Description

UNITED FREDERICK HELLER, OF NEW R NEW JERSEY.
JEWELRY NOVELTY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 9, 1918.
Application filed March 16, 1916. Serial No. 84,577.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, F nnmnuon HELLER, a citizen of the United States of America, resident of Newark, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jewelry Novelties, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in jewelry novelties, and particularly as one embodiment a flexible bracelet having the appearance of a solid or continuous bracelet. It is an. object of the invention to provide such a jewelry novelty which will possess both exteriorly and inlveriorly, a
' smooth and finished appearance, which because of its flexibility will naturally assume graceful lines, and at the same time will in no way b suggestive of the mechanical means employed for bringing about these advantageous features. Another object is to provide such a jewelry novelty which will be strong, simple to manufacture, seamless and solderless, and highly resistant to wear.
With these and other objects in view, my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, and will. be hereinafter more fully described with reference thereto, and finally pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment, as for instance, a bracelet made according to my invention,
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the chain units,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the outer or cover units,
Fig. 4 is a plan view of a portion of the bracelet,
Fig. 5 is a side View thereof,
Fig. 6 shows the bracelet in process of assembling, and
Fig. 7 is a sectional view of a modified form of cover unit.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, my improved bracelet comprises a plurality of chain units,
10 and outer or cover units 11, which fit respectivel over each chain unit. The chain units are -shaped, consisting of side portions 12, and 13, the reduced connecting ortion 14 and reduced inturned ends 15 an 16 at the end of the side portions. Adjacent the connecting ortion 14-. the side portions are bent inwar y as at 17 and 18, so that a recess is provided at each end of a depth corresponding substantially to the thickness of the metal. Openings 19 and 20 are provided respectively in the said portions 17 and 18, of suilicient size to accommodate the inturned ends 15 and 16 of the next adjacent unit. The upper edges of the side portions are carried downwardly to ihe "front face of the inturncd end as at 21 and 22, and. the under edges are recessed as at 23 and 24, to permit of hinged movement, of the parts inwardly, as hereinafter pointed out The metal is preferably slightly springy, and the unnssembled side portions flare outwardly as clearly shown in Figs. and (3.
The cover members 11 are preferably seamless, being formed from tubular metal, and are rectangular in crosssection. ()ne end thereof is convex as at 25, and the opposite end is concave as at 26. This concavity extends from the upper outer surface to the lower inner surface, so that th edge 27 of the lower wall is straight, as clearly indicated in Fig. 3.
There is a slight difference in the length of the chain and cover units, snflieient to allow for the connecting of the chain. units.
The bracelet assembled as shown in Fig. 6 the cover units being slid over the chain units, forcing the iniurned ends 15 and 16 oi one unil into the op nings 19 and 20 of the adjacent unit. There is a substan tially snug fit between the chain and cover units, and by reason of the springiness of the chain units, there is sufiicient friction between the parts to hold the same in proper position with respect to each other. The convex end of each cover member extends over the connection between the chain units, and fits the concave end of the next memher. The straight edge 27 and the recesses 23 and 24 permit movement of the sections in one direction suflicient to form a flexible ring. In the other direction the movement is more restricted as it is not desirable to bend the bracelet in this way. The outer surface by reason of the close fitting of the concave and convex ends, presents a substan tially continuous appearance. The end sections 30 and 31 are suitably secured, preferably by soldering, and are provided with a catch device 32 in the usual manner.
Instead of the straight edge 27, a tapered edge 33 may he provided as shown in Fig. 7, which is rounded by the same tool which rounds out the concavity. The cover unit (ill bracelet of great art istio bounty is pi'inlu'uei l without uni suggestion the mecl' anicul meihf empl 3M for Um l1 ging n bou't'thc vairi ous features which lcml to its desirability;
for the use intended.
My. improvements may take the foi'nnuf watclt'fobs, chains, handles for vaility" cases;
and similar other uses wherein chwinllke constructions fincladaptation.-
I have ill ustrated a preferred and sat'rsfa c tot'y form of-my invention, butit'is obviuus that chafnges may he nizvde tllcruin, within the spirit and scopethereof, as defined in the appended claim.
