Two embodiments of myinvention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, and the novel features will be pointed out in the appended claims.

In the preferred form of my invention,

shown in Figs- 1 to 5 inclusive, the case com prises two lids or covers A, B, formed at one edge with hinge sleeves or eyes A, B respectively, throughwhich extends a pintle C, the hinge eyes A, B alternating with each other. At its central portion the pintle C carries a spiral spring D which tends to swing the lids A, B apart in the customary manner. The pintle C is also adapted to pass through eyes E formed at one end of arms or brackets E, the other ends of which are secured to the bottom of the holder proper F. This holder is preferably made of corrugated sheet metal, so as to form pockets or seats for the cigarettes or similar articles to be carried in the case. (Fig. 2) are adapted to hold the cigarettes in said pockets. A catch or clasp a, a of any suitable character is provided to hold the case in the closed position.

In order to keep the holder firmly in a position midway between the two lids, when the case is opened, hooks F, F are formed on the bottom of the holder on opposite sides and near opposite ends thereof; that is, one hook, F, will be on one side of the holder at or near one end, and the other hook, F, will be on the other side, at or near the other end. The free ends of these hooks extend downwardly and inwardly and are adapted to engage hook-shaped extensions A, B respectively of the lids A, B; the extension A is formed on the lid A at or near one end of the hinge so as to come into engagement with the hook F when the case is swung open, while the other extension, B is formed on the lid B at or near the other end of the hinge, so as to come into engage ment with the hook F. WVith the case in the closed position, the hook-like extensions or hooks A, B will be out of engagement with the hooks F, F, as shown in Fig. 5; when the case is opened and thelids are swung apart by the action of the spring D,

the hooks A, B will come into engagement with the hooks F, F, thus bringing the holder F into a position midway between the two lids and holding it firmly in this position. This will also limit the opening movement of the case, as the lids can not swing apart farther than the position shown in Figs. 1 and 4. It will be seen that as long as the case remains in the fully opened position, the holder can not be swung either to one side or the other, the hooks A, B preventing such movement.

In the modification shown in Figs. 6 to 9, the lids and holder proper are of the same general construction as in Figs. 1 to 5. In Fig. 6 the plate G hinged to the holder has been omitted merely to simplify the drawing. In this second form, however, the holder proper is not connected with the hinge of the case, that is to say, the brackets E with their eyes E are omitted. In order to secure the holder within the case, the bottom of the holder F* has or is formed with, two pairs of hooks F F adapted to be engaged by a corresponding number of hook-shaped extensions A, B formed on the lids A B respectively, at their portions adjacent to the hinge. The hooks F F all face inward with their open portions and are disposed in such a manner that the hooks F will be engaged by the hooks A on the lid A and the hooks F by the hooks B on the lid B The operation of the case is the same as described in connection with the preferred form of my invention. The hooks of course will be of such a shape that even in the closed position of the case they will be in engagement (see Fig. 9). In order to prevent lateral movement of the holder after it has been mounted in the case, I prefer to make the holder bottom with small extensions F at the two ends, which are originally in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 7. The lids being in the position Fig. 8, the holder proper can then be slipped on endwise (parallel to the hinge), whereupon the extensions F are bent downward, as shown in Fig. 6, thus preventing the holder from being moved laterally of the case.

Various modifications may be made with out departing from the nature of my invention as set forth in the appended claims. Thus the number of hooks used may be varied, and furthermore it is not essential that the hooks be integral with the parts from which they project. By suitably choosing the dimensions, the case may be adapted to hold articles other than cigarettes.

I claim:

1. A case of the character described, com prising a pair of hinged lids provided, near the ends of their hinged portions, with hooks facing in opposite directions, and a holder located between the lids and con nected with the hinge thereof, said holder being provided, near one end, with a hook extending in one direction to engage the hook on one of the lids, and also provided, near the other end, with a hook extending in the opposite direction to engage the hook on the other lid, said holder hooks being secured to the holder rigidly.

2. A case of the character described, comprising a pair of hinged lids provided at their hinged portions with hooks facing in opposite directions, the hooks which are on different lids, lying in different transverse planes, with respect to the hinge axis, and a holder located between said lids and connected therewith, said holder being provided the hinge thereof, said holder bein pro vided, near one end, with a lug extending in one direction to engage the lug on one of the lids, and also provided, near the other end, with a lug extending in the opposite direction to engage the lug on the other lid, said holder lugs being secured to the holder rigidly.

4. A case of the character described, comprising a pair of hinged lids provided at their hinged portions with lugs facing in opposite directions, the lugs which are on different lids, lying in different transverse planes, with respect to the hinge axis, and a holder located between said lids and connected therewith, said holder being pro- ETHELBERT R.
