Description

C. A. MULDER.
SAFETY RAZOR.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 16. I917.
Patented July 2, 1918.
@Ziaruey {UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CORNELIS ARIAN MULDER, F AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS.
' following is a speci cation.
This invention relates to a safety-razor, and has for its object to provide a simple and cheap instrument which has all the advantages of the known safety-razors and besides this also the special advantage that .the blades used in the instrument can be manufactured at very small cost.
The holder of the instrument consists for a part of a combination of known features; the essential part is however the blade which is very narrow, measuring in width about {3 of an inch.
In carrying out the invention I employ the novel combination, arrangement and details of construction hereinafter shown, described, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings illustrative of the invention Figure 1 is a side-view of the razor. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the base-plate which carries the screw stem and pins for the securement of the blade. Fig. 3 1s a plan view of the toothed closinglate provided with holes for the pins of the aseplate, the latter and the closing-platetogether forming a jaw for clamping the blade. Fig. 4 is .a side-view of the blade on an enlarged scale.
The base-plate a is provided with pins e and f projecting in the same direction as the stem 9 on which the holder (1 is screwed. The closing-plate b has such a shape, that when placed on the base-plate it covers the latter, while the pins e and f of the baseplate protrude through the co-incident holes 2' and y in the closing plate. The blade'c, preferably sharpened by grinding it ofi at one side in the manner of a chisel, is so placed on the base-plate that its rear edge abuts against the ms f; and the holder d when secrewed on t e stem g exerts a clamping action on the blade, the closing-plate and the base-plate, the blade being clamped between the front-edges of the base-plate and the closing-plate and secured tightly in .an oblique direction with regard to the plane of the base-plate.
The closing-plate is provided with teeth SAFETY-RAZOR.

direction, while the row of teeth is adjoined atlboth ends by the broader teeth is. These teeth k cover the ends of the blade so that the sharp corner of the blade cannot injure the skin. Besides this the blades are not bound to an exact length so that precisionwork is not necessary.
The described construction of the apparatus whereby the very narrow blade is secured at the front-edges of the jaw, and further the combination of very broad corner-teeth with the'blade in contact (up to the edge) with the row of teeth disposed in asidewise inclined direction render it .possible to use very cheap blades without causing any detriment to the razor.
When using the known safety-razor, the.
instrument must be entirely detached in its constituents, in order to remove the blade and clean it. For detaching the blade from the instrument according to the invention, it suflices to give the holder one loosening turn, the blade will then fall out of the instrument and can be cleaned or thrown away as the cost of the blade is very low.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a safety razor, the combination of a base-plate and a closer-plate, constituting companion elements, the base-plate having a stem for which the closer-plate has an.
opening, a holder threaded on the stem to hold the closer-plate against the base-plate and to cause said plates to function as a clamping jaw, one of said plates havin a pair of pins projecting toward the ot er plate and the latter having openings for sald pins, and a narrow blade adapted to be clamped by said plates between the front edges thereof and with its rear edge to abut said pins, said blade being disposed wholly at one side of said stem and being freely movable from between said plates when the holder is turned to relieve the clamping pressure of said lates.
Intestimony w ereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing.
witnesses.
