Description
J. H. SOHOONMAKER. Lightning Rod.
(No Model.)
No. 243,630. Patented June 28,1881.
ATTORNEYS I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. SOHOONMAKER, OF \VINONA, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR OF FOUR- FIFTHS TO H. D. MORSE AND N. O. GAULT, OF SAME PLACE.
LIGHTNING-ROD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,630, dated June 28, 1881. Application filed April 30, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. H. SOHOONMAKER, a citizen of the United States, resident of Winona, in the county of Winona and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Lightning-Rods,- and I do hereby declare that thefollowin g is a full clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to 10 the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation ofa cross-section of the rod. Fig. 2 is a side view.
This invention relates to improvements in lightning-rods.
The invention consists of a rod made up of tubes arranged as hereinafter set forth, and
particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the annexed drawings, A is a central straight tube, about which are wound spirally the smaller tubes B, close together. All of these tubes consist of a hollow zinc wire, (1,
covered with sheet-copper D. These are the best metals, but either the wire or may be made of any metal.
covering By this construction a rod is formed of great strength and durability, having good conductivity, and of cheaper cost than ordinary.
Hollow copper wires placed around a straight hollow copper core is not new. A solid central iron core having an encircling copper sheath and solid twisted encircling wires is also old; and a lightning-rod made of an in 5 terior and an exterior copper shell and pro vided with a flat zinc core is also old. Neither of these constructions are claimed hereinafter.
I claim- In a lightning-rod, the combination, with a 40 straight hollow zinc core covered with sheet copper, of a series of twisted encircling tubes of zinc covered with sheet-copper, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have 5 hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES H. SOHOONMAKER.
