The primary object of the invention is the' provision of a window grating normally out of the way, @dering no obstruction to the window, but readily released for automatically positioning within the -window frame for preventing unauthorized persons from entering the window. l
A further object of the device is to provide a grating for preventing burglars from' entering a building through the window thereof, the device contemplating a normally depressed and inclosed protecting member,
adapted for automatic movement across the window frame to a predetermined regulated extent; the device being inexpensive and asily installed in connection with any win- With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and illustrated-in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
view taken" upon line IV-IV of lin the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like reference characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the same, n
Figure 1 is an interior elevational ,View of a window provided with the present device showing its operative arrangement,
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the same, l
Fig. 3 is a 4View illustratingthe grating in its inoperative depressed position, j
Fig. 1 is a horizontal transverse sectional Fig. 3, Fig. 5 is a horizontal transverse sectional view through the window frame of the structure shown in Fig.l 3,
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a portion Fig. 7 is a perspective view `of a portion of the locking latch.
The present invention is serviceable in connection with the window of any form of building and the same is herein illustrated in connection with `the side wall 10 of a building having a window frame 11, arranged therein, window sashes 12 and 13 being arranged in the usual Ina-nner in the casing, which casing is provided with al'window sill 14C. j
The house wall 10 is provided with a receiving chamber 15 for a suitable metallic grating 16, of sufficient size for moving upwardly through a slot 17 in the vwindow sill 14, to obstruct passage through substantiallyl the entire window casing 11. The grating 16 isprovided with a keeper block 18 at each of its lower corners within the chamber 15, while a helical spring 19 is. arranged within the said chamber for seating the blocks 18 thereon.
A, latch bar 20 is shiftably arranged with- Bolts 24 outwardly projectin from the endportions of the bar 20, are a apted to enter sockets 25 in the blocks 18 when the grating 16 is at the eXtreme of its upper movement with the said blocks engaging the .lower face of the window sill 11, 1t bein .noted that a Aroller 26 is carried by each o the blocks 18 for engaging the adjacent inner wall of the chamber 15 during the vertical movements of the said grating.
A' releasing arm 27 is carried by thebar 20, slidably arranged through the wall 10 and a plate 28 secured to the said wall adjacent the window sill 111, an enlarged head 29 being carried by the said arm for inwardly moving the bar 210 against the action ofthe springs 23. I Notches 30 are arranged in the end stri s 31 of the grating 16, adapted to receive t e bolt 21 when the said grating is elevated at diderent heights, it being understood that slots 32 are arranged in the side strips 31 adjacent the upper ends thereof adapted to Areceive the bolts 21 when the grating is depressed within the chamber 15, with its upper end arranged withinthe slot 17, and a hinged door member 33 overlying the same under the influence of a suitablev leaf spring 34.
From this detailed description of the device, the entire operation thereof will be at once apparent, it being understood that during the day time the grating 16 is depressed within the-chamber 15, as best illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawing, and at which times the springs 19 are under compression, the grating being bolts 24 engaging the slots 32 when desired to protect the wlndow, such as duringthe night time. The head 29 of the -arm 27 is grasped and pulled inwardly of the wall 10,
whereupon the bolts 24, being released, theV grating 16 is forced upwardly by the springs 19 secured to bolts 24 engaged within the sockets 25 of the blocks 18 therely locking the grating forwardly of the win ow opening. The opposite window strips of the frame 11 are preferably provided with vertical slots 36 for receiving the side strips -31 land guiding` the grating 16 during its upward movement. When the grating is -elevated, the bolts 24 may be released by means of the heads 29, whereupon the grating 16 retained by means of the may be forcibly depressed into the chamber 15 and locked therein, as herein described,
The grating 16 is designed to be formed of suiiiciently strong material to prevent the same from being broken, while the space between the bars of the grating as well as above the grating when the latter is elevated are of insuicient sizeto permit a person to enter the building therethrough.
Whatl claim as new is A device of the type described, including a resiliently cushioned and incased member or guard depressible within its inclosing easing, and equipped at its lower corners with blocks having sockets, a resiliently 'cushioned latch-bar having projecting therefrom bolts adapted to enter or engage said sockets, when the guard is elevated, said latch-bar also having means for the disengagement of its bolts from said sockets, said guard having in its end-members spaced notches also adapted to be engaged by said bolts when said guard is adjusted at different elevations.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature.
