COIL-SUPPORT.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLAN B. FIELD, a subject of the King of England, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Coil-Supports, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to dynamo-electric machines and it has special reference to means for supporting and spacing the portions of coils that overhang the cores of such machines.
The object of my invention is to provide an effective, reliable and simple means of the above-indicated character.
Heretofore, the several intercrossing layers of coils comprising the overhanging portions have been supported and spaced by means of a plurality of devices severally comprising a plurality of blocks of insulating material disposed on the exterior of said layers and a plurality of bolts extending through said blocks and severally between said coils. The blocks were'bolted to metal brackets attached to the core. Displacement of the coils was prevented chiefly by friction, necessitating a pressure which tended to injure the insulating material. In case of a short-circuit of the machine, the layers of winding tend to shear on one another, and the above described means of supporting the coils has been found unsatisfactory, particularly in large machines, in such an extremity, chiefly by reasonof the small bearing surface of the bolts upon the coils.
According to my invention, I provide a supporting and spacing member adapted for disposal intermediate the layers of coils and having a plurality of projecting ribs oppositely inclined on opposite sides of the said member for engaging and spacing the several coils in the said layers. The old means, hereinbefore described, of clamping down the coils and attaching the spacing members to the machine core, or any other suitable means, may be employed. It will be understood thatthe coils are prevented from relative motion by reason of the wedging action of my device, which simultaneously engages the intercrossing layers, and thus stiffensthe winding considerably, irrespective of the clamping means, which,
moreover, does not require the application of excessive pressure.
It will be also understood that the shearing tendency of the coil layers in case of a short-circuit is successfully overcome by the relatively large bearing surface on the coils of the separating member employed in my lnvention.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal section on the line LL of Fig. 4; Fig. 2 is a view in top plan and Fig. 3 is a View in side elevation, partially in section, of the separator; Fig. 4 is a view in plan development, with parts omitted for clearness, of a portion of a dynamo-electric machine embodying my invention; Fig. 5 is a view, partially in section on the line VV of Fig. 4, and showing the disposition of coils.
Referring to the drawings, a dynamoelectric machine 1 is provided with a core 2, an end-plate 2 and a plurality of coils 3 disposed in core slots and severally having portions 4 which overhang the core and constitute a substantially frusto-conical structure that comprises outer and inner intercrossing layers 5 and 6, respectively. A plurality of my coil-supporting devices 7 are attached at intervals to the overhanging portions, as hereinafter described.
The devices 7 severally comprise a coilseparator 8 disposed intermediate the coil layers 5 and 6, a plurality of clamping bars 9 disposed exterior to the'said layers, a plurality of plates 10 disposed upon the outer sides of the bars 9, and a plurality of bolts 11 for holding the entire device 7 in position.
The coil separator 8 comprises a bar 12 provided with a plurality of spaced ribs 13 and 14 located on opposite sides thereof and oppositely inclined for engaging and spacing the several coils 3 in the outer layer 5 and the inner layer 6, respectively. A plurality of bolt-holes 15 severally extend at intervals through the ribs 13 and 14 and the bar 12, and a relatively larger hole 15 is provided in one end of said bar. The clamping bars 9 may consist of any suitable insulating material, and the exterior plates 10 are preferably of sheet metal, for mechanical reasons. The bolts 11 extend through the plates 10, the bars 9 and the bolt-holes 15 in the separator 8', and a plurality of nuts 16' are disposed upon-one end of each of said bolts for permitting an application of pressure on the cflilrsupporting device 7. v
A plurality of brackets 17 are provided at intervals on the core 2 or on the end plate 2 for attachment, by means of a plurality of bolts 18, preferably to every alternate coil-supporting device 7, although any other arrangement may be employed. The brackets 17 are generally in the form of rightangled triangles, the hypotenuses of which coincide withelenients of the trusto-conical stri cture for ned the end-turns. I claim as my invention:
1, In a dynamo-electric machine,,th e combination with a core and a plurality o f coils disposed thereon and havingportions that overhangsaid core and comprise a plurality of intercrossing layers, of a plurality of members each adapted for spacing the layers and the coils in different layers.

13. In a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a core and a plurality of coils disposed thereon and having projecting portions that are arranged to form a frusto-conical structure, of an end-plate for said machine, a plurality of radially disposed supporting brackets engaging elements of said structure and attached to said end-plates, and a plurality of coilseparating devices severally comprising a base member, a plurality of projections for spacing the several coils in said portions, and means for attaching said member to said core.
14. In a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a core and a plurality of coils disposed thereon and having projecting portions that are arranged to form a frusto-conical structure, of an end-plate for said machine, a plurality of radially disposed triangular supporting brackets for said coils attached to said end-plates, and a plurality of coil-separating devices severally comprising a base member, a plurality of ribs on opposite sides of said memher for engaging and spacing the several coils in said portions and means for attaching said member to said core.
15. A coil-separating device comprising a base portion and a plurality of ribs equally and oppositely inclined to the axes of said base portion and on opposite sides of said base portion.
