Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2t, tare.
Application filed September 27, 1916. Serial No. 122,458.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PERCIVAL H. ATKIN- son, a native-born citizen of the United States, residing at Burns, in the county of llarney and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attach-.-
ments for the Check-Chutes of Check-Operated Locks, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to an attachment for the check chutes of locks which may be used upon lockers, and the like, and in which mechanism for holding the lock bolt in locked position may be rendered temporarily inactive through the insertion within the key check chute of a key check which was discharged from the chute upon'movement of the bolt of the look to locking position. I
The primary object of the invention is to provide an attachment of this character which when mounted upon the lock casing not only provides an entrance to the key check chute and normally permits the inj sertion Within the key check chute of the key check expelled from the look by movement of the lock bolt to locked position, but is so constructed that it may be operated to prevent the insertion of said key check, thus rendering it necessary for the possessor of the check to obtain from the person in charge of the lockers a check by'means of which the mechanism controlling the movement of the lock bolt may be operated thereby enabling a charge to be made for the use of the locker upon which the lock is installed after a predetermined period.
Another object of the invention is to provide an attachment for controlling the insertion of a key check within the check chute in which a dial plate having a check slot therein is provided with a rotatable disk having formed therein crossed key check slots of different configuration which, when the disk is turned upon the dial plate topause either of said key check slots to regislter with the slot in the dial plate, will only permit a key check corresponding in shape to the key check slot in the disk which is in registration with the slot in the dial. plate to be passed therethrough, thereby enabling said mechanism to be operated to prevent the operation of the look after a predetermined time by the check discharged therefrom or by duplicate checks.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, although no restriction is necessarily made to the precise details of construction therein shown, as changes, alterations, and modifications, within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired. 7
Like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a .view'in elevation of a locker having connected therewith a check operated lock to the casing of which the invention is shown applied.
Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of the attachment and showing the same mounted upon a portion ofa lock case.
the reverse the line H of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal transverse section on the line 55 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a. detailed view in elevation of the rotatable disk included in the check controlling mechanism.
Fig. 7 is a detailed view of the indicator rmg.
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a pair of keyg checks for use in connection with the 0c Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates a locker upon the door 2 of which is arranged a key check operated lock preferably constructed as shown in the United States Patent to Flowers, No.
1.180993, the casing 4 of which is' arranged 'bolt (not shown in the drawings) may be operated.
Secured to the face plate 5 in any suitable manner to. over-lie the circular opening 6 therein is a dial plate 9 having formed therein a centrally arranged key check slot alining with the entrance opening in the key check chute 7 and adjacent which is formed, in the plate 9, an arcuate indicator arm receiving slot 11 the length of which is approximately 150 degrees. Spaced graduations 12 formed in the dial plate 9 radiate from. the slot 11 with some of the graduaf tions having arranged adjacent thereto, suitable designating characters 13.
Arranged on the rear face of the dial plate 9 and in contact with the end of the key check chute 7, is'a circular plate 14,
said plate bein'gsecu-red to the dial plate 9 in any suitable manner and has formed in the face thereof which is to contact with said plate, a centrally arranged and circular recess forming a disk chamber 15 communicating with the entrance opening in the key check chute 7 through a key check slot 16 formed in the rear face of the plate 14 and alining with the key check slot 10 in the dial plate '9.
Secured to the rear face of theplate 14 is a spring having fingers 17 which when the key check 8- is passed through the slots 10 and 16 are spread apart by the key check, and serve to prevent the withdrawal of the key check after its insertion within the key check chute 7.
Arranged within the chamber 15 in the plate 14 is a disk 18 having formed upon one face thereof a centrally arranged extension 19 contacting with the rear face of the dial plate 9 and providing the disk 18 with an annular bearing shoulder 20, said extension having formed therein crossed key check slots 21 and 22, the side walls of which are provided with spaced ribs 23 so that each key check slot has a different configu-. ration and will prevent a ,key check which does not correspond in shape thereto from being passed through the key check slots 10 and 16.
