SMOKERS PIPE. APPLICATION FILE-D OCT. I6. i916.
Patented July 16, 1918 gyn/vento@ :I /d @0929624 nnrrnn JAMES s. ooornn, or NaUdarUcn-connncrronr.
y p sivionnnis Pira.
To all whom 'it may concern.' f Y Be it known that I, JAMES S. Coornn, a citizen of the United States, vresiding at Nangatuek, in the county of New .Havein State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements lin lSmokers7 Pipes; and I do hereby declare the follow ing to be a of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention belongs to the class of smokers pipes.
The object of the invent-ion is to provide a pipe which may be smoked in high winds without the pipe becoming too hot or the burning tobacco being dispelled .by the wind. Furthermore, it is an additional object to construct a pipe which will always provide a cool smoke;7 this advantage being secured by reason of the` inclosed nature et the 1cowl and the particular circuitous path taken by the smoke to the bit or mouthV piece.
ln addition to the above object, the invention consists in the construction of a simple and practical inclosed pipe which may be placed on the market at a practically low cost of manufacture, and with these objects in view and such other. objects as will hereinafter appear relating to the details of construction, my invention will now be fully set forth and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:-
Figure l is a sido elevation of the pipe.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the pipe in its assembled relation,
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and i Fig. 4 a longitudinal section through the body section of the pipe.
o Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents a body or shell of wood f which may have any exterior conformation,
but which terminates at one end in a socket 2 adapted to receive a bit or stem 3. The body 1 is longitudinally bored from the end opposite the socket .2 to form an elongated chamber 4, the latter being adapted to receive the barrel 5 of a complementary cap shell G. The cap shell 6 has its body exteriorly shaped to continue the particular conformation of the body 1, and lits closely up against the free end of the latter. The cap shell 6 is longitudinally recessed or bored Specification of Letters atent.

.in opposition to the chamber i, and has the recess?- extended by reason of the vbarrel 5 which snugly fits' within the chamber -l and carries the screw threads 8 which are adapted to be screwed in the corresponding threads within the bowl or chamber l so that the cap shell 6 may be securely mounted upon the body 1. f i
Extending rearwardly from the bottom of the recess 7 is a duct 9 which joins a diagonal duct 10 which gives out upon the bearing face or front end of the cap shell 6. 'lli/hen the cap shell G is seated upon the body 1, the duct 10 continues through the body 1 to one side of the chamber a as the duct 11, the forward end of the latter terminating in the bottom of the bit socket 2, where it may register with the passage through the latter, Thus, when the body 1 and the cap shell 6 are connected, a continuous smoke passage or duct is provided from the bottom of the tobacco receptacle to the mouth of the bit. Formed in one side of the body 1 is an opening 12 which communicates with the forward end of the chamber al, in position to permit the application of a match to the tobacco contained within the chamber et. A cover plate 13 pivoted to one side of the opening and being adapted to swing thereover provides a closure for the opening 12, any suitable catch or snap device being employed to lock the cover plate 13 is position. In a general direction opposite the opening 12 two or more air passages or ducts 14 are drilled through the body 1, said ducts or passages extending diagonally forward from the bottom of the chamber il to suitable outlets upon the outer surface of the body, the primary object in directing them diagonally forward from the chamber Ll being to direct them away from the direction of the wind so as to protect them from direct draft.
In using the improved pipe, the cap shell (l is unscrewed from the body 1 and the charge of tobacco is packed into the barrel 5. The barrel is then inserted into the body 1 and secured by screwing the cap shell into position, the passages or ducts 10 and 11, when thecap shell is freely seated, coming into registration so as to complete the smoke passage. After the parts 1 and 6 have been assembled, a match is applied to the opening l2 and the pipe lighted in the usual mauner, zitter which the cover plate is returned to closed position. When the pipe is drawn,
the air to the bowl or chamber 4 enters through the passages 14, then through the lighted tobacco mass and lsubs'eq'uently the smoke is passed through the ducts 9, 1Q 1l to the bit 3 in a cool stream. It is obvious from thevregeng thatthe r@ in .the beul or @Hamlder i4 cannot brim unduly hot since the air which is fed to the bowl through the duct 14 is always the same, and the fire cannot be blown upby access of air from heavy winds. The ,ashes from' the pipe arev not scatteredduring the smoking, or blown by unda and 1c2111A bereadily emptied when the smoker is through by unscrewingthe cap shell 6 .and emptying the ashes from the barrel,
What I claim as my invention isz`- n pipe,` comprisilig a body having a bit socket and a chamber bored therein in axial p's ofy this tatent may ottaied. for fiy fnts erch,
from the bottom of the aliiiment, a' cap element closing said chamber, la barrel carried bythe cap and snugly fitted to the interior of said chamber, a passage extending axially forward in the cap cavity therein, anwelongated duct through the body and terminating in the bit socket, an extension duct in the cap element to connect the axially directed passage with the body duct,va lighting opening in the' body rearwardly inclined from said chamber, and draftopeningsval'so. rearwardly directed from the chamber through the body.
vvIn testimony whereof, I ax my signature7 in the presence oftwo Witnesses..
