Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY L. FEAsnL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mops and VVringers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combined mop and wringer. V
The object of my invention is a device of this character which is simple in operation and construction and inexpensive to manufacture, and which will expel the excess moisture from the mop without twisting the same, and thereby avoid placing undue strain upon any part of the mop. This results in greater life and consequently more efiicient service of the mop.
The present invention is an improvement upon my application, Serial No. 89,655, filed July 13, 1915.
My invention will be better understood by reading and considering the following specification taken in connection with'the accom panying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which Figure l is a side view of the device when ready for mopping;
Fig. 2 is a side view of the device in the wringing position;
Fig. 3 is a similar view after the mop is wrung and partially unwound;
Fig.4 is a perspective view of the frame of the device without the mop.
Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views of the catch device; and v Fig. 7 is a detail of the pivotal joint of the wringer frame to the mop frame.
The device consists of a frame 1 having a general U shape, comprising side members 2 and 3. Journaled in the openend of the frame 1 is a mop-holding member 4%. This member a is provided with a handle 5 for the purpose of rotating the member 4 with the mop thereon for the purpose of wringing the same, as will be described later. The member 4 has an opening (3 extending substantially the entire length thereof. A gap 7 is produced in one side of this opening 6 leaving the projections. 8 and 9' as clearly shown in Fig. 4:. The object of this,
is to facilitate the ready application to, and
removal of the mop from, the member 4-.
This may be done by passing one side of the mop through the gap 7 into the opening 6 and then the other side into the other end of the opening 6.
Pivoted to the sides 2 and 3 of the frame '1, is a wringer frame 10 of the same general the wringer frame 10 is moved around its pivots 1e and 15, the roller 11 will be brought into proximity to the mop 16 which is carried by the member 4:- When the wringer frame 10 is in this position, it will be seen that all the corresponding parts of the wringer frame 10 and the mop frame 1 are parallel and are relatively close together.
In order that the device may accommodate mops of different sizes the roller 11 may be adjusted in the frame 10 as by placing it in the difierent holes 29 and 30. It is changed by springing the ends 12 and 13 outward. My invention is not limited to this specific arrangement.
Mounted on the side frame 3 of the mop frame is a catch 17 This catch, as will be seen, has a projection 18 on the bottom and a corresponding projection 19 on top. The
projection 19 is cut away at 20 for the purthe projections 22 and 23, at such a distance apart as to accommodate the handle 5, as
hereinafter explained. The catch also provided with a handle 2e for the convenj ient operation of the same.
The preferred construction of the pivotal points 14: and 15 is shown'in Fig. 7. It will be seen that the side 12 of the wringer frame 7 10 is punched outward to form the projection 15 which constitutes the pivotal point of the side 12. Themember 3 has an opening therein to accommodate this point. The
same construction is present in thepivotal point 1 on the other side of the device. It is to be understood, however, that'any-suitable construction may be used for this purpose, such, for instance, as a rivet. The device is provided with a suitable ferrule 25 in which may be placed a handle 26.
The operation of the device is as follows:
When it is desired to use the mop in mopping, it will be in the condition shown in Fig. 1that is, the handle 5 will be moved alongside of the side frame member 3, and the wringer frame 10 will be moved down so as to bring this frame in line with the frame 1. At this time the catch 17 is pushed to the right, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, or toward the reader, as shown in Fig. A, in which position the projections 18 and 19 lock the frame 10 against movement in either direction. This operation will be apparent. It is noted in Fig. 4: that the portion 27 will be substantially parallel with the corresponding part of the side 3 so that when the catch is moved to the locking position, the part 27 will be confined between the projections 18 and 19. This is made possible by making the slope of the part 28, and
corresponding part on which the catch 17 is mounted, of the frame 1, a little greater than the slope of the portions 27 and 29 of the frame 10. This permits the movement of the portion 27 past the projection 19 when it is in the position shown in Fig. A, by reason of the cut-away portion 20. This movement, however, is limited in this direction by the projection 18 against which the portion 27 strikes when the center line of the roller 11 is in the plane passing through the pivotal points 14 and 15 of the frame 10 and the journals of the mop holding member 4. At this time the handle 5 is caught between the projections 22 and 23 and is held in this position. It will be seen, therefore, that when the portion 27 of the frame 10 is within the projections 18 and 19, and the catch has been moved into locking position, the handle will also be locked, and the device is, for all intents and purposes, an ordinary mop which may be used with all the convenience attendant upon such a structure.
When it becomes desirable to wring out the mop, this is done by moving the catch 17 to the position shown in Fig. 4: which releases the handle 5. When the handle 5 is turned in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 2, the mop 16 is rolled around the member 14 coming in contact with the roller 11. The movement of the mop tends to further move the roller 11 around the pivots 14 and 15, but this movement is prevented by the projection 18. Consequently, a pressure is created between the mop 16 and the roller 11, and as the handle 5 is further revolved, the excess liquid is squeezed out of the mop.
After the mop has been wrung, the direction of the movement of the handle 5 is reversed and the cut-away portion 20 of the projection 19 permits of automatic move ment of the roller 11 around its pivot into the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4-. The mop can then be unwound tothe position shown in Fig. 1, at which time the frame 10 and handle 5 may be locked inposition by means of the catch 17 and the device used again as a mop.
