Description
JOHN M. MOTT.
Improvement in Lightning-Rods.
No.127,094. PatentedMay21,1872.
AM. PHOVU-LIU/OGRAPHIU CD. N. X (OSEORIVES PROCESS) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IM PROVEMENT IN LIGHTNING-RODS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,094, dated May 21, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. MOTT, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State oflllinois, have invented anew and valuableImprovementin Li ghtnin g-Rods 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of an end view or cross-section of the rod before it is twisted. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the rod after it has been twisted together and completed. Fig. 3 is a side view of the twisted rod.
My invention has relation to lightning-rods 5 and consists in constructing such rods with wires of galvanized iron and a central plate of copper and twisting the same together, as
hereinafter specified and claimed.
A of the drawing represents a plate of copper, which constitutes what I denominate the central plate of mylightning-rod; and the let ters C represent wires or" galvanized iron.
In constructing my lightning-rod I place the wires C on each side of the plate, as shown on Fig. 1, and then twist them all together. WVhen this is accomplished it assumes the form shown on Fig. 3.
I am aware that lightning-rods have heretofore been constructed by L. J. Hawley, and mentioned in his patent of February 2, 1866, with a central plate of copper supported between solid semi-cylindrical bars of iron; and I therefore lay no claim to such invention; but
What I claim as my invention is- The lightning rod herein described, constructed with central copper plate A and galvanized wire 0 twisted together, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN M. MOTT.
Witnesses:
O. S. Morr, J. A. LAMBERT.
