TIGI-ITEN'ING APPARATUS FOR MOLDING-BOXES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June ill, IQHIS.
Application filed November 27, 1917. Serial No. 204,235.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HEINRICH HERMANN SPRINGER, a subject of the King of Denmark, residing at Copenhagen, in the Kingdom of Denmark, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tightening Apparatus for Molding-Boxes, of which the following a specification.
My invention relates to a tightening apparatus for molding-boxes holding together the several frames of which such boXes are composed. It is of great importance that such frames are held immovably together during the casting in order that they do not give way when the molten iron is poured into the mold.
In a known manner hoops around taps on the said frames have been used for tightening in combination with wedges. That arrangement has not, however, proved perfectly sure and many a casting has miscarried through the hoops loosening causing the mold to burst, especially when the taps on the frames have not been placed straight opposite each other, as in such cases the hoops have pulled in a slanting direction.
My present invention has for its object to make it possible to keep the frames securely together even when the taps may not be situated straight opposite each other.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
1 are the frames forming the molding-box and being furnished with branches 2 for spigots and with taps 8 for tightening purposes.
These frames are according to my invention tightened by a hoop 4 adapted to be placed around the lower tap 3 and being riveted to a piece of hoop-iron 5 inserted in a bracing device placed on the upper tap 3. This bracing device consists of a circular hoop 6 laid about the said tap 3 and around which the hoop-iron 5 is carried and inserted between a pair of jaws 78. The jaw 7 is firmly connected with the hoo 6 while the jaw 8 may pivot around a olt 9 and is forced against the jaw 7 by a handlebar 10, having a bush 11 bearing a tap 12 around which a rod 13 may turn in a plane rectangular to that of the paper. The rod 13 has a series of incisions 14 into which the hoop-iron 5 may be jammed. When now the hoop-iron 5 is jammed in between the jaws 7 and 8 and the rod 10 is forced downward the hoop-iron 5 will tighten and pull the molding-frames 1 close together, whereafter the rod 10 will be retained through the hoop-iron 5 being jammed into one of the incisions 14 on the rod 13. For each molding-box two or four tightening devices are employed by which means the mold is held securely together even when the taps 3 should not be placed exactly opposite each other.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a tightening apparatus for moldingboXes consisting of a series of frames having taps, the combination of a circular hoop 6 having a firm and a movable jaw and a handlebar, and being adapted to be placed on the tap of the upper frame, another hoop 4 adapted to be placed on the tap of the lower frame, a piece of hoop-iron 5 connected with the said hoop 4t, and being carried about the said hoop 6 and jammed. in between the said jaws, and strained by the said handlebar, and a rod connected with the said handlebar and having a series of incisions for the said hoop-iron, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HEINRICH HERMANN SPRINGER.
