Specification of Letterslatent.
atente We 2 19 Application filed June 9, 1917. Serial No. 173,696;
it all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN TERLECKY, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, resident of East-on, county of Northampton, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in FigurelVheeled Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in toys, and particularly to those in which moving figures-are actuated by the operation of a truck upon which they are secured.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a form of amusementfor children,
the toy being operable along any relativelylevel surface and having movable parts, sim ulative of soldiers, which, are caused to move in a novel manner by the actuation of the truck.
A further object is to provide such toys which may be cheaply constructed, and are durable in their nature. These and other like objects are attained by the novel design, construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shownin the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure l is a side elevational view of a toy made in accordance with the invention, the positions of the moving figure being indicated by the full and broken lines.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the center line of the same.
Fig. 3 is a similar sectional view, the parts being shown in another position, and
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
In the drawings, a hollow rectangular casing 10, is seen to be mounted upon shafts 11, extending through the sides and engaged with which are the front and rear Wheels, respectively 12 and 13, thereby providing means by which the toy may be moved over any level surface.
Guided between the side walls of the truck 10 and closely adjacent to the upper wall 15, is a sliding block 16, the same being held in operative position by the fixed, transverse bars 17 and 18, the sliding block 16 containing a longitudinal slot 20, and is held normally forward by means of an elasti cord 21, as a rubber band or the like, the same passing through openings 22 formed in the front end 23 of the sliding block 16 hashing transversely through the elongated of the shaft extending through and having fixed upon it a disk 35, adapted to engage with the periphery of one of the frontwhe 'els 12 in such manner as to be frictionally driven thereby. j
Thus as the truck is-advanced in a forward direction, the slide 16' is rnovedrean Wardlyby an irregular movement transmitted through contact of the arrns 28,29 and 30, with the pins 25, 26; and 27, until the arm 28 has passed the pin 25, whereupon the sliding block 16 forced forward under the pull of the cord or elastic element 21.
Attached upon the outer surface of the cover 15 is a tube 38, having a right angular extension 39, in which is a slidable plunger 46, normally pulled forward by means ofan elastic element 42, attached near the outer end of the tubular arrn39, and in which is inserted a cork 44-, adapted to be violently expelled when the plunger 40 is released and pulled sharply forward. l l i This plunger is withdrawn by means of a cord 45, extending through the passages in the arm 39 and tube 38, and having its opposite end attached to the sliding block 16 so as to be actuated thereby.
Pivotally mounted upon a pin 48, passing through the sides of the truck 10, near the rear end, is a shank 49 having a curved camlike surface 50, against which the sliding block 16 is adapted to contact when it is advanced by the arms 28, 29 and 30, so as to cause the figure 52 to rise from a horizontal to an upright position, as shown in the dotted lines in Fig. 1, the shank 49 extending through an opening 53, when in a horizontal position, and when raised upright, through the opening 54 formed in the cover plate 15.
Thus through the irregular disposition of the pins, as operated by the arms, the figure is caused to rise by successivestages into an upright position and then suddenly released 'Having thus described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is n I 1. The combination with a truck mountedvupon wheels, of a slotted block slidably arranged in Sid truck, means for normally maintaining said block in a forward position, a figure pivoted at the rear of said truck, said figure being operable by said bloek,; a shaft mounted transversely in said casing, a plurality of arms engaged with .block is movable rearwardly, and a friction wheel on said shaft engaged withrthe periphery of one of the wheels of said truck. A 2. In a toy, the combination with a hollow casing,.andwheels upon which said casing ismounted, of a figure representative of a soldier pivoted in said casing, said figure having a shank extending within the casing, a;blockslidably arranged in said casing, means for maintaining said block in a normally; forward position, said block having a. part contactable withthe shank of said figure, andmeans actuated by the wheels of said truck for moving said block in an irregular manner whereby said figure is raised by degrees to an upright position.
3. In ,a toy, the combination with a wheeled casing, a block slidably mounted therein, a figure pivoted in said casing, said figure having a shank extending inwardly to make contact with said block, means for actuating said block by an irregular motion, said means being operated through the wheels of the casing, a hollow arm mounted parallel to and above said casing, a plunger operable therein, and means combined with said sliding block for actuating said plunger.
4. In a toy of the class described, the combination with a hollow casing having wheels upon either side at each end thereof, a block oslidably arranged in said casing, said block having an open longitudinal slot, a plurality of pins passing transversely through said slot, means for holding said block in a normally forward position, a shaft mount ed transversely in said casing, arms adapted to engage with said pins, said arms being engaged upon said shaft, means on said shaft frictionally contactable with said driving wheels whereby said shaft may be rotated, a figure pivotally mounted in said casing, having a part engageable with said block, whereby said figure may be raised, a hollow arm parallel with said casing, a plunger slidably mounted therein, means for holding said plunger in a normally forward position, and means engaging between said plunger and said block whereby the former is withdrawn simultaneously with the raising of Said figure.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature.
JOHN TERLEGKY.
