Application filed May 18,
To. all whom it' may concern:
Be it known that 1, Mannino lllnninma subject of the-'Kingofwlltaly, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe fand 5 State of New York, have invented certa-in new and useful Improvements in Mop Heads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the ae- 10 companying drawings, forming al part of this specification and to the reference numerals marked thereon.
My present invention relates to brushing and scrubbing and more particularly to floor mops and analogous devices and it has for its object to provide a strong and efficient mop head that will be convenient to manipulate while inserting or removing a mop, and which. will be clean and durable in use. To these and other ends the invention resides in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specication.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front view of a mop head constructed in accordance with and illustrating one embodiment of my invention with a mop in place therein.
Figure 2 is a side view thereof and Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view with the mop head partly broken away.
Similar reference numerals throughout the several views indicate the same parts.
Although not necessarily made it is an object of my invention to produce a mop head that may be produced at low cost by stampn ing it from sheet material and in the present embodiment of my invention l have illustrated a. mop head so made. VIt embodies a body portion 1 of a general T-shape and having an elongated transverse slot or opening 2 in the head portion 3 thereof which latter furnishes a wide continuous edge a Vat the end for pressure against the floor or other surface upon which the mop is used. At the base of the body portion 1 the sheet material is cinled into tubular form to constitute a socket 5 in which the shaft or handle 6 is fixed.
At each side of the head portion 3, ears 7 are struck up and provided with bea-ring openings 8 for the reception of pivot lugs or trunnions 9 on a clamping jaw 10. This clamping aw may have somewhat the gen- 1923. Serial No. 6382959.
eral shape of the head 3 and body portion 1 being, in the present instance, triangular with an opening 11 in the center and a handle portion 12 proceeding longitudinally ofv the body 1 and normally lying parallel to and practically against the same.
The trunnions 9 are preferably in the plane of the aw member 10 and proceeding downwardly and thence rearwardly from the edge of the latter in the vicinity of the trunnion is a clamping lip 13 running transversely of the head portion 3 to present a long, narrow dripping surface spaced slightly from the head 3.
In use, the rope or other niop material 1-1- doubled over or wound about the head portion 3 by being passed through the slot 2 as clearly shown in the figures, whereby the edge 4 lies between two layers of the mop and can be used in either direction to press the mop against the floor in swinging it about the ears 7 being angled or cut back as indicated at 15 to permit this. After the mop has been so inserted in the head and previously thereto, the handle 12 of the jaw 10 occupies an outward position to which it is swung on the pivots 9 to carry the lip 13 away from the head 3. To secure the mop the handle 12 is swung back to its parallel position pressing the lip 13 which then swings inwardly again against the material of the mop pinching it against the lined member. The handle 12 is then caught beneath a suitable turn button 16 in the present form of a. met-al hook pivotally riveted at 17 in the body 1 and movable' from the operative full line position to the dotted line position of Figure 1.
A mop head constructed in accordance with my invention particularly when made of sheet metal is very simple, being made of few parts readily assembled.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a mop head, the combination with a body portion having a head provided with a transverse slot and with lateral ears, of a clamping jaw spanning the head adjacent to the slot and having a pivotal bearing in the ears, said jaw being provided with a handle whereby it may be swung into and out of clamping engagement with a mop passed through the slot, and means on the body portion for latching the handle against the latter to hold the aw in clamping position.
2. In a mop head, the combination with CJI llO
a body portion having a head provided with a transverse slot and with lateral ears, of a clamping jaw spanning the head adjacent to the slot'and having a pivotal bearing in the ears, said jaw being provided with a handle whereby it may be swung into and out of clamping engagement with a mop passed through the slot, and means on the body portion for latohing the handle against the latter to hold the j aw in clamping position, said means embodying a laterally swinging hook pivot-ed in the body portion.
3. In a mop head the combination with a. body portion having a head provided with a transverse slot and with lateral ears', of aV clamping jaw spanning the head and embodying a sheet metal plate provided with trunnion lugs having pivotal bearings in the ears and'having a downwardly andthence rearwardly turned flange constituting a clamping surface adapted to pinch a inop againstthe head at the edge of Ythe slot said jaw being also provided with a handle movable to a clamping position against the body portion, and a latch on the latter for retaining the handle in such position.
