Application mea Januafryv, isis: seriai No. 210,760.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, HOMER L. BARRETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cyril, in the county of Caddo, State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knee-Protectors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to knee rotectors for the articular use of cotton plckers.
The o ject of Ithe invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive knee protector or pad. Also, aside from its inexpensive structure it is the intention to rovide such a ad which is strong and dura le, and may rthermore be worn without discomfort to the wearer when standing or walking.
With the above obJects in view, and such others relating to the details of construction,
` as may hereinafter appear, m invention will now be fully set forth and described,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings 4 .Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device,
Fi 2 S 8. plan View thereof with th@ padding removed,
Fig. 3 is a plan view with a knee supporting plate removed, and
Fi i is a longitudinal section.
Re erring more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents the base of a casing, said base 1 being part of the blank from which there are also shaped the sides 2, a front end wall 3 and a rear wall 4. The sides 2 and the end walls 3 and 4 form an inclosure for a plate 5 which lies horizontally therein So as to be capable of a certain amount of vertical motion. The plate 5 is supported by a plurality of coil springs 6 which rise vertically from the bottom 1, to which they are attached in any desired manner, as by clips 7.
In inclosing the plate 5, the sides 2 rise above said plate a sufficient distance to embrace the sides of the wearers knee, and also to carry at their rear corners the fastening straps 8 which are secured in suitable apertures 9. The end wall 3 extends above the upper'limits of the sides 2, so as to act as a guard for the knee, and a flexible extension 10 preferably, of leather, is riveted to the end wall or guard 8 to protect the wearers leg just above the knee, and the flexible extension 10 is provided with the straps 11 which constitute the necessary fastening means for securing the protector to the wearers leg. The rear wall 4 is of less height than the springs 6, so that when the springs 6 are compressed, the free edge of t e wall l will not appear above the top of the plate 5 and come into contact with the wearers leg. Also, in order to avoid an opening between the upper edge of the wall 4 and the rear end of the plate 5, a downturned flange 12 which rides inside of the end wall is carried by the plate 5, and prevents any rearward movement of the latter.`
AIn order to further secure the plate in position, a pluralit of clips 13 depending from the body of tile plate are clipped around the upper ends of the springs 6, thereby {ixing the relative positions of the plate and springs.
The middle of the body of the plate 5 is provided with a suitable dished portion 14 within which the knee cap lits, and furthermore, a cushioning layer of felt or other suitable fabric is mounted on the plate 5 in order to further increase the comfort of the protector.
The device is used in an obvious manner, and it will be apparent from the foregoing that it is a structure which maybe turned out at a minimum cost both for material and labor. The device may be one without discomfort to the user when he assumes a standing position.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A knee protector, consisting of a casing having a base, side walls, a front end wall rising above the upper edges of the side walls and a rear end wall of less vertical extent than the side walls, a plurality of springs mounted upon the base of the casing, a plate inclosed within the walls of the casing and carried by said springs, and means for securing the casing to a wearers leg with the plate overlying the knee.
2. A knee protector, consisting of a casing having a base, side walls, a front end wall rising above the upper edges of the Side walls and a rear end'wall of less vertical extent than the Sxdc wallsJ a plurahty of casing und carried by said springs, and means for Securing the easing to ".1, werels leg with the plato overlying the kne, said plate having :x knee conforming depression Cop'eswofthls pat-ent may be'- o`btained-`fdf re'bents c, by addessing Washington, D, (1.2v4
