IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENiNGS FOR JEWELRY-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,238, dated May 28, 1872.
Specification describing a new and Improved Pin-Fastening for J ewelry-Boxes, invented by HENRY HOEFER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York.
I propose to have the pads or cushions used in jewelry-boxes and on stands for holding breast-pins, ear-rings, and other articles having wires by which they are fastened, provided with spring-clamps for securing them by clamping the wires in such manner as to avoid the sticking of the pins or hooking the wires into the cloth, which spoils it.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a cushion or pad, such as commonly used for holding breastpins and the like, provided with a clamp according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a section of the same on the line as m. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a clamp such as I prefer to use, and Fig. 4 is a section of Fig. 3 on the line yy.

A is the block of wood or other suitable material, permanently fixed within the cushion to the back piece B, or it maybe in any other suitable way, and G is another block hinged to it at the rear or bottom side, as shown at D, preferably so that it will swing toward and from back piece B. E is a spring of soft vulcanized India rubber, fastened to both the blocks in such manner as to draw the upper or front elongated corner or edge F of block (3 against the corner of block A, as shown clearly in Figs. 2 and 4. The cloth cover of the cushion is arranged between these two blocks, as shown at G, Fig. 1, and E, Fig. 2,
so that when the spring jaw U is pushed backpunching the cloth, thus preserving it without injury to which it is subject when the pins or hooks are stuck through it. For releasing the articles held, the said spring-jaws will be opened the same as for securing it.
I may use any approved arrangement of jaws and any kind of spring, and I may arrange the jaws so that the movable one will move in any other direction; but I prefer the arrangement here shown, because when the cushion is placed in the bottom of a jewelrybox it will be most convenient to open the jaws by pushing downward on the movable one.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A jewelry pad or cushion, provided with I jaws for clamping a pin or wire and holding it by spring pressure, substantially as specified.
2. I also claim the fixed jaw A, movable jaw G,and spring E, combined with a cushion or pad, substantially as specified.
