Application led .Tune 16, 1917. Serial No. 175,095.
whereby through the reciprocation of a rider, the yedges of separable parts may be brought together, to cause fasteners carried by said edges to interlock with each other.'
It is Within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type-to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description pro- .within the scope of what is claimed, withceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it .being understood that changes in the precise embodiment=of the invention herein disclosed can be made out departing from the spirit of the invention.
Fig. 4 is a fragmental longitudinal sec-- tion showing the rider and parts which cooperate therewith;
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the rider;
Fig. 6 is a fragmental elevation showing a modified form of the invention;
Fig. 7 is a fragmental cross section showing a slight modification in the invention;
Fig. 8 is a cross sectonshowing a further modication in the invention;
Fig. 9 is an elevation showing a modied application of the invention; and
Fig. 10 is a section taken approximately on the line 10-10 of Fig.. 9.
In Fi 1 of the drawings there is shown an artic e of wearing apparel such as a shoe, including an upper l havin sides 2 and 3. A frontv piece 4 is secured a justably to the side 3 in any desired manner. In the present instance, but not of necessity, the front piece 4 is stitched to the part 3, as shown at 5. If desired, the front piece 4 may be omitted entirely, as will be obvious when the nature of the invention is better understood.
Folded strips 6 of flexible material are provided, and the free edges of these strips 6 extend beneath the side 2 and the front piece 4, if the latter is used. The strips 6 are attached to the parts 3 and 2 by fasteners 7 of any desired sort. In the present instance, the fasteners 7 take the form of headed pins having bendable prongs passing through the strips 6' and engaging the same. At their inner edges, the strips form enlarged loops 8 within which are located and held flexible elements 9 whichmay be cords. The exible elements 9 extend upwardly above the top edge of the upper 1 and terminate in finger ices 10. Fasteners 11 of U-shape and pre erably made of metal are clamped onto the looped portion 8 of one strip 6, and because this loop is enlarged by the cord 9, the fasteners 11 cannot slide l other end, each fastener 14 is supplied with an offset projection 17.
The numeral 18 denotes a rider preferably made of metal and of U-shape in longitudinal section, the rider 18 including an inner wall 19 and an outer wall 20. The walls 19 and 2O are connected by an integrally formed upstanding U-shaped yoke 21. In the yoke 21 is disposed a reinforcing filler 22 held in place by a rivet 23 passing through the yoke 21. The walls 19 and 20 of the rider are convexed in opposite directions to form guides 24 and 25 which diverge toward their upper ends, as clearly indicated -in Fig. 4. The guides 25 which constitute a part 0f the suffix the outer wall 20 are outwardly flexed at their lower ends, as shown at 26, for purposes to be set forth hereinafter. Mounted in the yoke 21 is an upstanding eye 27 to which is attached a tab 28.
In practical operation, when the rider 18 is drawn upwardly by means of thetab 28, the rider slides over the fasteners 11and 14, the same beingreceived between the guides 24 and 25 of the rider. Because the guides at the respective sides of the rider converge, as they extend downwardly, as clearly shown in Fig. 4, the tongue 12 will engage beneath the keeper 16 when the rider is drawn upwardly, and the projection 17 will engage beneath the tongue, as clearly indicated in Fig. 4, to maintain the tongue engaged with the keeper.
When itis desired to open the shoe, the finger pieces 10 are pulled in opposite di,- rections, whereupon the rider 18 will slide downwardly over'the fasteners 11 and 14, the parts coacting as guides.
In Fig. 6 of the drawings, a modified form of the invention .has been shown.Y Parts hereinbefore described have been designated by the numerals previously used, with the suffix a. In this form of the iinvention, one side of the upper is shown at 29 and has eyelets 30. The corresponding strip 68L is provided with eyelets 31, and through the eyelets 30 and 3l is passed a lacing cord 32. This construction, preferably, is used at one side only of the shoe and renders unnecessary such a part as the front piece 4:. kWhen the front piece 4 is used, the stri s 6 and attendant parts are'assembled with jthe part 4 and with the side 2 of the upper, and an adjustment is effected by bringing the front piece 4 4over onto the side 3 and stitching the same in place, or securing it otherwise, the stitching 5 being used; in the present embodiment of the inventlon.
In Fig. 7 of the drawings, the numeral 52 denotes a iiexible element as the part 4 orv the part 2 of Fig. 3, the fasteners 53 being clamped directly onto the member 52, and the folded strips 6 of Fig. 3 being omitted.
In Fig. 8, parts hereinbefore described are denoted by numerals previously used, with a. Fig. 8 may be compared with Fig. 3, and it will be noted that in the modification contemplated in Fig. 8, the side 3a 1s connected with the'front piece 4a by means of fasteners 51, like the elements 7 of Fig. 3, the strips 6a being stitched,fas shown at 50, to the sides 4a and 2a.y
In Figs. 9 and 10 of the drawings, a modication in the invention is shown. In the said figures, the numeral 70 denotes a corset,
`the edges of which are indicated at 71 and 72. Fasteners 84 of the kind hereinbefore described, are carried by the edges 71 and 72 of the corset, and the rider appears at 73.
A plate 74 is attached to the edge 7l at the lower end thereof and carries studs 75 and 76 spaced a art transversely of the corset. The plate 4 has a projection 7 7 on its lower edge, near to the stud 75. A plate 78 is attached to the edge 72 of the corset, near to the lower end thereof. The numeral 79 denotes a latch pivoted at 80 to the plate 78. The latch 79 has an offset arm 81, overlapping the plate 74., The arm 81 has a notch 82 in its upper edge, receiving the pro-` jection 76, and the arm has a notch 83 inl i ceived in a notch 82 and the stud 75 is re-v ceived in the notch 83, thus preventing a separation of the edges of the corset at the lower ends thereof. When it is desired to disengage the latch 79, a, downward movement of the plate 78 will cause the latch 7 9L to swing downwardly, with the stud 75vas a fulcrum, the notch 82 being disengaged from the stud 76. The lower edge of the latch 79 then comes into contact with the projection 77, which, acting as a fulcrum,
disengages the notch 83 from the stud 76.
A device of the class described comprising parts having separableedges;l fasteners car-V ried by said edges, the fasteners on one edge being provided with tongues, the fasteners on the other edge being provided at one end with offset keepers receiving the tongues when said edges are-brought together, the last specified fasteners being provided at their other ends with projections which engage the tongues when the tongues are engaged with the keepers; and a rider slidable on the fasteners, and constituting means for bringing the fasteners together to cause the tongues to interlock with the keepers.
In testimony 'that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM M. MCCLEAREN.
