Description

` F.HUBER. improvement in1Ex'tens'ora-'l'anblesfv N0, 127,168, Patented May 28,1872.
A l l l UNITED STATES FRIDOLIN HUBER, OF FRANKLIN, INDIANA.
IMPRQVEMENT IN EXTENSION TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,168, dated May 28, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRIDOLIN HUBER, of Franklin, in the county of Johnson and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Extension Tables; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully un derstand and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 is a top view of the table, partly open, as illustrative of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view, partly broken away, and a portion of the frame of the table being removed. Fig. 3 is a transverse section in line a: Fig. l. Fig. 4 is an end View.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention consists in providing 'the i11- terior of the` body or frame of the table with grooved ledges for stowing the detachable leaves, and, when thus stowed, to prevent rubbing of .one with another. It also consists in the construction of the body of the table in connection with the sliding leaves and detachable, leaves.
Referring tothe drawing, A represents the frame of the table, and B the legs thereof. 0n the Ytop of the body A, at the center thereof, I secure a bridge, C, which extends transversely, and is of length equal to the length of the leaves 0f the table. D represents the two extension leaves, which have the usual longitudinal motions, and are arranged at the ends of the table, as usually. These extension leaves are made removable from the body or frame A. To their under ends are attached, by dovetail joints or otherwise, slides E E, which extend longitudinally, and are adapted to slide under the bridge C and come to a bearingtherewith. These slides rest in grooves or openings F cut orformed in the end pieces Gr of the body or frame A, so that they are guided at one portion of their length by the grooves F, and at another portion by the bridge C, to which may be attached blocks or pieces l G to assist the operation of guiding. Stops H are secured to the slides to limit the outward play of the latter, and consequently ot the extension leaves.
- It will thus be seen thatA the bridge serves to hold the extension leaves in place through the medium of the slides E; but the said leaves are readily removable by merely raising their outer ends, which operation clears the slides of the bridge and permits the displacement of the leaves. This removal will be found useful in cases of transportation, general repairs of the leaves consequent upon breaking or warping, and similar purposes. The bridge C also serves to steady the usual detachable leaves of the table at the middle thereof, inasmuch as it provides au immovable fixture at that point, and thus serves to hold the said detachable leaves down on the body of the table.
The frame or body A is internally provided with grooved ledges J, arranged to form a series of ways or passages which communicate with openings Kin the end pieces of the frame.
`In these passages the detachable leaves L are to be slipped when not in use, so as to be out of the way, yet at all times within convenient reach. The arrangement of the side and central ledges and end openings prevent abrasion and scratching of the leaves L when stowed away. Thus a space in the frame of the table, otherwise vacant, is utilized as a place of deposit or reception for the detachable leaves.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The grooved ledges J J J, in connection with the series of openings K in the body or frame A, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The end pieces G of the body A, having l
