EDWIN F. coBB,
To all whom t may concern: y
Beit known that I-,YEDWIN F. CoBB,-a citizen of the United States, residing at 'Denveig inthe city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, 'havefinvented'fcentain new and useful Improvements'in Pack age-Ties; and Ido hereby declarel the fol- I lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as -will enable others skilled in the artito whichit appertains to make and u'sethe same. y i
My invention relates to improvements in tying devices for `packages andresides'inithe provision of a simple, inexpensive"and*r effective device by means of which a cord may be securely held in proper position upon a package, bundle or the like without necessitating knotting thereof.
Another object is to provide a device of the character described that maybe readily stamped out of a single blank of metal, will permit of the use of a cord a number of times and which is inexpensive to manufacture.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointedv out as claimed.
lith reference to the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts.
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a package or bundle showing my device in position thereon,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my improved package tie, and
Fig. 3 is an end elevation.
Referring to the drawings by characters 0f reference, 1 designates as an entirety the body portion of my package tie which consists of an' elongated shank'that is curved at one end and provided with a T-shaped head 2 and is reduced at the point of its formation with said head so that a tie cord 3 may be looped or suitably secured to the shank 1 about the head 2 as at 4. lT he body portion 1 is bowed intermediate 1ts ends and formed preferably of some vsuitable spring metal.
The end of the body portlon 1 farthest removed from the head 2 is bent back to y Specication of Letters latent. i'
providean overlying or hook portion 5 that' is parallel to the body portion approxi-'fmately and one side edge of the hook por# tion 5 lies Hush with the adjacent side'edge p I Patented July 2,1918,

the 'adjacentside edge-of the shankoflthe"Y y body 1. The point of connection between# the extension 6 and the hook portion fis disposed Vinwardly ofethe free and connected ends of the hook portion, as shown in Fig. 1 of thedrawing.; Atonguev Tis dis# posed in spaced relation with the inner edge of the hook 5 and is curved upwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, and is carried by the adjacent end of the extension 6. The opposite end of the extension 6 is provided with a tongue 8, which is disposed beyond the point of juncture between the'hook and the shank of the body 1 and spaced therefrom, as shown in Fig. 1, and is terminally curved upwardly.` The tongue or extension 7 is disposed over the central part of the body plate l and in being turned up enables the close positioning thereof relative to the body portion to insure a clamping action andat the same time the ready insertion of the cord between itself and the body plate. The overlying portion 5 is arranged very close to the body plate 1 so that the cord 3 will be clamped between the portion 5 and body plate l as will be later more Vfully described.
In operation one end of the cord is secured to the T-shaped head 2 of the tie and the tie is placed upon the package or bundle and held with the left hand while the cord is wound once about the package or bundle parallel with the tie and brought under the portion 5 and then at right angles to the Ltion 5 and again between the extension. 6
and body plate 1 a number of times to bind the cord. The recesses between the tongues 7 and 8 and the hook 5prevent that portion of the cord which is wrapped around the extension 6 from shifting llaterally in either direction. The spring action of the device assists in securing the cord in position. It Will be readily seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive and eifectivedevice that may be operated in an expeditious manner to securely hold the oord in position.
ln practice, l have found that the forni ofiny *invent-ioi1,"il1lustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, Nas the preferred embodiment7 is the most efficient -and practical; yet realizing that the conditions 4concurrent with `the adoption of my zdevice will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in ,details l of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be `12esorted to, when required, Without sacrifieing any ,of the ladvantalffgfes of `my invention, asset forth.
What lisclainied is y:-
A qpaekage tie comprising an elongated body plate'having one end thereof bent back upon itself to provide a hook portion overlying the plate, the opposite end of the plate being provided with a 'IT-shaped head, said hook engaging portion having an enlarged 'lateral extension extending beyond one of "the longitudinal side edges of the plate, a
retaining tongue formed on the forward end ,of said gextension and extending tovvard the opposite longitudinal edge of the body plate and lying parallel with the `hook ,p ortion, and la second retaining tongue formed 0.11 the rear edge of the extension kand extending rearwardly therefrom, as and for the purposespeoied- 1.11 testimony whereof I aiX my Signature in presence of two Witnesses. n
