Description

L. B. SMITH.
SKIRT MARKER.
APPLICATION FILED 0511.12. 1914.
A'IENT OFFICE.
LETHA B. SMITH, OF PORTLAND, OREGON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO TOM P. RANDALL, OF OREGON CITY, OREGON.
SKIRT-MARKER.
Application filed October 12, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LETHA B. SMITH, a citizen of the United States. residing in the city of Portland, county of Multnomah, and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirt-Markers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to skirt markers, and more particularly to certain improvements in skirt markers by means of which a person is able to mark her own skirt in one or more places while standing erect without the as sistance of another person, and also, by means of which two or more marks can be made at the same time at any desired loeations.
In the embodiment of the invention here shown for purposes of illustration, I have shown a device adapted to use powdered chalk or other marking medium which can be squirted from an adjustably mounted nozzle by means of a bulb and tube connection therewith. I accomplish the objects of my invention by providing a supporting standard and adjustably mounting the marking devices thereon so that they can be adjusted to various vertical. positions, as well as to and from the skirt, and extending the operating device to a suitable height for convenient manipulation.
In order that others may fully understand my invention, I have. shown in the accompanying sheet of drawings one practical embodiment thereof, which I will now describe.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device in operation, a skirt being outlined in broken lines; and
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail of a nozzle which may be used for marking the skirt.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 designates a base plate, preferably of metal, with a part 2 projecting upwardly therefrom as a guide and support for the skirt, which is placed over the same, as indicated. This may be slightly curved, as shown, to give it increased stiffness, as well as to Llacilitatc the passing of the skirt over the same as the wearer turns slowly on her feet. The base plate can be provided with holes, as 3, for securing the device to the floor, or to any other foundation desired. A tubular member 4 is mounted upon the base plate and provided with graduation marks, as 5. An extension post 6 is slidably and telescopi- Specification of Letters Patent.

ally mounted in the tubular post 41, which is jn'ovided with a set screw 7 for securing the post (3 at any desired height therein. Any number of telescoping sections can be employed, as is indicated at 6. Graduation marks are also provided on the telescoping sections, as at S, for setting them at the desired heights.
Powder nozzles are shown and designated 9. These terminate at their rear portions 10 to receive tubes, hereinafter referred to, and at their operating ends are tapered, as shown at 11, Fig. 2, for the purpose of producing a fine stream of the marking powder or other medium to be forced therethrough. Each nozzle is provided with a closure for its discharge end. which is here shown to be a hinged hook-like member 12, mounted on the pin 1; between the lugs 14:, and adapted to be held in open or closed positions by means of a Hat spring 15, mounted on the nozzle body. This spring operates to hold the stopper in the down or closing position, or in the open or raised position, by reason of its square base 18 against which the spring '15 yicldi'ngly restsf Each nozzle is provided with a clamp for attaching it to the post or standard 46, as desired, which clamp comprises a collar 19, having a set screw 20 to hold it in any adjusted position. and a split extension 21 adapted to receive the nozzle which is held in place by a clamping screw 22.
Any desired number of nozzles and clamps may be used upon the vertical standard, and these can be adjusted to any heights desired, as will be clearly seen from the illustration.
The nozzles are each connected, by means of tubes 23, with a main tube 24, which is attached. as by a screw thread at 25 to a powder carrying and blowing device 26, here shown to be of bulb form, although any other form of device might be used.
The operation of the device just described may be briefly stated as follows: Assuming that the nozzles have been adjusted to the desired heights at which the skirt is to be marked and that the skirt is placed over the guide plate 2. with the nozzles bearing slightly against the same, the person then turns around so as to cause the skirt to pass over the guide plate 2, at the same time manipulating the bulb 26 and causing the marking chalk to be discharged from the point of the nozzle and against the skirt, leaving the lines as indicated by the dotted lines 2828. I
I am aware that changes can be made in the invention as here illustrated and that different kinds of marking devices can be adjustably mounted and adapted to be manipulated by the wearer of the skirt while standing erect, and I do not, therefore, limit my invention to the particular showing here made, eXceptas I may be limited by the hereto appended claims.
I claim,
1. A skirt marker of the character shown and described, comprising a fiat supporting base plate adapted to rest flatwise upon the floor having anupstanding curved plate member over and against which the skirt moves, an adjustable curved plate supporting standard upon said base adjacent said upstanding member, one or more brackets adjustably mounted upon saidstandard, one or more nozzle ineinbers supported in said adjustable brackets and projecting to points adjacent said upstanding member, and an operating bulb and flexible tube connections to said nozzles adapted for forcing marking powder through said nozzles. a j
2. A skirt marker of the character shown and described, comprising a base adapted to rest flatwise upon the floor having an upstanding curved plate member over and against which a skirt can be moved, a sup porting standard mounted upon said base and composed of two graduated members adjustable relative to each other, one or more supporting brackets adjustably mounted upon said standard, one or more nozzle members adjustably supported in said brackets and projected toward said upstanding member, said nozzles having means for closing the discharge openings thereof, and a bulb with flexible tubular connections to said nozzles adapted to force marking powder through said nozzles, substantially as shown and described.
