To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Mnxron B. REACH, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicopee, Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Exercising Apparatus, (Marking Devices,) of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to exercising apparatus, and particularly to the form known as the vaulting bar or Swedish bar in which a boom or horizontal bar is carried by uprights adjustably, though it will be understood that my invention is not limited in this respect, but may be applied in other situations where one member is to be adjusted in relation to or upon another member and where markings or graduations are carried by or associated with the fixed member to show the different heights or the positions the adjustable member is to occupy.

In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a sectional view of an apparatus embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a front View of the upright or perforated post with the markings showing through the openings. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a section across the upright showing the marking device in its relation to the upright and showing also the coupling for connecting the cross-bar with the upright.

In the form of apparatus selected to illustrate my invention, 1 indicates upright posts or standards for supporting a cross bar or boom 2, the connection between the cross bar and the uprights being made by couplings 3 at the ends of the boom or cross bar, the said couplings carrying suitable devices for fastening the same at different heights along the upright, and including pins 4, one for each coupling, to enter openings in the uprights, said pins being preferably spring pressed and also associated preferably with certain clamping means 5, such, for instance, as that shown in application of Anthony Couture, executed April 3, 1912. In order to mark the uprights with gracluations, difficulty has heretofore been experienced, because if the figures or markings indicating the different heights are painted on the uprights they quickly run off, and if these markings are stamped in the uprights this is a costly operation, and a method which frequently distorts the tubing of which the uprights are made. In carrying out my invention, I employ a member carrying the markings, and applied to the interior of the tubing, this member being arranged opposite the perforations in the tubing, so that the markings will show through these openings. In its best form this member consists of a tape or like member (3 which is suspended within the upright at about one-half inch away from the openings which are about nine-sixteenths inch in diameter. The lower end of the tape is fastened by a spring 7 under tension. This tape is formed of material which will provide a light background, the markings or figures appearing thereon in black, and coming opposite the holes in the upright. It will be observed from this that the markings are carried entirely independent of the exterior surface of the uprights, leaving these surfaces free from stampings or marks painted on.

In manipulating the device to change the adjustment of the cross bar on the vertical standard 1, the handle 8 is turned, causing the screw 9 to move outwardly or toward the left in Fig. 3, and when a certain position of this screw is reached, pressure on the handle in a direction axially of the screw will, through the yoke 5, cause the pin 4 to move to the right out of the opening in the standard 1 and against the-pressure of the spring 10, and then by moving the cross bar and the bracket up or down on the standard 1 and bringing the pin 4 into alinement with the desired perforation and. releasing the pressure on the handle 8, the pin, under the tension of the spring 10, will enter this perforation, and then by turning the handle 8 and causing the screw 9 to act on the yoke 10, the said yoke will be drawn to the left and will be clamped against the exterior of the standard 1, thus securely holding the parts together.

I claim as my invention:

1. In an exercising apparatus, a tubular member having perforations, a second mem ber adjustable on the tubular member and having means for fixing the same thereto, and markings on the interior of the tubular member showing through the openings, substantially as described.
