TUBE OR FLUE CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,961, dated February 20, 1900.
Application filed March 14, 1899.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, ISIDOR JOHN BAPrIsr IIANTEN, residing at Kranzburg, and JOHN JOSEPH KRANZ, residing at Watertown, in the county of Oodington, in the State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tube-Cutters, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention is an improvement in tubecutters for cutting oft the tubes of tubular boilers and the like; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter de-v scribed, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side viewoi' our cutter as in use. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on about line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a cross-sectional View on about line 3 3 of Fig. 2. The tube-cutter includes a stock A, which is shown in detail in Fig. 5. This stock is slotted from its inner end at A to receive the tong-like arms, has the transverse openings A2 for the pivot-pin of said arms, and is provided in rear of its slot A with the grooves or recesses A3, which receive the springs for actuating the arms. The body of the stock is threaded at A4 from its rear end for engagement with the tube used in withdrawing the cut tube, and a tenon A5 is provided at the outer end of the stock A for the connection of the extension-tube B, which may be used in any desired number of sections for the pur-- pose of extending the stock, as may be necessary. At the outer end of the extensiontubes B we provide the handle B by which Serial No 709,113. (No model.)
2, is fitted onthe threaded portion A4 of the stock when the cutter is used for cutting the tubes, thus protecting the threads A4 until it is desired to apply the sameV to the tube or cover employed in withdrawing the tubes, as shown in Fig. 9.
The stock has a threaded bearing or bore D, in which tits the screw-shaft E, having the handle E at its outer end and swiveled at its inner end to the spreading-wedge F, as shown in Fig. 2.
The tong-like arms G are shown in detail in Fig. 4, being pivoted between their ends by the pin H between the arms formed'by slotting the stock at A', as before described. These arms are alike and are flattened at their central pivotal portions G, have at their front ends the laterally-widened portions G2, which receive the cutters I, and have their rear arms G3 extended and adapted at G4 Yto be acted on by the free ends of the springs J, Whose other ends are seated and secured in the recesses A3 of the stock A.
The ends or heads G2 of the arms G are provided with recesses g for the cutters I, such recesses being made sufficiently large to form grease-cups for heavy grease, such as tallow, to lubricate the cutters during the cutting operations. It will therefore be noticed, especially in Figs. 1 and 2, that the recesses g are widened in the direction of the axes of the disk cutters. In Order to properly secure suiticient grease to serve its purpose and to properly steady and guide the cutters in such grease-cup, we prefer to provide them on their opposite sides with the hub-like portions, as shown in Fig. 2.
The parts are shown in Figs.-1 and 2 in position for cutting Off the boiler-tube. By turning the stock by means of the lever B and from time to time turning the lever E' to cause the wedge F to spread the cutters the boiler-tube may be quickly cut. It may then be removed, to which end we provide, as shown in Fig. 9, a sleeve or cover-tube K,l which may, when the sleeve O is removed, be fitted over the stock, so that the threads A4 of the IOO stock will engage the threads K of the tube K, the tube K beingheld from turning by means of its lateral arm K2, having a pin K3, which enters one of the tubes of the boiler, as shown in Fig. 9. If now the disk cutters I have been removed and the blocks L substituted therefor, as shown in Fig. 9, and the stock be rapidly turned, it is manifest that the bearing of the threads A4 in the tube K will cause the stock to move outward to withdraw the cut tube length engaged by the pulling-blocks, as shown in Fig. 9.
The screw-shaft E may be extended by means of added sections threaded or otherwise coupled thereto to any desired extent.
The cover-sleeve C may be extended to form a guide fitting into the tube to be out, or separate guide-washers may be employed, as shown in Fig. l2 of the drawings.
By supporting the cutter-disks on the tonglike arms we are able to exert great power in spreading the cutters, their supporting-arms being securely fitted and firmly held in the slot of the stock.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination in a tube-cutter of the stock provided in its end with a longitudinal slot and in rear thereof with a threaded bearing, the ton g-like arms crossed between their ends, pivoted at the crossing together and to the stock and fitted in the longitudinal slot of said stock and provided in their outer arms with the disk cutters, the threaded shaft turning in the bearing of the stock and provided with the wedge for spreading the cutters, and the springs for contracting the cutters substantially as set'forth.
2. In a tube -cutter substantially as described, the combination of the hollow stock having near its outer end a threaded bearing, the tong-like arms pivoted within the stock ata point between their ends and having their outer ends provided with the c utters arranged to operate when their inner ends are spread apart, the spreadin g-wed ge operating between the inner ends of the arms, and the shaft threaded in the threaded bearing of the stock and arranged to spread the arms substantially as set forth.
3. In a tube-cutter the combination of the stock having a slot and a threaded bearing, the tong-like arms operating in the slot of the stock and pivoted thereto, the spreadingwedge, the screw-shaft for operating the same and the springs substantially as set forth.
4. In a tube-cutter the combination of the disk cutters having the hub portions on their opposite sides, the supports for said cutters having recesses in which the cutters are pivoted, such recesses being enlarged to form grease-cups and the hub portions of the cutters operating to secure the saine steadily within the recesses substantially as set forth.
5. The combination substantially as herein described of the stock having the threaded portion A4, the arms pivoted to said stock, means for spreading such ends of the arms, the cover-sleeve provided with means whereby it is held from turning and having threads fitting the threads A4 of the stock, and means whereby the stock may be turned in the said cover-sleeve substantially as set forth.
