To all whom it may concern: a
Be it known that-I, SYDNEY J. HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cord- Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the invention, such as will enable others skilled in'the artto which it appertains to make and use thesame.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved cord fastener or package tie; and, to this end, it consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout. the several views.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure 1 is a plan view of a package held together by a cord, the ends of WhICh are secured by the improved fastener;
Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a detail vieW in longitudinal section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the fas tener with the cord removed.
The numeral 5 indicates a package held together by a cord 6, the ends of which are secured by the improved fastener, which comprises a plate 7 and a spring wire 8. This spring wire 8 extends diagonally across the underside of the plate 7 and is secured thereto by lugs 9 integrally formed with said plate and rolled to form eyes through which said wire is inserted. Outward of the lugs 9, the end portions of the Wire 8 are reversely bent upon themselves to form primary hooks 10, the ends of which are reversely bent upon themselves to form secondary hooks 11. The hooks 10 and 11 extend in a plane that is parallel to the plate 7 and the loops of the primary hooks 10 ex tend slightly beyond the ends of said plate. At the junction of the primary and secondary hooks 11, the Wire 8 extends under and against the plate 7 to close the loops of said primary hooks, while the remaining portions of the secondary hooks 11 project outward of the edge of said plate.
In securing the end portions of the cord 6 to the fastener, the same areforeed lat- Specification of LettersZBatentQ Application filed September 13, 1917. Serial No.

erally. between the catching said end portions between the backs of the secondary hooks l1 and plate 7 and then drawing the end portions of the cord away from the fastener to cause the Wire to spring away from the plate 7, and thereby permit the cord to be drawn into the loop portions of the primary hooks 10. The loop portions of these primary hooks 10 press the cord 6 onto the edge of the plate 7 and thereby securely hold the same' against slippage. After the end portions of the cord 6. are inserted in the loops of the primary hooks 10, the same may be folded upon the intermediate portion of the cord and then pulled throu'ghsaid hooks to place the cord under strain. The end portions of the cord are then carried overthe upper face of the plate 7, under the secondary hooks 11 and into the V-shaped portions thereof to further hold the end portions of the cord, as
shown in Fig. 1.
From the above description, it is evident that by the use of the improved fastener a cord may be very quickly applied around the bundle and, at the same time, securely held thereby. It is also evident that a cord may be used a great many times, thus saving considerable expense. While the improved fastener is adapted for general use, it is especially adapted for mail carriers in tying up packages of letters, etc.
What I claim is:--
1. A cord fastener comprising a plate having at one side a hook extending in a plane substantially parallel thereto and adapted to be sprung laterally therefrom to permit a cord to be passed laterally between the plate and hook and to press said cord onto the plate and hold the same, said hook adapted to permit the cord to freely move therethrough under a drawing action on the cord to tighten the same.
2. A cord fastener comprising a plate having at one side a hook extending in a plane substantially parallel thereto with its loop portion projecting beyond the edge of the plate, said hook adapted to be sprung laterally from the plate to permit a cord to be passed laterally between the plate and hook, the loop portion of the hook adapted to receive and press the cord onto the edge of the plate, with freedom to move therethrough under a drawing action on the cord to tighten the same.
plate 7 and hooks by Y 3. A cord fastener-comprisinglagplate having at each end a primary hook and a seeondary hook, said hooks extending in a plane substantially parallelto the pl-aite and adapted to be sprung laterally therefrom to permit a cord to be passed laterally between the .;plate and hooks, said primary hooks adapted 'to receive and press same and said secondary hooks adapted to receive and turther hold the end portions off the cord held by the opposite secondary hooks, said primary hook adapted to permit "the "cord to move therethrough under a drawing action 'on the cord to tighten the same I 4. A-cordfastene'r comprising a plate. and a spring Wire secured to one :side thereof, each end of said wire being bent upon itself to dorm aaprimary hookand 'theend of each primary 'hook being bent upon itself to for-In Copies of this patent may be obtained for .fiwe ce'n-ts eaeh by addressing the the end per tions of the cord onto theplat-eandholdthe samba edge of th p aeanasia secondaryhooks adapted to receive and further hold theend portions of the cord held by'the 5.. Aeord fastener comprising a plate and a spring wire secured diagonally across one side thereof, he ends of said Wirebeing reversely bent upon themselves to form primary hooks andthegiends of said primary hooks being reversely bent upon themselves to form secondary. hooks, said hooks extend: ing-in ia plane substantially parallel to the plate with their loop portions lPI'Oj ecting be yond the edge thereot, said hooks adapted to be sprung laterall a cord to be passed laterally between the plate.- and hooks, said primary hooks adapted to receive and press, the end portionsof the cord -'onto the edge of the plate and said secondary hooks :adapted toreceive and further hold the end portions of the cord held by the. opposite .-primary :hooks- In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
