Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 21, 1918.
Application filed October 3, 1917. Serial No. 194,492.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosnrH A. STANSBURY,
a citizen of the United States, residing at,
Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Crutch, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to crutches used for supporting injured or disabled people.
The main object of my invention is to provide a crutch which can be clamped to the supporting arm by the supporting arm.
Another object is to reduce the strain on the arm pit.
Another object is to provide a crutch with an adjustable handle whereby a crutch can be clamped to the arm.
Another object is to construct a crutch with a handle and clamping members extending from the crutch upwardly beyond the handle to a suitable extent to fit around the arm when the handle is grasped by the hand.
Another object is to construct a crutch of the split type with suitable clamping jaws to fit around the arm above the hand, having adjusting means below the clamping jaws which can be adjusted so that the clamping jaws fit tightly around the arm.
Another object is to reduce the wear caused by a crutch on the clothes.
Another object is to provide a crutch which can easily and quickly be clamped to the arm by the hand in which it is used.
Other objects will appear from the following description and appended claims as well as from the accompanying drawing.
I11 the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary elevation with the adjusting means in my device slightly modified.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the clamping jaw in my device.
Similar numbers refer to similar parts throughout the papers.
In Fig. 1, 3 represents the crutch divided on the upper end into the two supporting parts 4: and 5. These supporting members terminate in the clamping jaws 6. At a suitable distance downwardly from the clamping jaws, supporting bars are connected by a handle 7. This handle is hollow and is provided with left and right hand threads inside. The bolts 8 and 9 are secured to the yokes 10 which are pivotally connected with the supporting members 4: and 5 by the pivots 11. The supporting members 4 and 5 are reinforced as indicated at 12 to receive the pivot connection. In Fig. 2 is a slight modification of this pivot connection between the bolts and the supporting arms. In this case the bolt 9 is provided with a bore 15 at the end 14, this end 14 fitting swingably in a socket 13 which is incased in the supporting member 5 of the crutch.
From this it will be understood that this invention does not have to be connected by the screws shown but that for the main part an adjusting means is provided between the supporting members of the crutch which will make it possible to clamp the upper ends, being the jaw members 6, tightly around the arm on which the crutch is used. Inserting the arm through the clamping members or between the clamping members toward the handle 7 and in grasping the handle with the hand, turning this handle, the clamping members 6 are thus tightly adjusted around the arm above the hand, by which the handle has been adjusted. It will easily be understood that the bolts 8 and 9 may be provided with single threads, double threads, or they may be so threaded to allow a quick adjustment of the clamping members 6 and the supporting parts 4 and 5 by the handle 7.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a crutch having a leg end and two supporting members extending from the leg end upwardly, clamping members formed on the upper ends of the supporting members each of nearly semi-circular form for fitting practically horizontally around the arm above the hand in which the crutch is used.
2. In a crutch having a leg end and two bars extending upwardly from the leg end, an adjustable handle disposed between the two upwardly extending'bars for clamping the bars toward the arm. I
3. In a crutch having a leg end and two bars extending upwardly from the le end terminating in clamping members fitting around the arm above the hand in which the crutch is used, a handle disposed between the two bars a suitable distance below the clamping members so as to form adjusting means for the clamping members.
4. In a crutch having a leg end and two bars extending upwardly from the legend bolts forming. the adjusting means for the 10 terminating in clamplng members fitting clamping. members onthenloars of the crutch.
