Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed September 21, 1917. Serial No. 192,576.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN Sroxn, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Envelop-Sealing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a machine for sealing envelops and has for its primary object the provision of a machine of this character which is especially adapted to expedite the operation of sealing envelops and positively insure a perfect inclosure.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a machine of the character clescribed which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eflicient in operation, inexpensive to manufacture and which may be controlled by anyone who is not skilled in its operation.
"With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts fully described in the following description and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompany ing drawings forming part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts through out all the figures of the drawings.
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line aa of Fig. 3, showing the sealing roller and the flap raising means swung to their inactive position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view on the line b-b of Fig. 3 showing the sealing roller and flap raising means in operative position and showing the sliding table partially moved to a position for sealing the flap to the body of the envelop.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 0-0 of Fig. 1.
Fig. i is a fragmentary side view of the machine.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary plan view of the sliding table.
Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view through the reservoir.
Referring to the drawings, 10 designates a stationary table which has secured thereto the side members 11, and the angular base members 12. The side members 11, are provided with the open slots 13, for the reception of the squared trunnions 14:, of the reservoir 15, whereby the latter is removably mounted within the side members as shown particularly in Fig. 4, of the drawings. The reservoir is provided with the curved slots 15, forthe reception of the shaft 16, of a flap raising plate li, the same having secured thereto the wick 18, which extends into the reservoir as clearly illustrated in Fig. l, of the drawings. The side members 11, are provided with the slots 19, which are adapted to receive the trunnions 20, of the roller 21, the same co-acting with a sliding table 22, to retain the body of the envelop on the latter. The sliding table 22, is mounted on the stationary table and is provided with grooves 23, on its marginal edges for the reception of the tongues formed on the side members 11. The roller 21, is normally impinged against the table 22, by gravity and the springs 25, which insure a constant pressure whereby the body of the envelop is retained on the table. The table 22, is also provided with a stop bar 26, which serves to insure an even placing of the envelop on the table and prevents the same from slipping. The table is also provided with the lifting lugs 27, which are inclined at their forward portions as ati-S, whereby upon outward movement of the table 22, they will contactwith the roller 21, and lift the same against the tension of the springs thus releasing the envelop and allowing another to be inserted therebetween. The side members of the table 10, have swingingly supported thereon a substantially U shaped yoke 29, in whichis mounted a sealing roller 30,"the same being provided with an elastic surface 31. The yoke is provided at its forward portion with a manipulating handle portion 32. The under side of the table 22, is provided with a pair of longi tudinally arranged racks 33, which are adapted to be engaged by the pinions 8ft, keyed to the shaft 35. Secured to the outer extremity of the shaft 35, is an operating handle 36.
In operation of the machine the sealing roller and the flap raising plate 17, are swung to the position shown in Fig. 1. The sliding table 22, is projected forwardly until the lifting lugs 27, have raised the roller 21, out of contact with the surface of the table. An envelop is placed on the table with the closed end abutting against the stop bar 26. The flap raising plate 17, is then swung downwardly until it contacts with the roller 21. The operator then turns the handle 36, and retracts the sliding table 22,
at the same time bringing the flap of the envelop over the flap raising plate. We will assume that the table 22, has been moved to the farthest extent of its retracted position and the flap is contacting with the wick 18. The sealing roller is now swung downwardly until it contacts with the flap of the-envelop thus pressing the same againstthe wick. The operator now turns the handle 36, in the opposite direction and it will be readily understood that the sealing roller will press the full length of the flap against the wick and it leaves the same, press the flap against the body of the envelop thus sealing the flap to the body.
While I have shown and described asimple and preferred form of the invention, I desire to reserve the right to make such alterations and changes that fall within the scopeof the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is:
1. In a machine for sealing envelops, a structure comprising a stationary table, a sliding table adapted to be moved thereover, means for raising the flap of an envelop, means for moistening the flap, means for retaining the body of the envelop on the sliding table, means for releasing the body of the envelop and a sealing roller swing ingly supported by the stationary table and co-actingv with the moistening means and the sliding table to seal the envelop upon the forward movement of the sliding table.
In a machine for sealing envelope, a structure comprising a stationary table, a sliding table adapt-ed to bemovedthereover, means hinged to the stationary table for raising the flap of an envelop whenthe sliding table is moved in a rearward direction, means for moistening the flap of the en velop, a roller co-acting with the sliding table to retain the body or the envelop in contact with the latter, means on the movable table for raising the roller when the table is moved to the forward extremity of its movement in order to release the body of Copies or this patent may be obtained tor five the envelop and a sealing roller swingingly supported by the stationary table and co-acting with the moistening means and the sliding table to moisten the flap and seal the same to the body of the envelop.
In a machine for sealing envelops, a stationary table, a sliding table adapted to move thereover, a water reservoir, hinged means for raising the flap of an envelop when the sliding table is moved in one di rection, a moistening element attached thereto and extending into the reservoir, a roller co-acting with the sliding table to retain the body of the envelop on the latter, said roller acting also to support the flap raising means when it is swung to its lowermost position and a sealing roller swing ingly supported by the stationary table and co-acting with the flap raising means and moistening element to moisten the flap and seal the same to the body of the envelop when the sliding table is moved in the opposite direction.
In a machine for sealing envelope, a stationary table, a sliding table adapted to he moved thereover, a water reservoir, hinged means for raising the flap of an envelop when the sliding table is moved in one direction, a moistening element attached thereto and extending into the reservoir, a roller .co-acting with the sliding table to retain the body of the envelop on the latter, said roller acting also to support the flap raising means most position, a sealing roller swingingly supported by the stationary table and coacting with the moistening element-and the sliding table to moisten the flap of the en velop and seal the same to the body portion when the sliding table is moved in the oppositedirection vand means on the sliding table for raising the roller. to release the sealed envelop and admit of the insertion of another therehetween.
