My invention relates to doors for hermetically sealingretorts, digesters, or other vessels which sustain internal pressure, and especially consists in means for hinging, closing and sealing suchdoors.

As shown in the drawings,A is the retort or vessel to be closed, which may be of any suitable or desired form. A heavy metal frame 2 surrounds andforms the end of the retort, and upon this frame the door 3 is suspended and secured as follows: The door is of .curved or dished form to give it strengthand is reinforced by ribs 4, on the inside, as plainly shown in Fig. 2. The pressure bars 5 are of a deep section, curved at one end to fit between lugs 7 on the door frame, these lugs forming hinges by which the door is supported and upon which it swings when opened or closed.
"The door 3 closes upon an elastic gasket 9 which can be inserted in a groove either in the door "or the frame, and is pressed in wardly by the bars 5 and cams 19, as shown in Fig. 2. The bars 5 are carried upon the door by means ofhousings 11 which are fixed to the door and fit looselyover the enlargements 12 of the bars. Screws 13 pass through these enlargements or bosses and through the transverse portion of the housings 11, and by turning these screws, after the door has been closed, the pressure is exertedto retain "them in their closed position.
The bars 5 are hinged to the fixed lugs 7 by means of bolts '21 and as the door is carried by the bars 5 and the housings 11, through whichsaid bars pass, it will be obt5 vious that the release of the bars 5' so that they may swing about the hinge pins will allow the door to be opened, when desired.
The door has upon each side projecting lugs 5 contiguous to the bars, and upon the hinge pin or bolt 21 is carried a locking clutch 15, which is adapted to swing upon the bolt 21 in unison with the movement of the door about its hinge. The movement of this locking device is effected by means of a lug 01' pin 16 which projects from the side of the bar and engages the top of the clutch 15, thus closing it down against the outer surface of the door and causing it to hook over the projecting lugs 5 forcing this portion of the door down against the packing gasket 9. At the opposite end the bars 5 are made straight and plain and these bars are engaged by means of a forked end link 17, which is adapted to swing over the end of bar 5. This brace is hinged, as shown at 17, and is turnable about itshinge pin, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and between the jaws of the link above the bar 5 and the eccentric cam by which the door is locked in place. When thus swung into position over the ends of the bars 5 it will at the same time engage the locking device 15" and will turn it down over the lug 5 upon that edge of the door; this action being efiected by means of the lug or pin 16% carried by the link or brace 17, so that when the link or brace 17 is turned to engage the bar 5, this pin will simultaneously turn the locking device 15* down against the edge of the door and into engagement with the lug 5 at that point.
In order to lock and firmly hold the links or braces 17 with the bar 5, I have shown cams 19 pivoted at the ends of links 17, which links are pivoted and turnable about the pins 18. The cams have levers 22 by which they are turnable, and they have the pins on which they turn eccentric to the periphery and a flat surface 10 so that when turned to bring this surface into engagement with the upper edges of the bars 5, this flat surface will prevent the cam from turning accidentally, and avoid the possibility of the door being blown open by pressure from .the interior of the retort. If, by any chance, the lugs might become disengaged, the safety catches 15 and 15 will prevent the door from being blown open by reason of the dovetailed engagement of these catches with the lugs 5 upon the door.

be securely locked and the door hermetically sealed.
In order to open the door it will be necessary to first turn the eccentric by means: of its lever 22, or an equivalent thereof, thus releasing the pressure upon the bar and allowing the door 'to move sufliciently to allow the internal pressure to escape, the door being meantime securely held in pla'ce by the hook latches 15-15. This internal pressure having been released, the door may then be opened by first swinging thelinks 17 out of engagement with the hooked latches 15 and then swinging the bars which carry the door about its hinges, when the hooks upon the rear edge of the door will be automatically swung back by the movement of the bars 5.

In a retort, a door frame, a door hinged for closing thereon, pivoted means on opposite sidesof the door for locking the same closed, safety locking means operable for holding the door in a partially opened position when released by said first means, and means carried by the pivoted means for moving the safety locking means to operative position.
9. In a retort, a door frame, a door th for, hinge knuckles on the frame, door locking means carried by the door for supporting the latter from the knuckles, a hinge pin connecting the means to the knuckles, and a safety catch also connected to the hinge knuckles by the hinge pin for engaging the door to hold the'latter from blowing open when released by said first means.
10. In a retort, a door frame, a door therefor, hinge knuckles on the frame, means carried by the door for supporting the latter from the knuckles, a hinge pin connecting the means to the knuckles, a safety catch also connected to the hinge knuckles by the hinge pin for engaging the door, and means between the safety catch and said first means for effecting movement of the catch to operative position on closing movement of the door.
