To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GIBSON T. PETTICREW, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Deer Lodge, Powell county, State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looks for Freight- Oar Doors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to looks for freight oar doors, and comprises novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be specifically defined in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide a more eflicient lock and to simplify the construction as fullyas efficiency will permit. One specific object of my invention is to provide a lock which will at all times be in position for automatic engagement if the door be closed and one which has a minimum of projecting parts.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown my invention in the form which is now preferred by me.
Figure 1 shows, in perspective, adjacent parts of a door and door jamb having the lock mounted thereon.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the same parts on the line of the locking bolt.
Fig. 3' is a horizontal section through the parts on-the line of thelocking bolt.
Fig. 4 is a perspective of the locking bolt and its attached operating arms, the catch block being shown by dotted outline.
The standard type of freight car door is one in which the door is mounted to move upon guides along the outer face of the car sides. It is for this type of door that my device is intended to be applied. I have, however, not illustrated the mounting of the door as this is so well known as to make it unnecessary.
Cars having this type of doors employ a jamb 1 projecting approximately the thickness of the door, against which the face of the door abuts. Through this jamb, paralleling the side face of the car and the direction of movement of the door, is made a hole for receiving the locking bolt 2. Faceplates- 4 and 40 may be used to strengthen the jamb and to furnish a stronger support for the bolt.
Both ends of the bolt project beyond the jamb. That end toward the door has a transverse slot 21 and has its tip beveled or coned, as at 22. The other end has an operating arm 5 secured thereto by which it may be turned. This arm is preferably secured so that it may itself be turned upon its axis. Tothis end I have shown the bolt as provided with a collar 23 which hasa bore 24 for the reception of a reduced end section of the arm 5, this being prevented from coming out, as by riveting over its end. On the edge of the door 9 which contacts with this j amb, is placed a casing 6, preferably made of rolled plate bent intoshape. Thishas a tongue forming an extension of the upper end of the central section 60,
which is bent inward and downward, and
with its tip bent forward. The part 62 forms the upper wall, part 63 the inner side Wall and 64 the bottom wall of a chamber in which is a looking or catch block 7. This block is of a size to move vertically with ease and enough to permit locking and unlocking.
The face 60 has a hole 61 therein, for the reception of the locking bolt 2. The body of the door is. also bored, as at 90, for the same purpose and the horizontal bottom end 64 of the tongue as well as the lower end of the vertical wall 63, are centrally cut away to pass the bolt end, thus forminga slot 65 in the metal.
Thehorizontal end section 64 of the plate is at such a level as to support the block high enough that the inclined end 22 of the bolt 2 may raise the block and permit passage of the bolt until the block drops into the groove 21 of the bolt, when the door will be locked until the block is raised out of the groove.
Over the other end of the bolt is placed a casing 3, forming a chamber between it and plate 40 of depth suflicientto receive the collar 23. This is open at the front and,
top an amount suflioient to permit swinging the crank arms 5 between the horizontal and vertical positions. The shoulder 31 forms a stop for the horizontal position and 30 for the Vertical position. i The horizontal position of the arm 5 cor responds with the position of the bolt in which the bottom of the groove 21 in the bolt is horizontal, or that of locking engagement with the catch block 7. If the arm 5 be thrown upward, the bolt will be rocked, and the block 7 raised until the bolt is freed. The door may then be moved back.

A car door lock comprising a rotative bolt extending with its axis paralleling the direction of movement of the door in closing and with an end projecting and provided with a transverse groove, a laterally projecting operating handle secured to the other end of said bolt, a bolt casing having two separated walls lying one at each side said handle, the chamber formed by said walls being open to permit the projection and sWing'ing of said arm between the positions corresponding with the locked and unlocked positions of the bolt, and a socket member for receiving the projecting end of the bolt and having a "ertically movable locking block adapted to enter the transverse slot in the bolt.

A lock for sliding doors comprising a bolt mounted to turn and with its axis extending in the direct-ion of the movement of the door, the end of this bolt projecting and having a transverse notch, an arm projecting laterally from the bolt, a casing inclosing said arm and having an opening permitting the swinging movement of the arm needed to unlock the bolt, a cooperative member secured to the other part of the door construction and having an opening for the reception of the projecting end of the bolt, said member having a partition wall inward from its outer face forming a chamber into which the lower end of the bolt enters, and a locking block freely slidable vertically in said chamber and adapted to enter the transverse notch in the bolt.

A look for sliding doors comprising a bolt mounted to turn and with its axis extending in the direction of the movement of the door, the end of this bolt projecting and having a transverse notch, an arm projecting laterally from the bolt, a casing inclosing said arm and having an opening permitting the swinging movement of the arm needed to unlock the bolt, a cooperative member secured to the other part of the door construction and having an opening for the re ception of the projecting end of the bolt, said member having a partition wall inward from its outer face forming a chamber, the lower end of said partition extending outward toward the outer face of the member to form a support for the locking block and having a central slot for the reception of the end of the block, and a locking'block freely sliclable vertically in said chamber and adapted to be raised by the end of the bolt and to then enter the transverse slot in the bolt.

A look for sliding doors comprising two members mounted respectively upon the door and the door jamb, one of said members having a bolt mounted to turn upon its axis and extending in the direction of the movement of the door, the end of said bolt projecting and having a transverse slot and having an upper beveled surface between said slot and its outer end, an arm secured to and extending transversely from the opposite end of the bolt, a casing plate outwardly of said arm and in which the bolt is journaled, said plate having stop surfaces limiting the swing of the arm between locked and unlocked positions of the bolt, the other member of the lock having a chamber into which the projecting end of the bolt enters, a locking member vertically movable in said chamber and adapted to enter the transverse slot in the bolt and a support for said locking member holding it in position for engagement by the beveled end of the bolt to be lifted thereby.
