TELEGRAPH-POLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 494,710, dated April 4, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, J AMEs WOOD CARVER and CHESTER EDWARD CARVER, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Pawlet, in the county of Rutland and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Posts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in posts, designed for use in the construction of fences, telegraph, telephone poles, hitching posts and the like, and it has for its objects among others to provide a post that will be as light as wood and much more durable, cheaply made and capable of withstanding all the strain that will ever be required of it. It is constructed of sheet metal and is tapered from end to end. :0 Near its upper end it is provided with notches for the reception of the cross piece to which the wires are secured, when used as a telegraph or telephone pole.

Other objects and advantages of the in- 2 5 vention will hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claim.

The invention in the present instance resides in the peculiar construction of the post, 0 as will be more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings and then particularly pointed out in the claim, being clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved post shown as designed for a telegraph pole. Fig. 2 is a cross section thereof.

ings by letter, A designates the post, which is formed of two like parts tapered from end to end and bent or crimped at their longitudinal center as seen at a and the two parts united at their angles in any suitable manner as by rivets B. The two parts are formed of sheet metal, stamped out and crimped, the two when united having the cross section substantially like a Greek cross as seen in Fig. 5c 2; this forms a very strong post of light material, easily erected, and one not liable to be broken or injured by winds or storms. WVhen used as a telegraph pole it is provided at the proper point or points with notches c in one or two adjacent wings of the post as seen in Fig. 1 into which notches are designed to be secured the cross bars C to which the wires are to be secured. These notches are wedgeshaped so as to hold the cross bars without other means.

The post is further provided with foot bars D, serving as a ladder.

\Vhat is claimed as new is A post consisting of two sections, each section tapering from top to bottom having a central rib abutting and secured together and making a double thickness at the center, and having wings extending outward from the central portion, one of the wings having a dovetailed notch, a shaped cross bar snugly fitting in said notch and carrying insulators, and rods connecting two of the wings and forming a ladder.
