COLLAPSIBLE COT.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 18, 1918.
Application filed January 4, 1917. Serial N 0. 140,484.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER H. PETnR- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Cots, of which the following is a speclfication, reference being had to the accompanyin drawing, forming a part thereof.
This invention relates to collapsible or folding cots and the objects of the invention are to improve the construction of such cots in the manner to be hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings which accompany this specification and form a part hereof, on which drawings the same reference characters are used to designate the same parts wherever they may appear in each of the several views, and which drawings illustrate an embodiment of this invention, Figure 1 is a lengthwise elevation of the cot; Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the cot; Fig. 3 is an elevation of the legs of the cot and parts permanently connected therewith in their collapsed or folded positions; Figs. 4 and 5 are perspective views, on an enlarged scale, of details of construction; and Fig. 6 is an elevation of one of the side bars in collapsed or folded position.
Referring to the drawings the reference numerals 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 designate legs which are pivotally connected in pairs so that the legs of each pair can be collapsed or folded parallel with each other or unfolded to stand like the letter capital X. Each set of legs is connected with the next adjacent set of legs by braces on both sides of the cot. Only some of the braces are shown by the drawings and they are designated by the reference numerals 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16. The braces are all connected in pairs by pivots and the pivots which are shown by the drawings are designated by the reference numerals 17, 18, 19 and 20. 7 Each leg is provided with two hinge members on opposite sides thereof, one of which is located near the top of the leg and the other of which is located near the bottom of the leg. Only some of these hinge members are shown by the drawings and they are designated by the reference numerals 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29 and 30. The hinge members are pivotally connected or hinged to the legs by pivots or rivets which are designated on the drawings by the common reference character 31. These hinge members are preferably duplicates of each other to minimize the cost of production and their construction is clearly shown by Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings. The braces are connected with the hinge memhere by links which are pivoted both to the braces and to the hinge members. These links are designated on the drawings by the common reference numeral 32 and they are pivoted to the hinge members by the pivots 33 and to the braces by the pivots 34. Two braces are connected with each .end of each leg of the intermediate sets of legs and it is preferred to connect each two braces with a single link as clearly shown by the drawings.
The upper end of each leg is provided with a hook 36 which may be secured to the leg in any suitable manner, as, for example, by rivets 35 and the side bars 38 are rovided with staples 37 which are adapte to be engaged with the hooks 36.
The side bars 38 are made in sections which are connected with hinges 39 and are slipped into home 40 at the edges of the cover 41. The staples 37 project out through slits in the canvas cover as clearly shown by Fig. 2 of the drawings. It will be readily apparent from an inspection of the drawings that the cover 41 and side bars 38 can be removed from the legs and folded up and that the legs and braces can be readily collapsed or folded into the positions shown by Fig. 3 of the drawings so that the cot can be collapsed and folded into a comparatively small package for transportation or stora e.
The links 32 which connect the braces with the hinge members secured to the legs permit movement of any brace on one side of the cot to be communicated to all of the other braces on the same side of the cot in a manner which will be readily understood.
What is claimed is 1. In a collapsible cot, the combination with legs pivotally connected in pairs and provided with hinge members, of braces pivotally connected in pairs, and links pivotally connected to said braces and to said hinge nected with said braces and said hinge memmembers. hers, two braces being connected with the 2. In it collapsible cot, the combination links, connected with the legs intermediate with legs pivotally connected in pairs, of the end legs.
