The reference character 37 indicates a carrier block having rear side faces 37' converging at rightangles and aligned to the V-shape corresponding to the corner of an article supported on the table or plate 24. The upper end ofsaid carrier block is provided with a central longitudinal rib 38 to define the inner boundaries of longitudinal guideways 39 on each side thereof in which are slidably disposed shim plates 40, the opposite sides of the respective guideways being formed by bosses 41 with which the upper end of said carrier block is provided. Formed in each rear side face 37 of said carrier block is a. vertical slideway 42 hav ing undercut sides, and in which are slidably disposed the slide-shoes 43 of punchplates 44 and 45. Said punch plates are. individually capable of a limited vertical movement relative to said carrier'block for purposes ofadjustment as will be hereinafter more fully explained, and to such end keeper screws 46 are passed through vertical slots 47 in said punch plates and screwed into the body of said carrier block. Disposed over the upper end of said carrier block 37 and overhanging the rear side faces 37' thereof so as to form an abutment for theupper ends of said punch plates 44 and is a: keeper plate 48, which also closes over'the guideways 39 of said shim plates 40. Said keeper plate is retained in proper assembled relation to said carrier block by dowel pins 49 or in any other suitable or convenient manner. Yieldably supported in connection with the underside of said carrier block is a clamp plate 50. This clamp plate is suspended from the carrier block by screws 51 the heads of which are countersunk in the carrier block body with the shanks extending slidably and downwardly therethrough and into threaded connection with the clamp plate, compression springs 52 being arranged around the screw shanks bet-ween the underside of the carrier block and said clamp plate, thus mounting the clamp plate for upward yielding movement. The clamp plate may be provided on its under side with a facing 53 of leather or any other relatively non-abrasive material. Additional compression springs 54 may be suitably arranged between the clamp plate 50 and carrier block 37 as shown in the drawings if it is so desired. The carrier block 37 with the parts assembled in connection therewith in the manner above described, is secured to the under side of the top jaw member so as to move therewith;

The operation of the tool when used in applying corner ornaments to leather articles and the like is as follows An article A upon which it is desired to secure a selected corner ornament C is disposed on the supporting plate 24 (after the corner ornament G has been loosely applied thereto) so that the same is aligned with and in front of the ll-shaped forward end of the corner setting plate 29, whereupon the operator presses together the tool handles or lever members 1718. The first effect of the manipulation of the tool handles is to lower the clamp plate 50 into gripping rela tion to the article A so that the same is imniovably held upon the supporting plate 24. As soon as the article A is thus clamped, continued movement of the j members 15-16 toward each other carries the cam-rods 35 downward so that their cam-port-ions 36 operatively engage and thrust forward the corner setting plate 29, whereby the for ward end of the same thrusts the corner ornament C snugly home over the corner of the article A and thereupon holds the same subject to the operation of the punch plates 44-45 which descent upon the ornament so as to squeeze or pinch the same to cause the prongs P with which it is provided (see Fig. 12) to penetrate the material of the article A to be thereby securely fastened to the latter. Inasmuch as the clamp plate 50 is yieldably supported the same will yield to the continued movement of the jaw members, necessary {,0 the operations abovede scribed, once it engages the article, as will be understood from an inspection of the drawings. The upper ends of the punchplates Pl-45 will be caused to abut the overhanging portions of the keeper plate 48, whereupon operative downward pressure or thrust is imparted thereto when they encounter the corner ornament C to be secured.
It sometimes occurs that one side of a corner of an article will be thicker than the other side, due to pocket openings, etc, and consequently in order to properly squeeze down an applied corner ornament it would be necessary that the punch plate over the thin side be projected further down than would be punch plate over the thick side. In order to provide for the variations of position of either punch plate according to the circumstances I provide slidable shim plates 40, one cooperating with each punch plate and independently manipulatable. Each shim plate 40 has an upstanding finger-piece 40 and the keeper plate 48 is provided with slots 48' to accommodate the movement of said finger pieces. The shimplates 40 may be moved rearwardlv to in terpose portions of the same between the upper ends of the punch plates and. said keeper plate 48, so that the punch plates may be adjusted to pinch the corner ornaments on the thinner portions of an article when conditions so require.
From the above description it will be clear that the present invention furnishes a very handy tool for the character of work mentioned; the same being simple, compact and easy to operate.
It will be obvious that many variations in the specific structures described may he made without departing from the spirit of my invention, consequently said structures are to be taken as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a hand tool of the kind described, a pair of jaw members having pivoted handle members for moving the same toward and from each other, means connected with one jaw member for supporting an article and ornament to be secured thereto, means on the opposite jaw member for holding the article against displacement, cooperative means carried by said jaw-members for setting or holding the ornament in desired relation to the article, and plural punch means also carried by said opposite jaw member and independently adjustable thereupon to engage and force said ornament into attached relation to the article.
2. In a hand tool of the kind described, a pair of jaw members having pivoted handle members for moving the same in parallel relation toward and from each other, means connected with one jaw member for supporting an article and ornament to be secured thereto, means on the opposite jaw member for holding thearticle against displacement, cooperatlve means carried by said punch means also carried by said opposite jaw member to engage and force said ornament into attached relation to the article, and means to adjust said punch means for variations in thickness of the article to which said ornament is to be attached.
3. In a hand tool of the kind described, a bottom jaw member, a top jaw member, means to move said jaw members towards and from each other while maintained in parallel relation, a supporting plate connected with said bottom jaw member to support an article and ornament to be secured thereto, a yieldable clamp means connected with the top jaw member to hold the article against displacement from said supporting plate, a setting plate slidable on said supporting plate to move and hold an ornament in assembled relation to the article, means carried by said top jaw member for operating said setting plate, and a pair of punch plates also carried by said top jaw member for securing said ornament in attached assembled relation to said article.
4. In a hand tool of the kind described, a

In a hand tool of the kind described, a bottom jaw member, a top aw member pivoted handle members adapted to move said jaw members toward and from each other, a supporting plate connected with said bottom jaw member to support an article and ornament to be secured thereto, a carrier means connected with said top jaw member, a clamp plate yieldably connected with the under side of said carrier means to hold the article against displacement from said supporting plate, a setting plate slidable on said supporting plate to move and hold an ornament in assembled relation to the article, spaced cam-rods movable with said top jaw member for operating said setting plate, punch plates connected with said carrier means engagable with said assembled ornament to secure the same in attached relation to said article, means to mount said punch plates for individual limited vertical adjusting movement relative to said carrier means, said carrier means having abutments to back said punch plates, and shim plates slidably connected with said carrier means for selective interposition between said punch plates and said abutments.

In a hand tool of the kind described, a bottom jaw member, a top jaw member, pivoted handle members adapted to move said jaw members toward and from each other while retaining the same in parallel relation, a supporting plate connected with said bottom aw member to support an arti ole and ornament to be secured thereto, a carrier block connectedwith said top jaw member, said carrier block having converg ing rear sides at right angles one to the other, a clamp plate to hold an article against displacement from said supporting plate, and a pair of punch plates mounted respectively on the rear sides of said carrier block.
