CHARLES LAMPITT, OF LONDON, ARTHUR JOHN OARLILE, OF BURTON-ON TRENT, AND OUTHBERT SIMKIN, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
APPARATUS FOR SUPPORTING CASKS OR BARRELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,298, dated February 13, 1900. Application filed November 17, 1899. Serial No. 737,364. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that we, CHARLES LAMPITT, residing at 8 Crescent road, Wood Green, London, N., ARTHUR JOHN OARLILE, residing at 270 Branstone road, Burton-on-Trent, in the county of Stafford, and CUTHBERT SIMKIN, re-
siding at 7 Southampton Row,London, W. 0.,
England, subjects of Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain,have invented a new and useful device or apparatus to be used in multiple for supporting casks and barrels externally when exposed to internal pressure, (for which we have applied for a patent in Great Britain, No. 20,478, dated September 28, 1898,) of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to a device or apparatus to be used in multiple for encompassing the staves and supporting externally casks and barrels when subjected to high internal pressure; and it consists of certain improvements upon and a modification of the bulgewise supporting device described and shown in our previous application for the grant of Letters Patent in the United States of America, Serial No. 714,408, dated April 25, 1899.
Figure 1 is an elevation, and Fig. 2 a plan or top view, of same Our invention consists of a pair of approximately semicircular metallic castings Aand B, pivotally connected at a point C and adapted to open from each other (as indicated by the dotted outline of A in Fig. 1) to facilitate the fixation of same upon and in such a manner as to surround and support any part of the height of a cask or barrel D when the free ends of A and B are brought together and connected by a bolt and nut E, the portion B being provided with a footing F for supporting the whole.
At suitable intervals along the frames A and B we provide any number of holes G, through which are passed hollow rods H, each adapted to be rotated by the means of awheel or handle J and secured in position bya flange K, the inner ends of the said tubes or hollow rods being provided with female screwthreads, with which engage the outer ends of threaded bolts L, the inner ends of the said bolts being connected to metallic or other blocks M each in the form of a sector of a circle, so as to fit approximately the external formation of the cask or barrel D and the internal formation of the frames A and B.
The frames A and B having been placed around the cask in the desired position and secured by the bolt and nut E, the handles J would be rotated in proper order until all the blocks M abut firmly and evenly and with equal pressure against the cask D, thus securing and supporting circumferentially that part of the cask at which the said apparatus has been fixed, as described, and thereby relieving any strain upon the hoops of the cask, and so rendering it impossible for the cask to burst at that part under almost any internal pressure.
The cask may be surrounded by any num* ber of such devices, even to the extent of their being in touch with each other; but whatever may be the number employed the center one, or that covering the bung-hole of the cask, may have its section A so arranged as to provide a plate or block N, having a cen tral hole P, adapted to receive and hold a plug or other device for closing said bung-hole or for receiving and holding either of the bunghole-closing devices described and shown in the specification and drawings of our said previous application for a patent, Serial No. 714,408, dated April 25, 1899. The said plate or block N may have any number of set-screws R, the inner ends of which are each in swiveled connection with blocks S, shaped to fit the cask D and support the bung-hole stave.
The heads of the cask may be supported externally by the head-supportin g devices described and indicated by the reference-letters O, O, D, D, E, H, and a in the specification and drawings of our said previous application for patent, Serial No. 714,408, dated April 25, 1899.
Having now fully described our invention and the manner in which the same is to be employed for the purposes stated, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a means for supporting casks and barrels externally when exposed to internal pressure, the combination of a circular frame composed of two parts A and B hinged together at O, and bolted together at E, and having In witness whereof Wehave hereunto set our to any number of holes G, each provided with hands in presence of two witnesses. a hollow rod H, in connection with a threaded bolt L, attached to a shaped block M, the said g fifigg ggiiggg 5 holes G being adapted to be rotated by wheels CUTHBERT SIMKIN or handles J for placing the blocks M in close abutment with the outer surface of a cask or Witnesses:
barrel D substantially as herein described GEORGE THOMAS HYDE,
and shown by the drawings appended. HENRY CONRAD HEIDE.