The face of the disk 18 which confronts the rear face of the dial plate 9 has formed therein a circumferential series of spaced openings 24 spaced from the periphery of the disk 18 and shoulder 20 thereon.
Mounted to turn on the shoulder 20 and over-lying the spaced openings 24 in the disk 18 is an indicator ring 25 retained on the disk 18 by the dial plate 9, said ring having formed thereon a laterally extendmg indicating arm 26 having formed thereon at its free end an indicating hand 27 arof the indicator ring 25' upon the disk 18 9 and that the indicator ring may be turned the distance of the slot 11 in the dial plate 9, on the disk 18.
To look the indicator ring to the disk 18 so that the disk and-ring may be simultaneously turned Within the chamber 15 and also to afford an operating means for said members, an operating handle 29 is arranged at the free end of the indicator arm 26 and has passing therethrough a longitudinally extending channel 30 enlarged and threaded for a portion of its length, as at 31, said channel having passing therethrough 'a' tie pin 32 one end of which is received in an opening 24 in the disk 18, the other end of the tie pin having formed thereon a channeled head 33 disposed in the enlarged portion of the channel 31 thus securing theoperating handle 29 to the indicator arm and adju'stablv connecting the indicator ring with the disk 18.
To retain the tie pin 32 in the channel in the operating handle 29, a cap 34 is provided and has formed thereon a threaded extension 35 adapted to be received in the enlarged and threaded portion 31 of the channel 30 thus removably connecting-the cap 34 with the operating handle to permit the removal of the tie pin 32 so that the position may be'changed so that the key check slot 21 or 22 which previously registered with the key check slots 10 and 16 when the disk and rmg were turned can not be brought into registration with the key check slots 10 and 16 when said ring and disk areaturned by means of the handle 29.
VVhen the device is in use, the indicator ring 25 is preferably connected with the disk 18 in such a manner that when one of the key check slots 21 or 22 is in registration with the key check slots 10 and 16, the indicating hand 27 will be arranged at a point intermediate the ends of the' slot 11 so that a key check which corresponds in shape to the key check slot which'is in registration with the openings 10 and 16 may be passed through said openings and into the key check chute 7, the slot 11 being of such length that when the handle 29 is moved in either direction, the key check slot in the disk 18 which is out of registration with the key check slots 10 and 16 can not be brought into registration with said slots unless the tie pin 32 is removed from the handle 29 b and the disk 18 turned to causesaid slot to register with the slots 10 and 16.
When the indicator ring and disk 18 are connected in such a manner that the indicator hand is arranged at a point intermediate the ends of the slot 11, one of the key check slots in the disk 18 will be in registration with the slots 10 and 16 in the dial plate and plate 14. It will be seen upon reference to Fig. 2 1n the drawings that the key check 30 v 8 which corresponds to the shape of the slotkey checkchute naeeyrae in registration with the slots 10 and 16 may be passed throu h said slots and into the and that when the handle 29 is moved toward either end of the slot 11,
the key check slot which is in registration with the slots 10 and 16 will be moved out of alinement therewith thereby requiring the indicating hand .to be again moved to a opening 24 in the disk 18 and the disk turned until the other key check slot therein Y is brought into registration with'th'e openings 10 and 16 at which time, the indicator ring 25 may be again locked to thedisk 18 by the 1 tie pin 32 so that when the indicator hand is arranged centrally of the slot 11,-the check which could previously be passedthroughfi the slots 10 and 16 will be prevented from i being passed therethrough'by the ribs on the walls of the slot which is in registration with said openings, thereby rendering it necessary for the possessor of the check to secure an additional check from the owner of the locker before access may be had to the locker upon which'the lock is installed.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is at once apparent that a deviceha's been provided which when applied to a check operated. lock will serve as a guard to control the admission of the check within the lock. 1 r Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
1. The combination with of a check operated lock, of a casing having check slots therein registering with the enthe check chute.
