To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, ALBERT KRA TH, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Hamilton, in the countyrofButler and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Music-Stands, of which the following specification is a full disclosure.
' My inventionq'elates to folding music racks or stands and refers particularly to improvements upon a device of the character as disclosed in a prior patent issued to me January :25, 1898, numbered 597,722;
Folding racks as made in accordance with said prior patent and as illustrated in Fig. 3 iof'the drawing hereof, have aceiiter strip provided with a pair of ledge strips at its base or lower portion. These ledge strips at their inner endsare pivoted to the center strip, adapting them to swing from the folded position parallel with the center strip to a position at right angles to the center strip. A brace strip composed-of two sections of equal length pivotally united, are pivotally connected at one, end to the top of the center strip, with the opposite end pivotally connected. with the outer 01- free end of one of the ledge-strips. A pair of rest strips intersecting and pivoted together near the outer ends, respectively, have their inner ends pivoted to separatesections of the brace strip and relatively. upon opposite sides ofthe brace strip, Each rest strip measures equal to the other between the pivot intersectingly connecting the rest'strips and the pivot connecting themvto' a section'of the brace strip. Each rest strip, correspondingly connects to its brace strip section at the same distance when measured from the axis joins ing the sections of thebrace strip or when measuring from .the axis connecting the brace strip-to the center strip for one rest strip and the brace strip connection to the ledge strip for the other rest strip.
Such connections of the rest strip to the sections of the brace strip coincide and aline one over the other when the rack is folded; This coordination permits the parts to be swung into disarrangement,a form of disarrangement being shown at theright side of Fig. 3. This has the phase of a puzzle diliicult for many users to solve, causing in convenience, and in some instances a return of the rack to the dealer or manufacturer.
An object of my invention is to provide a rack of the type as disclosed in said prior patent, in which such unfolding disarrangement of theparts is impossible andwherein rack, illustrating the same in unfolded or open position. p I

The connect ing ends of said bracestrip links move'inwardly to the centeristrip, when foldinglhe rack, bringing the links parallelto each other and to the center and ledge strips with which they connect respectively.
A pair of rest strips ,9, 10, are provided intersecting and pivotally united at 11, near their outer ends, and their inner ends are pivoted to the separate links or sections forming the brace strip, strip 9 connects at 12 to. link 4 and strip 10 connects'at 13 to other with the ledge piece to their common or juncture axis, which is necessary to enable the members to move to a parallel position. The strips 9, 10, relatively are of unequal length as between their common axis intersectingly joining the same, and the axis of each connecting thestrip respectively to separate links of the brace strip. Thus, the distance between the axis 11 of strip 9 andthe axis 12, in the construction shown in Fig. 1, is greater than that of its companion strip 10 between its corresponding axes. Referring to Fig. 1', it will be seen that the distance between the pivot points 13and 6 is greater than that between pivot points 6 and 12 by the same amount that the dis tance in strip 9 between pivot points 11 and 12 is greater than that on the strip 10 be tween pivot points 11 and 13. g
Also, the rest strips fulcrum connections with the brace strip are relatively located at different distances between the link fulcrums, so that in swinging the 'parts into their folding parallel position the various 'axes cannot be brought coaxially or into alinement. This prevents the rest strips, when the rack is folded, from swinging in longitudinal registry about their brace strip axes, or a likewise coordinate motion of the brace strips when their end axes are coaxial, for any movement eitherto right or left of their axial diametrical alinement, will transmit a link parting or separating motion one to the other at different angular velocity, so that the parts cannot-be swung to a disarranged position "diflicult to correct, and which inthe form shown insaid prior patent and here illustrated in Fig. 3 was due primarily to the user attempting to unfold the rack by grasping the rest strips and pulling them outwardly away from the center strip, instead of drawing the ledge strip outwardly, which will carry the brace and rest links or strips to a proper unfolded positi'on. I V V In Fig. 2,.the rest strips are shown in an alternate arrangement frOmthat of Fig. 1, as concerns the length between their fulcrums to break any parallel or unitary mo tion between two or more of the parts and thereby limit the motion of the parts to and from their folding and unfolding positions. In Fig. 3 I have illustrated a rack in which the distance between fulcrum points of the various relative or companion members of the combination are equal, with one wing of the rack in a disarranged position, with the rest strip extending in an opposite direction from that which it should normally occupy when the rack is unfolded. To correct it, it offers quite a puzzle to anyone unskilled in solving and in which care must be taken to avoid bending or distortin the parts.

In a device of the class described, a center strip, a ledge-strip having one end pivotally connected to the base of the center strip to move from a position parallel with said center strip to a position at right angles thereto, a brace strip pivoted at one end to the upper portion of the center strip and at its other end to the outer end of the ledge strip, and comprising two members pivotally united, and a pair-of rest strips pivotally intersectingly united toward one end, and their oppositeends pivoted each to respective members of the brace strip, said rest strips being of different lengths measured between their common and brace strip axes. 2. In a device of the class described, a center. strip, a ledge-strip having one end pivotally connected'to the base of the center strip to move from a position parallel with said center strip to a position at right angles thereto, a brace strip )ivoted at one endto the upper portion of the center strip and its other end to the outer end of the ledge strip, and comprising two members pivotally united, and a pair of rest strips pivotally intersectingly united toward oneend, and their opposite ends pivoted each to respective members of the brace strip, said rest strips being of different lengths measured between their common and brace strip-axes, and connected to their brace strip membe's respectively at points which do not register when the brace strip is folded.
