon as the water in the boiler diminishes so that the water-level is below the lower end of the pipe C, which permits the steam in the boiler to pass up through the pipe C into the tank A by means of the ports B and E the said steam exerts its pressure on the water in the tank A, and causes the water to flow down into the boiler by the ports through which the steam passed up into the tank. As soon asthe water in the boiler covers the lower end of tnvpipe C the flow of the water from the tank A cases. 0 WVhen the operator finds that the tank A is empty, he turns the rod T, by means of the handle T so that the pin T raises the arm K, which is thus disengaged from the shaft M by its notch K". As soon as the level of the water 9 5 in the boiler is below the lower end of the pipe 0 the steam passes into the tank A and the pressure of the steam forces the piston G to move outward, and when in its extreme outward position the operator turns the handle 10o T back to its former position, which causes the arm K to swing downward, and the notch K falls over the shaft M, which locks the piston-rod I and the piston G in its outer position. This outward motion of the piston G turns the valve E so that the ports B and E are closed and the ports 13 and E are placed in communication with each other, which connects the supply of water with the interior of the tank A. As the steam remaining in the tank A condenses it forms a vacuum in the same, which causessuetion in the supply-pipe D, and the water enters the tank A through the ports B and E. As the water rises in the tank A it raises the float S, and when the same reaches its uppermost position the lug L on the shalt M, which is turned by the rising of the float S, causes the arm K to swing upward, and thereby disengages-the shaft M from the notch K. The spring J, which was eonr pressed by the outward motion of the piston G, now exerts its pressure and forces the piston G, the piston-rod l, and the rod T inward to their former position, (shown in Fig.1,)where' by the valve E is turned so as to shut off the water-supply by closing the ports 13 and E, and establishes connnunication with the boiler by opening the ports 3 and E The abovedescribed operation of feeding the boiler from the tank A again takes place. The spring U holds the arm K in a locked position. The
connection between the tank A and the boiler may also be shut off by the valve 0, if desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a feed-water regulator, the combination of the boiler D and the tank A with the pipes B and O, the valve E, operating on the pipe 13, the piston G, operating the valve E, and the float S, unlocking the piston G, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a feed-water regulator, the combinationof the boiler D and the tank A with the pipes 13 and O, the valve E, operating on the pipe 13, the piston G, operating the valve E, thepistoirrod I, the spring J, and the float S, unlocking the piston G, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a feed-water regulator, the combination of the boiler D and the tank A with the pipes 13 and C,- the valve E, alternately connecting the water-supply and the boiler with the tank A, the piston G, connected by thelink F with the valve E, the piston-rod I, and the spring J, substantially as shown and described.
