FIELD-COIL COLLAR.
Application filed December 31, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL h IATTMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of lVilkinsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Field- Coil Collars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to dynamo-electric machines, especially of the alternating-cur rent rotating field-magnet type, and it has particular relation to means whereby the field-magnet coils are spaced from the pole pieces on which they are mounted.
The object of my invention is to produce a spacing device of the character indicated which shall facilitate insulating the coil from the pole piece, be strong and rugged in construction and simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
In. the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is a sectional view of a portion of a dynamoelectric machine, showing a spacing member constructed in accordance with my invention mounted thereon, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken along the line IIII of Fig. 1.
Heretofore, it has been customary to provide rotating field-magnet pole pieces with flanges extending on the outer sides of the field-magnet coils and to insert between the coils and the pole pieces layers of insulating material to prevent the coils from coming into contact with the pole pieces and also serving as supports therefor. It has been found, however, that, due to some unknown reason, possibly centrifugal force, the piece of insulating material between the coil and the flange is frequently broken, and the pieces thereof fly out of position, leaving the coil loosely mounted upon the pole piece. This is, of course, undesirable, especially in high-speed machines.
By my invention, I provide a spacing means which comprises an insulating member reinforced by a similarly shaped metallic member and joined thereto in such manner that, even though the insulating member becomes broken, the pieces thereof will remain in position, thus avoiding the difliculties above set forth.
For a further understanding of my invention, attention may now be had to the drawings in which I show a portion of a dynamo-electric machine rotor 1 upon which is mounted. a field-magnet pole piece 2 pro- Serial No. 269,147.
vided with an energizing coil 3. The pole piece 2 is provided with tips or flanges 4 which extend outside the coil, thus provid ing a support therefor against centrifugal forces generated by the rotation of the machine. The coil 3 is separated from the pole piece 2 by means of a layer of insulating material '5 and from the flanges 4 and the main body of the dynamo-electric machine rotor 1 by means of spacing devices 6. The spacing devices 6, as best shown in Fig. 2, com prise metallic collar members 7 and insulating collar members 8, both similar to the coil in peripheral contour. The collar member 7 is provided with pins 9 which project into openings 10 in the collar member 8, these openings being slightly larger than the pins so as to prevent the establishn'ient of any strains between the members 7 and 8 By this arrangement, the insulating collar 8 is loosely mounted upon the metallic collar 7 and is in engagement with the coil 3 so that the forces exerted thereby are e):- erted upon the collar member 8 which transmits them to the collar member 7 and thence to the flanges 4. By reason of the fact that the two collars are loosely joined together. either one or both of them may be slightly distorted without causing a strain upon the other at the point where they are connected, as would be the case if they were rigidly joined and, at the same time, the pins 9 prevent any pieces of the collar member 8 from leaving their position even though this member be broken. It is, of course, obvious that any number of pins may be used.
I Vhile I have shown my invention in but one form, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that it is not so limited but is susceptible of various minor changes and modifications without departing from the spirit thereof and I desire, therefore, that only such limitations shall be placed thereupon as are imposed by the prior art or are specifically set forth in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a dynamo-electric machine, a fieldmagnet pole piece provided with an energizing coil and means interposedintermediate said pole piece and said coil comprising an insulating spacing member and a separate metallic member connected to said insulating member to permit a limited amount of lateral movement therebetween.
2. In a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a rotating field-magnet memher having salient pole pieces, of energizing coils on said salient pole pieces, insulating spacing members disposed against the outer ends of said coils, reinforcing members contacting with the outer surfaces of said insulating spacing members, means for retaining said reinforcing members on said salient pole pieces, and means associated with the adjacent surfaces of said insulating spacing members and said reinforcing members for providing for limited relative movement in the planes of said adjacent surfaces.
3. In a dynamo-electric machine, a fieldmagnet pole piece provided with an energizing coil and means interposed intermediate said pole piece and said coil comprising a metallic spacing member provided with a olurality of projections, and an insulating member loosely mounted thereon having openings therein for receiving said projections.
l. In a dynamo-electric machine, a fieldnagnet pole piece provided with an energizing coil and means interposed intermediate said pole piece and said coil comprising a metallic spacing member, a plurality of pins mounted thereon, and an insulating spacing member similar in shape to said metallic spacing member and mounted thereagainst, said insulating member being provided with openings in which said pins fit loosely.
5. In dynamo-electric machine, a fieldmagnet pole piece provided with a flange adjacent the end thereof, a coil mounted on said pole piece intermediate the frame of said machine and said flange, and a metallic collar member disposed intermediate said flange and said coil and provided with projecting pins, and a separate similarly shaped insulating collar member disposed intermediate said coil and said metallic collar member and provided with openings in which said pins fit loosely.
6. A spacing member comprising a metallic member provided with projections, and a similarly shaped insulating member provided with openings into which said projections fit loosely.
7. In a dynamo-electric machine, a fieldmagnet pole piece provided with an ener gizing coil and means interposed intermediate said pole piece and said coil comprising a metallic spacing member, a plurality of pins mounted thereon, and an insulating spacing member similar in shape to said metallic spacing member and mounted thereagain st, said insulating member being provided with openings in which said pins fit, and said pins having a length less than the thickness of said insulating member.
8. A spacing member comprising a metallic member provided with a plurality of studs, and an insulating member provided with apertures into which said studs are adapted to project.
