Description

P. JURGENS.
Velvet-Reels.
Patented May 21,1872.
Wtnwm: 5mm; V/w. M
I fag X PEDER JT IRGENS, OFST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
IMPROVEMENT IN VELVET-REELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,967, dated May 21, 1872.
Specification describing a new and Improved Velvet-Reel, invented by PEDER JiiReENs, of St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota. V
My invention consists of, a pair of oval or cylindrical blocks of wood and another block, of square or other form, between them, with a wide board attached to each end of the blocks, on which the velvet ribbon is wound by fastening one end to a pin projecting from the middle block by whirling the reel on a pivot at the lower side by a key in the upper side, the pin being so adjusted in the middle block that it will not penetrate the layers of the ribbon wound on, and the board which comes at the bottom when winding being protected at the corners against wear by contact with the counter, whereon it is whirled, by eyelets, nails, or other suitable armor.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved velvet-reel, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A and B are the two boards, of paper, wood, or other suitable substance, which are covered with paper, preferably white, on the inside of the boards, and blue on the outside. 0 and D are the oval or round blocks of wood on which the ribbon is to be wound, and E is the intermediateblock for holding the pin F, by which the end of the ribbon to be wound is secured, said pin being pointed toward one of' the round blocks, so that the end of the ribbon will be held better by drawing over the corner of the block than it would if drawing laterally for-a considerable distance from the pin; also, so that the ribbon will not be punctured in other parts as it is wound on. The boards are fastened to the ends of these blocks in ny approved way, and are to be as far apart as the width of the ribbon to be wound/between them. For ribbons of different widths reels of corresponding different widths will be made. At the center of the lower board is a pivot, G, to revolve the reel on, said pivot being placed on the counter, and at the top is a forked key, H, detachably applied in holes or otherwise for turning the reel by one hand-say the right-when the point of the pivots rests on the counter, and at the same time the ribbon will be held and guided by running through the fingers of the left hand.
I have represented the corners of the lower board protected with armor of eyelets or nails fitted in them to prevent injury thereto by contact with the counter, as may be necessary Witnesses MARSHALL SHERMAN, W. P. MURRAY.
