To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLAN B. FinLn, a subject of the King of England, a resident of West Clifton-Sea, in England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Coil-Supporting Means, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to dynamo-electric machines and it has special reference to means for supporting the overhanging endportions of the coils of such machines.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of the above-indicated character which shall be simple, inexpensive and rugged in construction and which shall serve -to overcome certain operating ditliculties hereinafter pointed out.
It is a well-known fact that, upon the occurrence of short-circuiting conditions during operation of a dynamo-electric machine, the relatively poorly protected overhanging end-portions of the machine coils receive exceedingly severe shocks. Particularly is this true in the case of turbo-generators of large capacity where straight portions of the necessarily large coils for manufacturing reasons must extend a considerable distance beyond the core proper. The points of greatest weakness are of course adjacent to the comparatively sharp corners of the slots at the edge of the core. There the insulating material that is customarily provided is less flexible than that employed upon the curved parts of the end-portions and is thus especially susceptible to the shocks incurred upon short-circuit, as will be readily appreciated.
According to my invention, I propose to overcome the objectionable features just recited by providing means for radially supporting the overhanging straight portions at a predetermined distance from the core, thereby opposing the cantaliver action of these portions and preventing their bearing upon the sharp corners of the core slots. The means in question may conveniently comprise a plurality of rods or pins that are suitably positioned in openings in the core end-plates to radially support the coil straight portions. Such an arrangement assures that any movement of the end-portions will occur in the more flexible curved parts rather than at the corners of the core slots. In order to increase the insulating surface or creepage distance of the pins, a portion of their surface is made of wavelike or corrugated form, as hereinafter dcscribed.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a view, in longitudinal section, of a portion of a dynamo-electric machine embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged view partially in elevation and partially in section, of a supporting pin constructed aecording to the invention.
Referring to the drawing, the portion of a dynamo-electric machine here shown comprises a magnetizable core l; an end-plate 2 therefor; a plurality of coils suitably disposed in the core and having over-hanging end-portions comprising, as is customary, straight portions 4: and bent portions 5; and a pluralitv of supporting rods or pins 6 for supporting the straight portions 4.
The general construction shown is old and familiar to those skilled in the art, and, consequently, only so much of the machine as is relevant to my invention will be further described.
The end-plate 2. which is illustrated as apertured for improving ventilation and reducing weight, may be of any other suitable construction. In the outer periphery of the plate are provided a plurality of recesses 7 disposed radially within the straight coil portions 4 to receive the pins 6.
The pins 6, after being severally disposed in the recesses 7, are trimmed at their outer ends to allow the coils to rest firmly upon them, thereby opposing the cantaliver action of the straight coil-portions l without unduly springing the same.
Flach pin 6 has a cylindrical positioning end provided with a tapering tip 8 to snugly t the drilled recess 7 a cylindrical supporting end 9, and an intermediate portion 10 having an irregular or uneven sur face, such as is produced by corrugations or the like. The purpose of this uneven surface is to increase the insulating surface or creepage distance and the heat-radiating properties of the pins.
I do not wish to be restricted to the speciic structural details and arrangement of parts herein set forth, but desire that only such limitations shall be imposed as are indicated in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
l. In a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a, magnetizable member having a plurality of slots and a plurality of coils disposed Within said slots and having over-hanging end-portions respectively comprising a straight portion and an inclined portion, of a plurality of independent insulating pins located Within sai'd overhanging portions for supporting each of said straight portions and biasing the same away from the bottoms of said slots.
2. In a dynamo-electric machine, the combination With a magnetizable member having1 a plurality' of slots and a plurality of coils disposed in said slots and having overhanging end-portions respectively comprising a straight portion and an inclined portion, of a plurality of independent radial pins located Within said overhanging portions for supporting each of said straight portions at points adjacent to said magnetizable member and adapted to bias said coils avvay from the bottoms of said slots at the ends of said magn'etizable member.
3. In a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a magnetizable member having a plurality of peripheral slots and a plurality of coils disposed in said slots and having straight portions extending beyond the end of said member, and inclined portions adjacent thereto, of a plurality of radial insulating pins severally disposed in recesses in said member and adapted to prevent said straight portions from bearing upon the sharp inner edges of the slots under the bending action of said inclined portions.
4. In a dynamo-electric machine, theconibination With a magnetizable member having a plurality of peripheral' slots and a plurality of coils disposed in said' slots and having straight portions extending beyond the edges of said member, of an end-plate for said member having a plurality of recesses severally disposed radially Within said straight portions, and a plurality of pins severally dispose/l in said recesses to engagey thel inner surfaces; of said portions.
5. In a dynamo-electric machine, the coinbination with a n'iagnetizable core having a plurality of peripheral slots and a plurality of coils disposed in said slots and having straight portions exten ing beyond' the edges ot said core, of an end-plate for said core having a plurality or" recesses severally disposed radially Within said straight portions and' a predetermined distance from said core, and a pluralityv of pins severally disposed in said recesses to radially support said straight portions and having uneven surfaces for increasing the insulating properti'es of the pins.
