Be it known that I, SIMEON G. EDMUNDs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bluestem, in the county of Lincoln and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sprin -Separators, of which the following is a-specification.
This invention relates to improvements in devices'for separating the leaves of springs in orderto insert lubricant, or for any other purpose.
Heretofore, devices of this character have required adjustable features of one kind or another, in order to adapt them for springs of different sizes or widths. Now it is one of the objects of this invention to provide a spring separator which will be applicable to springs of a widely varying range of size without requiring special means for adjustment.
Myinvention has other features of novelty which will be more fully described in connection with theaccompanying drawing and which will be more articularly pointed ed claim. In the drawings j Figure 1 isa plan view of a portion of an elliptical spring showing the device of my invention applied thereto.

As illustrated, 1 designates a portion of an elliptical spring in connection with which the device of my invention is shown applied for the purpose of spacing or separating certain of the leaves. The device of my invention comprises lovers 2 and 3 having separating ends 4: and 5 and actuating ends 6 and 7. Said levers are pivotally connected with each other, preferably by disposing the levers in crossed relation, the pivot being designated at the intersection thereof at 8. ll dispose the pivot nearer one end of the device than the other so that the actuating ends 6 and 7 will be of considerably increased length with respect to the separating ends thereby gaining in leverage to facilitate operation of the device.
The actuating ends 4 and 5 are bowed or spread in substantially hook-shaped form so meanin the them toward that they may be readily disposed astride of the springs to which they are to be applied. Preferably, each terminal of the separating ends is shaped to facilitate entrance under wedging action between the leaves of the spring and I desirably converge or taper the terminal ends in the plane of the same, as indicated at 9 and 10, and I have also shown the terminal wedge or entering ends tapered, as indicated at 11 and 12. Thus the terminal ends are substantially pointed thereby greatly facilitating their entrance between the leaves when stress is applied thereto. The pointed terminals serve to readily locate and hold the device, or rather the terminal ends thereof, in line with the spaces or abutting juncture of the leaves before stress is applied to the device, so that when stress is applied to the device the terminal ends will be in a correct position to enter between the leaves. It will thus be seen that the terminal end, or terminal ends, of the separating portions of the levers are wedge shaped irrespective of the fact that in this particular construction shown, they are also tapered to pointed ends.
The device of my invention would be operated comprising the means just described. As it would be possible to actuate the handle ends 6 and 7 by a hand, which would present construction, forcing each other in order to thrust the separating ends between the leaves of the spring. Furthermore, because of the fact that the separating ends are fiat, and by reason of the fact that the flat portions may be inserted between the leaves, the device would hold itself in a leaf separating position,
However, it would require handle portions 6 and 7 of considerable length in order to get the required leverage and I therefore equip the device with mechanism for actuating the handle ends, said mechanism also preferably being constructed to lock the handle ends when the device is in a leaf separating position.
As illustrated, the handle or actuating end 6, is provided with a recess or notch 13. The handle or actuating end 7 is bent to form an eye 14. A loop link 15 has one of its bights arranged for disposition or engagement with the notch 13 in such a manner that while it may be readily attached to the handle end 6, it may also be readily detached therefrom, the engagement being of a loose character. An angle lever, prefer ably formed-of wire, is provided with a loop 16, extending through the eye 14L, and
- dicated at 20 and has an eye 21 formed therein for connection with the loop link 15. Said angle lever has an operating end 22 for engagement by the user of the tool to force the handle ends 6 and 7 toward each other from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the position shown in Fig. 1. In the latter position, it'will be seen that'the eye 21 disposes the link 15 past a dead center with respect to eye 14, the abutting portion 18 engaging handle end 7 so that the device is in a dead center locked position. More than one notch '13 may be provided in the handle end 6 so that when'there is a considerable range of size of springs the link 15 may be adjusted so that the handle ends 6 and 7 will not be brought together so closely as they are in Fig. 1, for a relatively wide spring. However, there isno objection to the extent to which the separating ends are inserted and therefore with the device as it is now shown, adj ustability is entirely avoided and made unnecessary.

It is believed that the advantages and utility of my invention will be clearly understood from the foregoing description,
and while I have herein shown and dcsdribed one specific form of my invention, I do not wish to be limited thereto except for such limitations as the claim may import.
I claim A device for separating the leaves of springs, comprising in combination, levers having their spring separating ends and actuating ends, means pivotally connecting said levers between their ends, and mechanism for operating the actuating ends of said levers to effect separation of the leaves and then look said leaves in a leaf separating position, said mechanism comprising a link having one end detachably connected with one of said handle levers, a dead center bell crank lever having one end pivoted to the remaining handle lever and having one arm adapted-to lie flat against said handle lever to which it is pivoted when said bell crank lever is in a locking position, the remaining arm of said bell crank lever being pivoted to the remaining end of said link in a manner to dispose the bell crank lever and link in a dead center locking position when said handle levers are locked, said bell crank lever. having an extension projecting therefrom for manual operation, substantially as described.
