FEED :aoLLER.
ilAtilfiAdd.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JAMES T. FAY and LAWRENCE B. Gnasnnnenn, citizens of the United States, residing at the city of Richmond, in the State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed Rollers, of which the following is specification.
This invention relates to paper feeding machines or paper feeding devices; and it consists of a roller for engaging with the sheets of paper one after another and feeding them, said roller being pressed into frictional and positive engagement with each sheet of paper, and being constructed as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of a paper feeding device provided with a roller according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section through the roller, taken on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the roller, taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 2.
The paper feeding machine is of any approved construction, and it has a reciprocat ing frame which is provided with a horizontally projecting pin 5. An arm 6 is pivoted on this pin 5, and has a forked end portion 7. A pin 8 is journaled in the forked end portion 7, and has a feed roller 9 secured on its middle portion. The feed roller 9 is pressed upon. the sheet of paper 10 to be fed, by gravity or by any suitable mechanical means, such as a spring.
The india rubber feed rollers ordinarily used in paper feeding machines work satisfactorily on ordinary paper which has a comparatively rough surface, but they slip when used on glazed paper, and on ordinary paper the roller often becomes coated and glazed after being in use for some time and fails to work properly.
The roller 9 is provided with two cylindrical spools 12, which each have a circumferential flange 14 on one end. A disk 15 havingfine serrations or sharp teeth 16 at its periphery is mounted on the middle part of the pin 8, and the spools are arranged one on each side of it with their flanges on their outer ends. A dowel pin 17 is provided for securing the disk to one of the Specification of Letters Patent. paptg t d Mn 16 1922 Application filed April 27, 1921.
Serial No. 465,038.
fill the spaces between the flanges and the serrated disk. I These bands are secured under tension, and they cover the set-screws, and they are of substantially the same diameter as the serrated disk.
When the roller is pressed on the sheet of paper the elasticity of the bands 20 permits the points of the serrations to bear on the paper, so that the sheets are fed one by one as the roller is moved horizontally in one direction. The roller is lifted a little by the machine when moved in the reverse direction to engage with another sheet of paper.
What we claim is:
1. A feed roller for a paper feeding device, comprising a revoluble pin, two spools secured on the pin, serrated disk secured between the two spools, and bands of elastic material encircling the said spools and formed of substantially the same diameter as the said disk.
2. A. feed roller for a paper feeding device. comprising a pin, a serrated disk, spools arranged one on each side of the said disk, and bands of elastic material of substantially the same diameter as the serrated disk, said bands and disk being supported by the said spools and pin.
3. A feed roller for a paper feeding device, comprising a revoluble pin, two spools secured on the pin, a serrated disk secured between the two spools and provided with circumferential flanges at their outer ends, and bands of elastic material secured under tension around the spools between their flanges and disk, said bands being of substanti ally the same diameter as the serrated disk and permitting the points of the disk to engage the paper when the roller is pressed on it.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures.
JAMES T. FAY. LAVVRENOE B. GRASBERGER.
