FUEL-BURNER.
Application filed April 2, 1917.
To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, JosErrI F. SPIEGEL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the city of Toronto, county of York, Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in F ucl-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means particularly adapted for firing steam and hot water boilers of the fire tube type, and my 0bjeCt is to devise means for using a gaseous or vaporized fuel with such a boiler in such a manner that the ordinary fire box may be dispensed with and the fire tubes lengthened, thus increasing the heating surface without increasing overall length.
I attain my object by locating close to the rear tube plate of the boiler a burner plate provided with a fuel jet located opposite each lire tube. Each jet is provided with a Vmixing chamber communicating with gas and air conduits suitably controlled so that the proportions of air and gas may be va- A ried. Each tube is thus separately fired.
The apparatus is constructed inl detail substantially as hereinafter described and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section showing my burner applied to a locomotive boiler;
Fig. 2 a rear elevation of the same; and
Fig. 3 a sectional detail of one of the burner jets.
In the drawings like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
1 is a locomotive boiler of which 2 are the lire tubes. rIhe back tube sheet 3 is, however, located at the rear end of the boiler and the ordinary fire box dispensed with, so that greater heating surface is obtained owing to the greater length of the tubes. The fuel burning arrangement I employ is provided with a separate fluid jet 4 for each lire tube. The jets are located close to, but do not extend into the lire tubes, the iame being projected into the tubes and the products of combustion drawn through the tubes by suitable draft creating means hereinafter described. The jets are thus easily removed to enable access to be had to the fire tubes for cleaning or repair. purposes.
The jets are therefore preferably supported so that they may be simultaneously re- Specicaton of Letters Patent.

moved or returned to position. I show one embodiment of my invention in the present drawings in which I employ a burner frame 5 suitably supporting the supply conduits for the jets 4L. Supported in the mouth of cach jet is a conical spreader 6, which causes a combustible mixture issuing from the jet to have a cylindrical form, so that the burning gases from the moment of ignition contact with the surface of the fire tubes at all points of the inner surface of the latter.
Behind each jetfis located a mixing chamber 7 to which air and the Huid to be burnt are separately conducted. Preferably the fluid employed is a gas or vapor.
To the frame are secured a series of gas conduits 8 alternated with a series of air conduits 9. rIhese conduits are connected with the mixing chambers by pipes 10 so that each mixing chamber is connected with one air conduit and one gas conduit.
The gas conduits 8 are connected by the gas supply pipe 12 and the air conduits 9 by the air supply pipe 13. Each conduit is preferably provided with a controlling valve 11.
Compressed air will be supplied through the pipe 13 and gas under pressure through the pipe 12. Each pipe will be provided with a manually operable controlling valve 14, the valves being preferably connected for simultaneous operation. An automatic regulating valve 15 of any ordinary type will also be located in each of the pipes 12 and 13. These automatic valves will be controlled by steam pressure from the boiler, so that the supply of air and gas is automatically controlled to maintain any desired steam pressure in the boiler.
It will be necessary, of course, to arrange the automatic regulating valves so that they will at all times allow sufficient air and gas to pass to maintain a pilot light sufficient to insure the proper lighting of all the jets when there is a demand for re-firing of the boiler.
The burner frame 5 is preferably hinged, being provided with trunnions 16 adapted to rest -in open bearings'l'? on the boiler end. A latch 18 is provided on the burner plate and is adapted to engage a keeper 19 on the boiler shell. When the latch is released, the burner plate may be swung back to obtain access to the fire tubes or for the purpose of cleaning or repairing the jets.
Draft may be obtained in the usual manner by the use of the eXhaust steam or mechanical draft may be provided if desired.
From the above description it Will ybe seen that I have devised means for burning a gaseous fuel Which Will enable perfect control of the .firing to be obtained, Which Will enable the=old fire boX'to `be dispensed with and the heatingsurface ofthe locomotive thus increased7 which Will apply the products of'combustion directly tothe fire tubes and with which perfect accessibility tothe fire tubes and burner sheets is obtained.
It will be understood, of course, .that the burner may be used in an ordinary fire box to considerable advantage, though I deem the location of the burner shown as preferable.
l/Vhat `I claim as-my invention is 1. A fluid burner comprising; a .plurality of rows of jets eaclrprovided with amixing chamber; aplurality of separate alternated air and .gas conduits; pipes connectingeach mixing' chamber With an-air conduit; pipes connecting each mixing' chamber `With agas conduit; a common air supply pipe communicating' With all the air conduits and a common fuel supply pipe communicating with all the fuel conduits.
2. A fluid burner comprising a plurality of rows of jets, a plurality of separate alternated air and gas conduits communicating` with the rows of jets; a controlling valve for each conduit; a common air supply pipe communicating` with all the air conduits and a common fuel supply pipe communicating with all the fuel conduits; an automaticregulating valve in each supply pipe; and a manually controlled regulatingv `valve kin each supply pipe.
3. In a fluid burner, the combination of a-mininp,l chamber; a gassupply .pipe communicating' With saidchamber, an air supply pipe communicating with said chamber; a detachable jet .provided With an .inner end of reduced diameter screwed into an opening in said chamber; and aconical spreaderlocated Within vthe jet With its point extending :Wit-hin the Apart of reduced diameter.
