Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1%, 191a.
Application filed June 14, 1917. Serial No. 174,724..
Z'o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EWART M. BALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eagle Pass, in the county of Maverick, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutlery-Sharpeners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to cutlery eners.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be used for dressing down the edges of knives, preparatory to sharpening them upon an oil stone, or may be employed in the kitchen to rapidly condition kitchen knives. n
It is also an object to 'provide such a de vice which may be adjusted in order to form upon a blade an edge whose bevel may vary from a razor or feather to one having a sharp bevel.
With the above objects in view, and such others relating to the details of construction, as may hereinafter appear, my invention will now be fully set forth and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of the device,
Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing another stage of adjustment.
Fig. 3 is a rear view, and
Fig. 4 is a plan view.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, there is shown at 1 a base from whlch rises a cross-sectionally triangular blade 2, the side faces of which are abrasive. Associated with the body 01' blade 2 is a pair of guide bars 3, whose lower ends are plvoted to the front edge of the blade, as upon the studs 4, said guldes being adjustable toward and away from the blade 2, in order to va the angle with the latter. Vertically slidable upon the base 1 is an ad usting block 5, the latter extending horizontally across the blade and having sliding engagement with the guide bars 3. Thus, the block 5 is provided with a dove-tailed notch 6 which slidably engages the faces of the blade 2, and at its ends is provided with the guide loops sharp- 7 which receive the upper free ends of the bars 3. Extending through the block 5 in threaded and receives no In using the device which has been above 5 described, the bars 3 are primarily adjusted as above set forth to provide the proper sharpening bevel. Then, the knife is inserted on first one side and then the other of the blade 2, between the latter and the bars 3, and used with a suitable pressure downwardly so as to cramp the knife blade between the blade 2 and the corresponding guide bar'3, care being taken to cause the flat of the knife blade to lie against the bar 3', while the bevel is imparted to the cutting edge by the abrading action of the blade 2.
It will be apparent that I have provided a very simple and complete device for sharpening knives rapidly and uniformly. If it is desired merely to dress down blades as a permanent step in the sharpening thereof, the abrading surfaces of the blade 2 may not be so fine, but where the device is used as a household article for conditioning kitchen cutlery, the blade 2 may be provided with comparatively fine grinding surfaces which will immediately condition knife blades for use.
What I claim as my invention is A cutlery sharpening device comprlsmg a base, a sharpening blade mounted upon the base, said blade having a plurality of convergent abrasive faces, a pair of adjustable guide bars pivoted to and each standing at an angle to said blade and a horizontal block slidably mounted on the blade and connected to the bars, whereby vertical movement of the block upon the blade will vary the angle between the bars and the blade.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in the presence of a witness.
