- This invention relates to package ties and it is the principal object of the invention to provide a novel device for positively securing the free ends of a cord or like strand in order that the same can be maintained taut about a bundle or package without the necessity of mounting the same.

To all whom it may concern) Be it known that I, HORAGE L. :GERHART, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Doylestown, in the county of Bucks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Package- Ties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to package ties and it is the principal object of the invention to provide a novel device for positively securing the free ends of a cord or like strand in order that the same can be maintained taut about a bundle or package without the necessity of mounting the same.
Another and equally important object of the invention is to provide a package tie which may be quickly and effectively engaged with the free ends of the cord and a construction which will simplify and reduce the cost of manufacture of constructions of this character and provide novel details in the construction and arrangement of parts with a view to higher efliciency generally.
The improvements in the details and arrangement of parts will be apparent from an inspection of the accompanying drawings, in connection with the specific description hereinafter contained, and wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed for the purpose of imparting a full understanding of the same.

Having more particular reference to the drawings and in connection with which like reference characters will designate corresponding parts throughout the several. views, 1 represents the base plate of the improved tie, the same being tapered and having a cord receiving opening 2 formed in pI'OXlIIlity to one end thereof while a hooked guide member 3 is formed on one side of the base plate adjacent the cord receiving opening 2 for a purpose which will be subsequently described. Extending laterally from one side of the tapered base plate 1 is a finger engaging piece 4 whereby the tie may be properly held during the arrangement of the cord 5 about the bundle or package. In this connection, it is to be noted that one end of the plate 1 is formed with a longitudinally disposed substantially V-shaped corrugations and has its opposite sides upturned to provide a concavo-convex as at 6, a spring wire substantially V-shaped clip 7 being secured to the plate 1 adjacent the V-shaped corrugation 6 by soldering or like means. It is to be here noted, that if desired, the clip 7 may be struck from the base plate 1 or suitable'openings may be formed therein whereby the extremities of the clip may be passed therethrough and then clenched.
In using my improved package tie, and assuming that a cord is engaged with the base plate of the same, the tie is held in proper position with relation to the bundle or package by means of the laterally extending finger piece 4, whereupon the cord 5 is passed over the hooked guide, element 3 at substantially right angles to the base plate and is passed about the bundle, transversely of the same, whereupon it may be then arranged longitudinally of the bundle and the remaining or free end engaged under the spring clip 7 and thus positively secured against displacement, thereby insuring the holding of the cord in taut condition about the bundle. It will of course be appreciated, that the cord or other strand may be arranged in different manners about the bundle and engaged with the package tie in an efficient manner. The above, however, is offered as an example to explain the operation for application of the device.
Due to the concavo-convex portion 6 formed in the widened end of the base plate 1, it follows that the spring clip 7 will positively secure a cord or strand engaged therewith against displacement. F urther, the cord or strand will not be cut or mutilated.
Manifestly, the construction shown is capable of considerable modification and such modification as is within the scope of my claims, I consider within the spirit of my invention.
I claim 1. A package tie including a base plate having cord receiving means arranged adjacent one end thereof, a hooked guide element arranged on the side of the base plate adjacent sald end thereof, the remaining end of the base plate being formed with a longitudinally disposed substantially V-shaped corrugation, and a substantially V-shaped spring clip arranged adjacent said Vl-shaped corrugation having its free end disposed inwardly for receiving and securing the free end of a tying cord between the same and the corrugation.
2. A package tie including a base late having cord receiving means adjacent one end thereof, a guide element arranged ad'acent said end of the base plate, the remalning end of said base plate being enlarged and formed With a longitudinally disposed V-shaped corrugation, the opposite sides of said last mentioned end of the base plate being upturned whereby to provide a c0ncav0- convex gripping surface, and a substantially V-shaped spring clip secured to the enlarged end of the plate adjacent the V-shaped corrugation having its free end disposed inwardly whereby to receive a tying connec tion and to secure the same between the clip and the V-shaped corrugation.
