FEED-WATER REGULATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 666,897, dated January 29, 1901.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS FITZGERALD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Johnstonburg, in the county of Elk and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Feed- Water Regulators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in feed-water regulators, and is particularly adapted for use for regulating the feed of water to boilers and for other purposes; and it consists of a float arranged in a Water-chamber and connected to a pair of valves for controlling the supply of water and feed located in a steam-space, the valves being controlled by the rising and falling of the water and suitable connections.
The invention further aims to construct a feed-water regulator which shall be extremely simple in construction, strong, durable, efficient in its use, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture and set up.
The invention finally consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, formingapart of this specification,and wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a boiler, partly broken away, showing my improved feed-water regulator connected thereto. Fig. 2 is a side view of the water-chamber and-its pipe connections, partly broken away, also showing in dotted lines the regulating-float and its connections. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the regulating-float and its connections.
In the drawings, 1 denotes the boiler, 2 a water-chamber connected thereto, and 3 a water-column connected to the water-chamber 3. Within the water-chamber 2 is the regulating-float 4:, having at one end a stem 5. This float also carries an upwardly-extending standard 7, which projects through a slot 9, formed in a lever 10, arranged above the float. This lever is supported at its slotted end by a pin 8, extending transversely through the standard 7. The Water-chamber 2 is connected at its lower end to the boiler by means of the water-line 12, which is also used as a blow-01f, and is provided with a stop-cock 13. The upper part of the water-chamber is in communication with the boiler by means of the steam-line 14 and connections 15.
The reference-numeral 16 indicates a water-feed line which is connected at one end to the pump (not shown) and in communication with the boiler by means of the connections 17.
The reference-numeral 18 indicates a main steam-line which is in communication with the boiler at one end and connected to the pump (not shown) by means of the pipe connections 19.
' The feed-water line 17 and main steam-line 18 are arranged at opposite sides of the water-chamber 2 and are each provided with a suitablevalve 20. The stem 11 of the valve 20 in the feed-water line 17 extends through one side of the water-chamber casing and is connected to the stem 5 of the float, while the stem 6' of the valve 20 in the steam-line 18 extends through the opposite side of the water-chamber casing and is connected to the lever 10. These valve-stems are surrounded where they pass through the water-chamber casings with bushings 6 and 11, respectively. The valve 20 in the pipe 17 of the feed-water line 16 controls the flow of water to the boiler, while the valve 20 in pipe 18 controls the passage of steam to the pump. It will be seen that as the stem 6 of valve 20 in the steam-line enters the Water-chamber at a point above where the stem 11 of valve 20 in the water-line enters said water-chamber if any leakage of steam should occur such leakage is above the water-line in the waterchamber, and the steam escaping will be dry steam. It will also be evident that the float is attached to the lever 10 in such a manner that it will permit of the latter to slide backward and forward when necessary that is to say, if the water gets low in the boiler it also is low in the water-chamber, and the float or lever will be lowered, opening the valves 20 and permitting the passage of steam from the boiler-pipe 18 to the pump and open. the valve 20 in the feed-water line,

permitting the passage of water through the same to the boiler. It will be apparent that when the water gets below the water-line in the boiler the valves will open, increasing the operation of the pump and forcing the Water into the boiler, and that as the Water rises above its leverit Will gradually feed the water to the boiler until the former are closed.
It is thought the many advantages of my improved feed-water regulator can be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and it will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a feed-water regulator, the combination with a boiler, a feed-Water line connected thereto, a steam-line connected to said boiler and to a pump, a water-chamber arranged between the water-line and the steamline, a valve arranged in the steam-line with its stem extending into the water-chamber, a valve arranged in the water-line at a point above the valve in the steam-line and having its stem extending into the water-chamber, a float within the Water-chamber, a stem carried on one end of said float and connected to the stem of the valve in the feed-water line, and a slotted lever carried by the float and connected to the stem of the valve in the steam-line, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a feed-water regulator, the combination with the boiler, a feed-water line, a steamline, and a water-chamber, of a valve arranged in the Water-line with its stem extending into the water-chamber, a like valve arranged in the steam-line above the valve in the Water-line and having its stem extending into the water-chamber, a float within said water-chamber, a stem formed integral with one end of said float and connected within the chamber to the stem of the valve in the water-line, a standard carried by said float, and a lever provided near one end with aslot to receive said standard and havingits other end connected within the chamber to the stem of the valve in the steam-line, substantially as shown and described.