In some instances it may be desirable that the journals of the roller 11 remain at all times below the plane passing through the pivotal points 14 and 15 and the journals of the member 4, in order that the roller 11 will more quickly and easily remove automatically from the wringing position. This can be accomplished in numerous ways, one of which will be to place the journals of the roller 11 slightly out of line with the pivotal points 14 and 15, as shown at 29 in Fig. f. This, however, is not at all necessary to the satisfactory operation of the device.
From the above it will be seen that I have provided a device which is extremely simple in construction and operation, and one in which the wringing of the mop is accomplished without any undue strain being placed upon the strands of the mop, as well as a device which may be cheaply manufactured, and which will be durable in service.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a combined mop and wringer, the combination of a frame, a handle attached thereto, a mop-holding member rotatably mounted in said frame, a handle for rotating said member, a member pivoted on said frame, a roller mounted in said pivoted member and adapted to be moved into a fixed position against a mop on said mopholding member to wring the mop and means limiting the movement of said roller to the wringing position.
2. In a combined mop and wringer, the combination of a frame, a mop holding member rotatably mounted in said frame, means for rotating said member, a member pivoted to said frame, a roller mounted in said pivoted member and adapted to be moved into a fixed position against a mop on said mop holding member and means for limiting the movement of said roller in one direction to a plane passing through the pivotal points of the pivoted member and the axis of said mop holding member.
3. In a combined mop and wringer, the combination of a frame, a mop-holding member rotatably mounted in said frame, means on one end of said member for rotating it, a member pivoted on said frame, a wringer roller carried by said pivoted mem her and means whereby said roller may be brought into and held at a fixed position against a mop on said mop-holding member to wring the same and automatically removed therefrom on unwinding said mop from said member.
4. In a combined mop and wringer, the combination of a frame, a mop -holding member rotatably mounted in said frame, a
handle for said member, a roller pivoted in said frame and adapted to be moved into proximity to a mop on said member and means for holding it in said position during the wringing of said mop and permitting it to return automatically away from said mop when the direction of rotation of said mop is reversed.
5. In a combined mop and wringer, the combination of a mop frame, a mop-holding member rotatably mounted in .said mop frame, a handle for rotating said member, a wringer frame pivoted to said mop frame, a roller mounted in said wringer frame and means when in one position limiting the movement of said roller around its pivotal point to a point not exceeding a plane through said pivotal points and the axis of said mop-engaging member and in another position locking said wringer frame against movement around its pivotal points and in the same position locking in position the handle for rotating the mop-holding member.
6. In a combined mop and wringer, the combination of a U-shaped mop frame, a mop-holding member rotatably mounted in the open end thereof, means for rotating said member and a mop thereon to wring the same, a U shaped wringer frame pivoted to the sides of said mop frame, a roller mounted in the open ends of said wringer frame and adapted when said frames are in substantially the same plane to approach a mop on said mop-holding member to wring the same and means for limiting the movement of said roller to the wringing position.
7 In a combined mop and wringer, the combination of a mop frame having a general U shape, a mop-holding member rotatably mounted in the open end thereof, a wringer frame of the same general shape as the mop frame and pivoted to the sides thereof, a roller mounted in the open end of said wringer frame so that when said wringer frame is in wringing position all corresponding parts are parallel and substantially in the same plane and means slidably mounted in said mop frame which, in one position, limits the movement of the wringer in its wringing position and locks said wringer frame against movement in either direction during the mopping operation. 8. In a combined mop and wringer, the combination of a mop frame'having a general U shape, a mop-holding member rotatably mounted in the open end thereof, a handle for rotatingsaid member to wring a mop thereon, a wringer frame of the same general shape as the mop frame and pivoted all corresponding parts are substantially parallel and in the same plane and means slidably mounted on said mop frame adapted, when in one position, to limit the movement of said wringer frame in the wringing direction while permitting the free movement of said handle to wring the mop, and when in another position, to lock said wringer frame and handle against move ment in either direction.
9. In a combined mop and wringer, the combination of a mop frame, a mop-holding member rotatably mounted therein, a wringer frame pivoted to said mop frame, a roller mounted in said wringer frame and adapted to be adjusted in said wringer frame to various fixed positions to wring mops of difierent sizes.
10. In a combined mop and wringer, the combination of a mop frame, a mop-holding member rotatably mounted therein, means for rotatin said member and a mop thereon, a wringer rame pivoted to said mop frame, a roller mounted in said wringer frame and adapted to be brought into contact with a mop on said mop-holding member to wring the same and means for adjusting the roller in the wringer frame to a plurality of fixed positions to wring mops of different sizes.
11. In a combined mop and wringer, the combination of a mop frame, a mop-holding member rotatably mounted therein, means for rotating said member and mop thereon, a wringer frame pivoted to said mop frame, a roller carried by said wringer frame and a plurality of hearings in said wringer frame whereby said roller may be mounted at varying distances from a mop on said mop-holding member to wring mops of different sizes. 7 i
12. In a combined mop and wringer, the combination of a mop frame, a mop-holding member rotatably mounted therein, means for rotating said member and a mop thereon, a roller carried by said frame and a plurality of bearings for said roller at varying distances from said mop-holding member to wring mops of different sizes.
13. An improved mop and wringer comprising a carrier, a mop engaging member rotatively mounted therein, a squeezing member cooperatingwith said mop engaging member and means for holding said squeezing member at various fixed distances with respecttosaid mop engaging member.
